This is my first ever fanfic as well as my first ever creative writing work. I've had loads of fun with it so far! It was inspired by a post about making your niche hobbies/jobs into the most incomprehensible AUs and I got inspired to write something from my own perspective. The past three summers I have worked across 5 different US states doing various field ornithology jobs including surveying and radiotelemetry. There will be a lot of personal anecdotes that make it into this story, like my experiences of getting lost and becoming stuck in brambles trying to do your job. I'm not nearly as bad at camping as Okarun though, for the record.

Okarun in full wolf yokai mode from chaotic_quibit's AU fanfic series Gaze Into The Abyss. This AU has had a vice grip on my brain since I read it and it inspired me to break my six month long art block to draw my rendition of wolf spirit Yokarun. He's not quite this wolfy in the series itself, but I couldn't help myself from making him a bit more werewolf.

For my resolution this New Year I promised myself that I would start being more authentic about my niche fandom interests and stop being afraid of being "cringe." For a long time, I've been cagey about my interests even here on Tumblr, and I think it was a result of spending my teen years on this website during the Superwholock era, immediately followed by a rejection of authenticity in favor of avoiding ending up on another YouTuber's Tumblr Cringe Compilation. I feel like we're all mature enough at this point to concede that we live in a post-cringe era now, and at this point in my life I feel like being inauthentic is just not worth it anymore.

I'm finally letting myself be that excited 15 year old again who just found out that there's other people on this magical website who like the same things I do.
