A visual look at the journey I took on my most recent artistic endeavor + significant commentary.

Drafting took my attention for the first 2 days or so of my attempt. I really wanted to make sure I had a good grasp on @/piplupfluffwritingstuff2 character before I started doing any alterations . So I made a bunch of sketches. Starting off human before slowly moving on to more mer like concepts. Then once I had an idea of what Mer Aurelis would look like, I started drawing thumbnails for potential final submission's.

After picking one i finally decided it was time to get started on...

Attempt #1! Shown above and Attempt #2 (Image unavailable). Both sketched in pencil and were meant to be finished in ink.

Now, obviously both of these attempts were scrapped. I have multiple reasons why I didn’t like Attempt #1 with the big ones being I didn’t feel like it showed off the character’s design in a way I was satisfied with and a persistent feeling that I could do better. So I tried again….

Attempt #2 was so bad it made me change mediums. I was not happy with it in anyway, so much so that I cannibalized the drawing and used it as the back side for a bunch of Mini-drawings done in color pencils.

Things were not going great but I persisted.

Deciding to try anew (but with acrylics this time) I began on...

Attempt #3… as you can probably tell that does not look like Aurelis. I rolled with it and semi-finished the painting anyway but like, this was definitely a failure.

Deciding to take a step back. I made the decision to make another ref for Aurelis. To better homogenize things…

Behold, Aurelis’s Mermaid Design Full Body, Colored Ref Sheet. (Incomplete. Front Facing Only. A proper turn around would have taken too long unfortunately.)

A drawing that would become the base for my next attempt…

Attempt #4, a mix of ink pens and colored pencils. This was almost the one I turned in but the persistent feeling of “I can do better remained” so I sat on this one for a bit.

After some thinking I realized I didn’t like how the eyes looked, hated the background, wasn’t employing the full capabilities of ink or colored pencil by mashing them this way, and in general wasn’t vibing with it.

So I gave it another go, changing mediums once more came..

Attempt #5...

So, I deleted Attempt #5. All that needs to be known about it was that it was a purely digital drawing and that I grew frustrated with very quickly leading to it's unfortunate demise.

At this point I was felling thoroughly disheartened. I had been working consecutively on this project for about 7 days at that point with little success and the burnout was really starting to kick in (to my despair) . So I decided to take a break...

For like.... less than a day.

Because in the late evening of Day 8 I started on...

Attempt #6. I worked on it mostly throughout days 9-10 at a leisurely pace. All in all I’m actually really happy with this attempt. My only real problem with it is that it felt too casual.

Attempt #6 was drawn on a piece of scrap paper and was more intended as a quick sketch to see if I could still nail Aurelis' vibe after all the failed attempts. Making it more a glorified sketch on par with the drafts then a genuine attempt and for that reason I just couldn't let this be it.

So in the late evening of day 10, I picked up my tablet, and using one of the discarded failed scans of Attempt #4’s line art, I started on Attempt #7.

Which became my ultimate submission to @/writeblr-art-trade Mermay Edition. Which can be viewed here:

Some Notes On Attempt #7:

Finished it in the late morning of May 13th, 2025.

Took me 30 hours to complete among the spread of 3 days. With the Journey it took to get there taking about 13.

It's my 100th drawing on Ibis Paint X!!! (My Preferred Drawing Program).

My 5 year old sister saw the drawing and felt inspired to make her own based off of it.

Firefly art references

Firefly is one of my hero OCs that I use occasionally. She is a fire-powered super who is quick on her feet, but often bites off more than she can chew. She can be quite sassy, but with a heart of gold.

Wanting both the hero's life as well as taking over her parents' flower shop, she often overwork herself in the hope of not having to choose one over the other.

Note: Almost all the art I got is from her old design with a cape.

Aurelis

This is my very favorite, special OC, Aurelis Surrett. In her canon universe, she is a superhero with ice powers. There are a lot of AUs though where she's been a cursed mermaid, a time traveler, and a spider hero- all with ice powers on top of course!

