This is now COMPLETE! Aaah I'm so happy and also mentally ready for PS-2 now as it comes out in April. In case they don't treat my Poonguzhali well, I have this to fall back on. 😁
My only quibble with Kalki’s masterpiece was that I longed for a happy ending for Arulmozhi Varman and Poonguzhali. This is a story for those like me, that rewrites certain events from Book Three, Chapter 42, onwards to explore what Arulmozhi Varman’s attraction to Poonguzhali and the latter’s devotion to the Prince could have led to.... Poonguzhali X Arulmozhi
I think Kalki didn't know how much of a good thing he was creating with Poonguzhali's character and when he kicked off the Samudra Kumari x Ponniyin Selvan romance (specially in book 2!); and my grouse with the books is that they could easily have ended up together but they didn't (for historical accuracy).
So I've written out an alternate ending on ao3 for this couple I love (also featuring our favs Vandiyadevan and Sendhan Amudhan).

Dr Shashank & Dr Juhi - An introspection of Juhi's initial feelings and impressions of the man
Tumblr media
He was so handsome. So extraordinarily like the heroes in novels she didn't get much time to read with her medical degree but had still managed to indulge in once in a while... Especially now with Simran lending hers too. He was such a stereotypical goodlooking hero type. Tall and dark and handsome and brilliant... And often short and strict with them at the start, but quickly turning into the splendid mentor they all wanted to impress. Kind and good and brave and caring. A 100/10, borrowing Simran's language.
It was so hard not to lose her head over him. What was there not to? He didn't affect Simran as much, she was more used to him as he was her father's colleague. But Juhi saw him for what he was. Magnificent. A crush on him was the most natural thing in the world... And if it wasn't for Rahul and his shenanigans that kept her busy and showed her what an actual accessible and age appropriate romantic relationship is, she would have definitely lost her head, confusing awe and admiration for real ardour. It was anyway only a case of calf love, nothing to have come off of it of course... With the insurmountable differences of age, maturity and capability, let alone his relationship with Dr Smriti.
So instead... The crush transformed with time. Every moment she continued to find new reasons to like, admire and respect him. At a distance, she could have remained harmlessly infatuated, but with knowledge and familiarity, it became ... worship. He was her teacher, her God.
Tumblr media
15 years later, it both amuses and mildly unnerves Juhi that her first initial and uninformed assessment of him still remains accurate. Darn it, the man was still so handsome. Even on a freaking hospital bed! With gray hair! (AND brilliant, AND kind. AND brave. Ugh! 100/10 forever.) How did his interns not walk about with his photo in their purses... Or did kids these days not do that any more? Maybe it helped that his daughter was their peer. That must be it.
Thankfully, Juhi thinks to herself, she's no longer the impressionable young girl who first landed at Sanjivani. So, - beyond her professional assessment of the (zero) changes the years have wrought - Dr Shashank could leave no impact on her.

Dr Shashank x Dr Juhi - Part 2
Maybe now Juhi begins to wonder how he loves her. What if it's all platonic on his side? But these butterflies in his presence and the sheer awareness of his physicality. Is it only in her head? Who can she talk to, confide in? Anjali has begun to thaw to her but yeah no way she's going to be able to talk through her physical attraction to Anjali's DAD. Fat chance.
Meanwhile, if they are out at dinner or a movie or just stopping by stores in a mall to pick things up, they're just routinely assumed to be a married couple. They spend most of their free days also together now.
Sure, they're workaholics, but they each - privately and then together - realize that some of the nature of their passion at work was driven by each other. The opportunity to be each other's work spouse all those years ago, to bring forward the best outcome every time... There was a precious high there. And it could only be gotten at work then! At first they were both single but hadn't found the balance with each other properly. Then he was married, then she was. Then he was widowed...but she had Rahul. And it wasn't right to revolve around the other if unrelated to work and hospital (they never even consciously considered it!). Later, after Juhi left Sanjivani, they both used work as a solace for loneliness. But now, they had each other. Truly had each other in a way they didn't before -- workaholics they needn't be anymore, couldn't be anymore. Not when there was happiness to also be had in a coffee outside, in trying to bake together, attend a furniture sale, go to a park, pick up presents for a baby shower (even though Anjali had insisted that it's just cheaper to buy online).
Anjali has finally thawed enough to have Juhi over at their home during weekends. The three of them can hang out; she and Juhi pick out movies on Netflix and Prime (and Hotstar, ahem) to watch. Anjali always has the last say in what they order in. None of them are great shakes at cooking but Shashank can do ok provided he is given enough time. Cooking is just like surgery he says, and one of his girls rolls her eyes, the other lights up and laughs. Sometimes they serve as his sous chefs and spend the night in, food, wine and a movie.
Anjali cannot help but be curious as to why Shashank and Juhi aren't physically demonstrative. At first she thinks it's because they're respecting her feelings and she's relieved, whew. But ... she's smart, observant. She can pick up the tension too. How Juhi lingers around Dad, as if inhaling in his essence without his knowledge. How Dad manages to walk around Juhi in the kitchen without really touching her. And she thinks, gosh, idiots (I agree).
So she gives them more space. She encourages Juhi to be over at their place more when she's not around. She innocently suggests to Dad and Juhi separately why some evenings aren't spent at Juhi's. And in a combination of wisdom and frustration, Juhi realized she's gotta make the first move with Shashank.
It's ... "Shashank" now. The first time it happened was when she had met some of his friends at the hospital. They joined forces to tease him about something and in the moment, she dropped her guard and called him, "Shashank". Of course he picked it up, glanced at her to indicate he had and she blushes at the slip of tongue. Later he said, "Acha lagta hai," when they were cleaning dishes together at her place at night.
"Kya sir?"
"You know, jab tum mujhe naam se pukar te ho" Hadn't he dispensed with Dr Singh, Dr Juhi, eons ago in their relationship?
"Acha? Aur kya acha lagta hai aapko..."
He didn't rise to that bait, wouldn't any other lover have rhapsodized?
Instead, "so what do I have to do to hear it again?"
She laughs and splashes water onto him. He grabs her arm. The smiles are slipping off their faces, their gazes are fixed and it's a... moment. "Sha... Shashank," she whispers.
Yeah, well no, she thinks later to herself, satisfied. It's not all platonic.

