ENJOY SEA, SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING IN SLIEMA
Once a quiet village, Sliema has fast developed into one of Malta’s most thriving coastal destinations. From swimming to shopping, Sliema has it all. Popular with joggers, but equally suited to a leisurely evening stroll, the coastal promenade spans the entire seafront. Restaurants, cafés and bars abound making for idyllic summers by the sea.
Surfside Lido is a particularly popular choice. Located on Sliema beach itself, it’s the perfect place to relax after a day of swimming. Those seeking more adventure can even learn to dive, Parasail or Jet Ski along the beautiful rocky coastline. The Point is Malta’s largest shopping mall and boasts remarkable views of the Valletta skyline. Enjoy the panorama from the sea by catching the Sliema- Valletta ferry which crosses the harbour to the Capital. Back on land, look out for the red Hop On Hop Off busses which provide guided tours across Malta. Finally, at the end of a busy day, Independence Garden provides a tranquil place to unwind by the sea. With its many hotels and facilities, Sliema is an excellent base for your holiday in Malta and bus routes 15, 21 and 202 service the town regularly.

XLENDI, THE LITTLE BAY WITH A LOT TO OFFER
Towers, tombs and caves with a sandy beach to top it off. This small village at the bottom of a luscious valley has a quiet charm. Xlendi’s sandy beach is popular with families due to its shallow waters. Once a Roman port, the bay is the location of many shipwrecks. A rocky outcrop provides perfect conditions for snorkelers, divers or those looking to catch some rays of sunshine. Friendly restaurants and vendors service the bay, maintaining a tranquil ambiance.
Tumblr media
Named after the founder of the Augustinian Sisters in Gozo, the cave was once used by the sisters as a swimming location. The surrounding area promises more to explore. From the Punic-Byzantine tombs at St Simon’s Point to Grandmaster Lascaris’ watchtower, those who venture a little further will be rewarded. Excavated into the cliffs, Xlendi Emergency Flour Mill was commissioned by the British Colonial Office as an emergency provision during the Cold War. Xlendi has something for everyone and is serviced by bus route 306 from Victoria.

DISCOVER ROMAN LIFE AT DOMVS ROMANA
The Domvs Romana museum in Rabat surrounds the remains of a Roman aristocratic household. Dating back to the 1st century BC, the original site boasted a colonnaded peristyle inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and contained Mosaics in the Hellenistic style depicting scenes from mythology. During the 11th century, the Fatimid Caliphate repurposed the area as a Muslim cemetery. Today the museum, which was founded in 1882 shortly after archaeologists discovered the site, displays the remains of mosaics and statues as well as artefacts collected from across Malta.

TRANQUIL VIEWS FROM HASTINGS GARDENS
Hastings Gardens are a public garden on the west side of City Gate, the main entrance to Valletta.
Located above St John’s Bastion and St Micheal’s Bastion, the gardens enjoy spectacular views of Sliema, Manoel Island, Msida and Marsamxett Harbour. A monument in honour of the second Governor of Malta, Francis, the Marquess of Hastings, is situated within the gardens. After Lord Hastings died at sea in 1827, his remains were buried in the garden, which are also named after him.
Maltese legend says that the gardens were built in only four hours. Hastings Gardens are an attractive city park in Valletta, that have recently undergone improvements and revitalisation.
The panoramic view from the gardens make them an ideal place to watch the sunset, as well as a peaceful spot where visitors can enjoy moments of tranquility throughout the day. From the Valletta bus terminus, Hastings Gardens can be reached by going up the stairs on the first left as you enter the City Gate. During the summer, the gardens host the annual Marsovin Wine festival, a lively wine tasting and live music event. Photography By Beata

You truly can’t get more authentic than this. Due to the market’s popularity, it is serviced by regular buses from Valletta. On Sundays route 85 runs every twenty minutes from the main terminus.
Those less fond of fish are not neglected. Surrounding stalls abound with Maltese produce of all kinds. From local honey and preserves to fresh vegetables, pastries and sweets, the market is a banquet of all things delicious. For the perfect souvenir, why not purchase some traditional Maltese lace?

AN OLD TOWN AND NEW CENTRE FORM GOZO’S CAPITAL CITY VICTORIA
Begin exploring Gozo with a visit to Victoria, the islands’ charming capital city. The town was named Victoria in 1887 in honour of the British monarch’s Golden Jubilee, however to old Gozitans it is still known as Ir-Rabat. The city comprises the Citadel, an ancient fortified city considered the crown of Gozo, the surrounding old town and as well as its modern developments.
Tumblr media
Victoria has plenty historic sites and cultural places of interest that are worth seeing while in Gozo. Pjazza Indipendenza (Independence Square), also referred to as it-Tokk, is the main square in the centre of town. The most prominent building in the square is the Banca Giuratale, the former seat of the municipal government of Gozo which today hosts the Victoria Local Council. Shops, cafes and a lively open air market selling various merchandise in the mornings are situated around Independence Square. Small narrow streets surround the splendid St George Basilica in the centre of the oldest part of town. While several museums such as the Gozo Museum of Archeology and the Gozo Nature Museum are located within the Citadel, the Villa Rundle Public Gardens are located on Republic Street in the centre of Victoria.

HIDDEN GEMS IN THE TARXIEN PARISH CHURCH
The parish church of Tarxien is a spectacular example of a traditional Maltese church at the heart of village life.
Tumblr media
The imposing exterior is matched by a richly adorned and decorated interior. Dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady, this parish church has been subject to significant alteration over the years. Though the original parish dates back to 1592, the structure that remains today was completed in 1627 on the site of three small chapels at the heart of the village. The addition of two spires in 1636 and six side chapels by 1740 concluded the Baroque style structure that still stands.
The church’s interior is decorated with artwork and ornate decorative cornicing. The high alter, designed by Antonio Nikolas is made entirely from marble and the altarpiece is an 1874 work by Pietro Gagliardi depicting the Annunciation. Away from the hectic tourist hot-spots, Tarxien is a true gem of Maltese culture and tradition. Why not plan to visit on the first Sunday of June when the village streets come alive to celebrate the feast of the Annunciation. Tarxien can be easily reached on route 88, which runs every half hour from Valletta in the direction of Gudja.Photography by Matthias