Yuki Lapine Whiteberry

Age: 126 earth years (She/Her/They)

Often referred to as “the lightfoot thief” or just “That Rabbit!”. Yuki’s reputation has over the past 50 years grown far and wide across the galaxies. But only a few people truly know them for who they are. 

Living their life aboard the spaceship Vulcan as a rogue space explorer. Yuki spends most of her time traveling from one planet to another looking for nothing in particular. Tho, she does have a tendency to stir up trouble, wherever she goes. 

She is a space traveling troublemaker, not quite Hero and not quite Villain. Her crimes varies from stealing items from space pirates, to chasing down a corrupt politician just to throw an egg in their face, to destroying all attempts at building a 500-billion-dollar resort on some untouched planet, just because someone else wanted to study the planet there in peace

She has a long time nemesis in Archer, a bounty hunter that makes most of his living hunting and capturing her. Luckily for Yuki however, is that she is a master escape artist, and so far there has never been a prison that she has been able to escaped from.

Lucien

Lucien Renwick is a vampire that has been around for centuries. He has dark hair, one red eye and one golden eye, and great bat wings sprouting from his back. He lives in a secluded manor near a village. He has servants that do his bidding, and while he does feed on his servants and the villagers nearby, he finds that their blood does not quite satisfy him. Lucien can seem sadistic, but somehow seductive. He has the power to hypnotize his prey and while sunlight will not kill him, it is a very unpleasant experience to be caught in it.

Kim [Void]

25 (They/them)

Kim is an OC shared between me and my co-writers of the sidekick club.

Working as one of the top henchmen of the supervillain Vulcan under the alias Void, Kim is a silent figure.

While at home their more laid back personality, and obsession for baking and gardening; would confuse most people, as how they ended up working as a criminal for the most powerful villain in the city.

But only a few people can see the hurt and fear past their calm demeanor.

Frederick

Frederick Highcrest is the crown prince (and only prince) of Ridire, a small kingdom known for its knighthood and deep blue sapphires.

His parents, King Hrethric and Queen Morgana, are the kingdom's beloved rulers who rule with love and justice.

However, not everyone is happy about it.

Lord Theodore Torsten wants control of Ridire, going as far as to incite a civil war, leading Frederick to flee into hiding, not knowing if his parents even survived the coup.

Frederick takes on the identity of the mysterious Black Knight, a legendary figure of old.

Frederick loves sword play and is also a skilled apothecary in his spare time. He suffers from immense internal conflict- guilt for not being able to help his kingdom get out from under Torsten's thumb.

Mermaids Art Trade🧜‍♀️

Welcome back to another Writeblr’s Art Trade! 

Now that it’s finally summer, why not embrace the warm weather for this art trade. In the spirit of MerMay, this month we are going full seaside fun with a mermaid themed Art trade.

Whether it is a close encounter with a sea monster, or them becoming a creatures of the sea. We hope you all join and have fun drawing each other's OCs. 

🧜‍♀️The Event and how to join🧜‍♀️

Writeblr’s Art Trade is a community art trade where you send in your OC, and receive another person's OC in return to make an artwork of. 

For this event you are allowed to send in up to five OC for the person to choose from. (you only draw one of them)

You’ll then draw and post the artwork here on Tumblr, tagging both the original creator as well as us. You could also tag the art with #writeblr-art-trade and #Mermay2025

To join please fill out our Google Form with the following things before May 1st.

Rules:

● Cannot contain hate speech, racism, religion etc. ● No sexually explicit art. (Spicy is allowed, but no smut) ● No depiction of graphic violence/whump. (light whump may be allowed if the OC owner is ok with it) ● The person may have added their own list of TW/Squicks please be respectful and follow them. ● No Ai generated images.

If you do drop out or are unable to complete the art trade, you will not be able to rejoin for one year.

Should something come up before the post date, please contact us immediately and we will either give you an extension or pass your trade over to someone else.

Everyone will receive the OC on May 1th. You can begin uploading your art trade on the 15th. All artworks have to be posted on Tumblr by the 22nd. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