Dr Shashank x Dr Juhi - Sanjivani (Part 1)
Here's my head canon on what actually happens with Dr Shashank's and Dr Juhi's lives in Sanjivani/Sanjeevani.
First, imma gonna totally disregard the Shashank and Sid storyline. If you must - it's a Hindi soap - Shashank had a nice identical twin brother he never spoke of who is Sid's dad. On that note, it's also the twin brother who died, so there, two problematic plot lines out of the way.
Now Dr Juhi and Dr Shashank. Here's the thing, and other bloggers have noted it too, what IS their deal? So he's in love with her. She clearly has a revived crush. She even takes him on a date and says some "humsafar" stuff.... But girl, what humsafar? Like a friend or a husband or what? She still calls him sir for Pete's sake.
Shashank has the patience of a saint. He's not gonna push her to word it out or label. Now how do these two actually reach the place they're meant to?
I think they continue in this no man's land for a bit. But people around them are slowly starting to notice... You know those "rumours" that Rahul mentioned from 10/15 years ago, that's gonna pick up again because of the rhyme they have with each other. Completing each other's thoughts, weaving music together in surgery, spending their free time at the hospital together, having these in jokes and those half glances. C'mon, their juniors - in their own world that they are, granted! - are gonna take notice. "why aren't sir and ma'am together?" someone's gonna whisper.
But when does our head in sand Juhi take notice? Maybe she falls sick, and it's Shashank who's around her, caring for her. Her private doctor. Maybe they have to be apart for a few days for some conference - they usually go together but this time it didn't work out - and she realizes how MUCH she misses him, it actually hurts. He misses her too but isn't surprised by it. Although amused by her numerous calls (and heck, video calls!) to check in.
And what of their sexual tension. It's present. An underlying theme to their interactions. She's probably in her late 30s/early 40s? He's likely early 50s? I assume it's a 10-12 years age difference between them. Not that age matters for chemistry but just pointing out that everything Shashank said about "iss umar mein" as if one leg was stuck in the grave is rubbish. So yeah, there's this underlying tension between them all the freaking time. But he doesn't touch her ever. The gentleman that he is.
Hmm I'm gonna have to think further to figure out where my couple goes... Love you all for creating and holding this space for me.

I binged Sanjivani S2 last night on hotstar. Basically just the Dr Shashank and Dr Juhu scenes cuz the nostalgia gosh,.... From those flashback scenes to that BEAUTIFUL theme track! Aaaaaaaaaa.
I was nine when I saw them last on screen together and man I remember asking my best friend then after catching the promo on TV if the 'hum aapke hai kaun' handsome man marries the pretty girl in salwar ... And she went "eek, no! He's her boss! There are cuter younger guys for her" ... So this rebooted Sanjivani is basically a shout out and hug to my baby self who immediately saw why Dr. Shashank and Dr. Juhi made sense from a promo!
So anyway, I just watched their scenes, then rewatched their whole track again... In the MIDDLE of a work day (staying up till 3am finally to also finish work) so it's obvious how invested I was.
Loved it (minus the death, what death?!) and shout-out to ALL THE FANS out there that made this ship work. I - and my nine year old self - are grateful.
