Unfriended: Silicon Valley's "anti christ" hosts our next Pub Summit
Tumblr media
The "anti christ of Silicon Valley": that's how author and broadcaster Andrew Keen describes himself. In his latest book, Digital Vertigo, Keen asks if Mark Zuckerberg really knows what the word "friend" means. Why are we all becoming so addicted to Twitter? Should everyone really be broadcasting the most intimate details of their lives on Facebook, Foursquare and Instagram?
Keen presents today’s social media revolution as the most wrenching cultural transformation since The Industrial Revolution. The more electronically connected we become, he says, the lonelier and less powerful we seem to be.
Feeling especially lonely on Google+ this week, we felt we had to invite Andrew to a Pub Summit for some good-old-fashioned offline social networking with Dublin's buzzing tech scene. We'd love you to come along and join Andrew and our team.
The event is in Dakota on South William St, Dublin 2, at 18:00 on Thursday, June 21st. The event is free, but you will need to apply for a ticket in order to attend.
Notwithstanding Andrew's suspicions about technology's effect on people's relationships, we're asking you to tap into your network of colleagues, peers and friends to create the most engaged group of Dublin's tech, startup and online community. In order to secure your ticket, you'll be asked to invite three like-minded people to the event by email. Alternatively, if you don't fancy that, all we ask is that you Tweet about the event. In return we'll whisk your ticket to you!
If you have attended one of our Pub Summits before, take a look at some photos from our Dublin event in April, or our Pub Summit in Berlin last month.
We'd love to see you there.
Get your tickets here.

Web Summit European Tech Crawl
Tumblr media
This summer the Web Summit is going on tour! Beginning on June 18th in London we will travel around Europe hosting a series of informal, complimentary, networking events for the startup and tech communities across 14 cities. The Web Summit European Tech Crawl will provide a unique opportunity for young startups, developers, entrepreneurs, investors and media to get together and share ideas and expertise. The goal is to ditch the office in favor of a pint in the sun with a diverse selection of peers.
You can apply for an invite below:
<a href="https://dublin2010.wufoo.com/forms/p7w5p9/" data-mce-href="https://dublin2010.wufoo.com/forms/p7w5p9/">Fill out my Wufoo form!</a>
More Information:
Every evening we'll be co-hosting drinks in a different city. That venue we hope will be a pub, we're Irish after all, and it's important to play to national stereotypes when abroad. In every city, we'll be inviting about 100 interesting tech folk to join us for a drink each night. We're also hoping to visit the offices of great startups, incubators, and co-working spaces, using your WiFi as we please. No seriously, have you seen how much roaming costs?
The Web Summit European Tech Crawl will be held in association with our media partners TechCrunch and The Next Web, and our respective city co-hosts - a group of incredible tech influentials.
Below are the 14 cities we're thinking of so far, and a list of our co-hosts. If you'd like to help, co-host, sponsor, or have any ideas please drop me an email, [email protected].

The Types of Emails not to Send Us Part II
Tumblr media
After sharing the most hilarious email we've ever received from a startup yesterday, we received a response late last night from the guy: once again it's pure gold.
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sean F <sean*********@*********.com> Date: Mon, Apr 23, 2012 at 9:01 PM Subject: interesting To: [email protected] Paul, Think you're clever by publicly posting my emails to you?  In fact, you just created a rather awesome digital history which will further illustrate your incompetence when it comes to recognising a lucrative opportunity!  I wonder will you feel a bit like the drummer who quit the Beatles before they hit the bigtime?  Perhaps my in-your-face frankness is just too much for you?  Money is like rocket fuel my friend and my startup is a rocket-ship to the planet where Billionaires live the good-life and people like you shall never visit.  Those with real VC savvy will buy as much rocket fuel as I need because they understand what it takes to unseat paper companies like Facebook and Google.  Haha!  In six months you will feel like a FOOL!  No joke... A FOOL!  So, have a good laugh now and I'll pray for you later. respectfully, Sean F

The Types of Emails not to Send Us
The collective Web Summit team get emails all the time from all sorts of folk - this one is pure gold:
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Seanie <seanie********@******.com> Date: Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 8:17 PM Subject: startup to bring to the attention of 300 investors To: [email protected]
Dear Paul, First of all, I would like to thank you for providing the opportunity to startups like mine to present our product to 300 investors. Secondly, and I hope this doesn't sound arrogant... You are going to benefit greatly from being associated in any way with my startup.  You see, there is a lot of talk these days about Instagram exiting for a billion, but our product is so brilliantly innovative and will certainly become as ubiquitous (maybe more so) than Facebook within 6 months, that I will probably exit for 10 billion before Christmas.  This is not an exaggeration.  I'm tired of people with their silly apps running around like the next Zuckerberg when true innovators like myself stand to not only make a boatload of money, but probably pull Ireland out of recession within 6 months.   What is my product is probably your next question.  Well, I'm happy to take this partnership to the next level if you are ready. I would need an NDA signed and executed by every person who works for your company and accommodations at a five-star hotel in Dublin as I would have to travel from Cork.  Honestly, it would be the biggest mistake of your life not to act on this quickly.  Then again, maybe you don't care about making billions. I look forward to hearing back from you! Regards, Seanie F*****k
Part Two
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Seanie  <> Date: Thu, Apr 19, 2012 at 3:14 PM Subject: my email To: [email protected]
Paul, I emailed you yesterday. Tick tock. Clock is ticking.
Part Three:
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Seanie  <> Date: Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 5:35 PM Subject: very sad To: [email protected]
It is with great sadness that I right to you Mr. Paul of websummit fame.  I gave you two chances over the period of a week to respond to what is surely the most lucrative offer your organisation has ever had the opportunity to be part of.  You have failed miserably and I will take enormous pleasure in your humiliation when my startup sells for billions in 6 months.   Regretfully, Seanie

And That's A Wrap
I think everyone who attended and watched online will agree, LWS 2012 was a huge success. But we never could have pulled it off without the help of a lot of people. First and foremost, we'd like to thank everyone for coming - both speakers and attendees, as you guys are what makes this event at the end of the day. A massive thanks also goes to all of our sponsors, and to the volunteers who turned up and made our lives a whole lot easier on the day.
With that in mind, the Dublin Web Summit 2012 is set for October, and tickets are being released this April. We've got big plans and it's set to be our largest event yet, so we hope if you enjoyed LWS you'll come visit us in Dublin. With every event we learn more, and we're constantly working on improving the experience of our attendees, so if you have any suggestions for our next event or speakers you'd like to see, please do let us know and we'll see what we can do.
Thanks again to everyone, and we look forward to seeing you all in Dublin in October!
