Inspired by the architecture of human bone's tough outer layer, engineers at Princeton have developed a cement-based material that is 5.6 times more damage-resistant than standard counterparts. The bio-inspired design allows the material to resist cracking and avoid sudden failure, unlike conventional, brittle cement-based counterparts. In a Sept. 10, article in the journal Advanced Materials, the research team led by Reza Moini, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Shashank Gupta, a third-year Ph.D. candidate, demonstrate that cement paste deployed with a tube-like architecture can significantly increase resistance to crack propagation and improve the ability to deform without sudden failure. "One of the challenges in engineering brittle construction materials is that they fail in an abrupt, catastrophic fashion," Gupta said.

Inspired by the material that makes up oyster and abalone shells, engineers at Princeton have created a new cement composite that is 17 times more crack-resistant than standard cement and 19 times more able to stretch and deform without breaking. The findings could eventually help increase the crack resistance of a wide range of brittle ceramic materials, from concrete to porcelain. "If we can engineer concrete to resist crack propagation, we can make it tougher, safer and more durable," said researcher Shashank Gupta, a graduate student in Reza Moini's lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In an article published June 10 in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, the research team led by Moini, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, reported that creating alternating layers of tabulated cement paste and thin polymer can significantly increase crack resistance and the ability to deform without completely breaking (ductility).

Dr Shashank & Dr Juhi - An introspection of Juhi's initial feelings and impressions of the man
He was so handsome. So extraordinarily like the heroes in novels she didn't get much time to read with her medical degree but had still managed to indulge in once in a while... Especially now with Simran lending hers too. He was such a stereotypical goodlooking hero type. Tall and dark and handsome and brilliant... And often short and strict with them at the start, but quickly turning into the splendid mentor they all wanted to impress. Kind and good and brave and caring. A 100/10, borrowing Simran's language.
It was so hard not to lose her head over him. What was there not to? He didn't affect Simran as much, she was more used to him as he was her father's colleague. But Juhi saw him for what he was. Magnificent. A crush on him was the most natural thing in the world... And if it wasn't for Rahul and his shenanigans that kept her busy and showed her what an actual accessible and age appropriate romantic relationship is, she would have definitely lost her head, confusing awe and admiration for real ardour. It was anyway only a case of calf love, nothing to have come off of it of course... With the insurmountable differences of age, maturity and capability, let alone his relationship with Dr Smriti.
So instead... The crush transformed with time. Every moment she continued to find new reasons to like, admire and respect him. At a distance, she could have remained harmlessly infatuated, but with knowledge and familiarity, it became ... worship. He was her teacher, her God.
15 years later, it both amuses and mildly unnerves Juhi that her first initial and uninformed assessment of him still remains accurate. Darn it, the man was still so handsome. Even on a freaking hospital bed! With gray hair! (AND brilliant, AND kind. AND brave. Ugh! 100/10 forever.) How did his interns not walk about with his photo in their purses... Or did kids these days not do that any more? Maybe it helped that his daughter was their peer. That must be it.
Thankfully, Juhi thinks to herself, she's no longer the impressionable young girl who first landed at Sanjivani. So, - beyond her professional assessment of the (zero) changes the years have wrought - Dr Shashank could leave no impact on her.

"Dad, why didn't you tell me anything earlier? Maybe...maybe I could have done something, Dad!" "All the neurosurgeons have given up." "Dad, but --!" "You know, I give that speech about choices every year - that we have choices. I think, now I only have one choice...to wait for it." "Dad, why are you saying that?! Nothing will happen to you! W-we'll figure something out, Dad! Nothing will happen to you!" "I have an idea." "O-okay...?" "We should find a better surgeon than Juhi." "Yeah, fine, tell me, who?" "Me!" "Dad!"

Anjali - Juhi - Shashank
I purposely put Juhi in the middle because well...
I was wondering why Anjali doesn’t like Juhi when I started watching and here’s my take:
The thing is, most parents love to compare their children with someone else's. They think it builds competitiveness in their child when all it does is build resentment.
With Anjali growing up, probably all she heard is Juhi this and that. “Juhi is such a gifted student” “Juhi is an excellent doctor” “Juhi is the best surgeon I've ever trained” Juhi-Juhi-Juhi- making Anjali feel that no matter what she does or how hard she works, she can never match up to The Great Dr. Juhi.
Dr. Juhi is that mountain she needs to cross to prove herself to her father. That she’s just as gifted, just as excellent, just as great. So when Anjali said Juhi has always been between us, well yes, in that context I agree.
But is it Juhi’s fault? Of course not. Do I blame Anjali for resenting her? No. However, I do wish she wouldn’t take out her anger on her.
I am disappointed with Dr. Shashank tho. He needs to really listen to Anjali.
I’m waiting to see how this equation develops. I’m hoping Dr. Juhi doesn’t interfere and try to solve the father-daughter relationship because it’ll just make it worse.
#Sanjivani#Dr. Anjali Gupta#Dr. Juhi Singh#Dr. Shashank Gupta#such a grey area tho#could be any other possibilities#or I'm just over analyzing and she just hates her for plot convenience#which could be The Worst#I'm gonna keep putting Juhi in the middle#because I can#sn analysis#Sanjivani 2#tv: india
