anti-Sakura/pro-Sasuke folks like to say that Sakura only cared about an idealized Sasuke and that the CoH Sasuke was his true self (and that the CoH was just a way to antagonize him in favor of Naruto, but that’s not exactly the topic of this post). most of these people defend Naruto and Karin as being people who didn’t idealize Sasuke and accepted the Sasuke who wanted revenge, and that’s some serious bullshit.

Naruto sought to understand Sasuke on a deep level, but he still didn’t recognize the hateful Sasuke as Sasuke’s true self. this remains true throughout the duration of the series, and we’re reminded of it again in 696:

Where is this ‘acceptance’ that antis rant and rave about? Naruto is ‘idealizing’ Sasuke exactly according to their definition.

People love to claim that Karin ‘understood and supported’ Sasuke’s revenge, and didn’t ‘idealize’ him, but as soon as he hits rock bottom, this is what she has to say:

again, where is this unwavering ‘acceptance’ of vengeful Sasuke?

Then there are the Sasuke fans who claim that Taka was better for Sasuke than 7, because apparently Taka uNderSt00d & sUpp0rt3d Sasuke, even though

literally none of the members really knew shit let alone cared about Sasuke’s goal. there is nothing to prove that Karin really knew about or understood Sasuke’s vengeance on any deep level. her reason for supporting him comes down to this:

so sure, she wanted him to be happy, but did she really know about what he sought, and think about whether it was best for him? no. she was just along for the ride, and, yes, ‘idealized’ the kind genin Sasuke.

Sakura did show a constant desire to understand Sasuke, and she did know a lot about him.

in 181, she asks why he never lets her, someone who cares about him, in, and shows that she specifically empathizes with the pain of loss, because it would hurt her to lose him. Sasuke fans often ridicule Sakura, and even Naruto, for talking about ‘their feelings’ while simultaneously demanding that people empathize with Sasuke…which requires comparing one’s own feelings to another’s, lmao. no, Sakura doesn’t state or even imply that her loneliness upon losing him would be the same as his from losing his family. she only states that it would make her feel lonely on a discernible level. she makes no quantitative or qualitative comparison to what he felt because of the massacre, only that she can feel and understand loneliness. he fills a certain role in her life that no one else does. not to mention that she reminds him that he’ll only be alone again if he leaves the village. for god’s sake, she was 12 when she said all of this, yet it still reaches a mature level of empathy.

in terms of her deepening her understanding of Sasuke, she learns all she can about Orochimaru and Itachi, and disdains Itachi for hurting Sasuke (and Naruto). i’d pull panels, but i can’t remember specific chapters other than that they were in early Shippuden. when she tries to resolve to kill Sasuke, it’s not even really her decision, and she ultimately fails because she does not give up on him. Sasuke screams at her and Kakashi to bring back his family, including Itachi, so she knows that he considers Itachi his beloved brother again. then Naruto arrives:

and she hears Sasuke’s feelings about Naruto’s efforts to empathize, and stands up to him. (and yet she’s a doormat?)

after Sasuke and Naruto communicate with their fists because #healthyrelationship, Sakura more or less cements her feelings about the situation for the rest of Shippuden:

she sees that Naruto, Sasuke’s best friend, someone who spent most of his life alone, can’t even get through to Sasuke at that point, so she steps back and decides that there is nothing she can really say or do. Naruto, who had more information than she did, still could not change Sasuke’s trajectory. of course she was going to behave this way again later on in 693, when Naruto and Sasuke are again arguing about logistical bullshit in front of her. 

even before that, when he first arrives on their side of the war, she immediately asks Sasuke what he’s doing:

and i’m pretty sure she asks him later on about his intentions and reasoning.

in 693, she hears everything Sasuke has to say about his reasoning, etc. etc. so there is literally no reason for her to ask any further questions. she expresses frustration about her inability to do or say anything to help him other than appeal to the kind part of him that thanked her in 181, because yeah, we was literally just going to kill everyone (insert comic of Sasuke saying “I—and hear me out on this—need to kill everyone”). people are like “ugh but like she could’ve asked about his reasoning more and offered other ideas !�� like boo fucking hoo she already heard most of what she needed to hear, he was clearly in the wrong, and he clearly wasn’t going to change his mind regardless of any other ~creative revolution ideas~ anyone had. she already agreed with Naruto, who was saying everything that needed to be said. the only thing left was for Naruto and Sasuke to fight because that’s how the series was always going to end. 

in terms of her perceived inability to do anything, she says “I can’t exchange blows with you, all I can do is sit here and cry,” and i think it’s safe to say that she meant that both physically and emotionally. back after Danzo’s death Kakashi told her that she’s seen she couldn’t handle facing Sasuke, and that remained true. she could never bring herself to kill him, and she likely wasn’t skilled enough to do it in the first place. the threeway deadlock is more or less overshadowed by the fact that Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnates of Indra and Ashura. that’s probably the only thing that makes this true. 

and of course we know that she only had selfless intentions despite the bitching of detractors:

I don’t know what the fuck happened to you guys younger than me in your formative years but literally everyyyything you’re describing is something that was included in the concept of ‘best friends’ as it was repeatedly presented to me as a child and teen.

SOmething happened along the way that got so many people thinking that ‘friend’ is ‘anyone and everyone you repeatedly  have ‘friendly’ contact with’ and that’s NOT TRUE.

We need to seriously bring back the word ‘acquaintance’. You need to familiarize yourself with it.

Because all of you complaining about having friend groups full of people who talk shit about you or exclude you? You don’t have friends, those are acquaintances.

Those ‘friends’ who don’t actually know much about you and aren’t that concerned about you? Acquaintances.

Those ‘friends’ you know who wouldn’t go one on one with you shopping, to lunch, to the movies? Acquaintances.

You are acquainted. You know each other. You are friendly towards each other. But that’s it. You’re not friends.

Somewhere along the way the term ‘friend’ became ‘anyone you know and talk to in a positive manner’ and that’s fine but in that case we ALSO need to re-legitimize the term best friend.

Because to a one, every post whining about ‘platonic mates’ and pining for ‘platonic dates’ is literally just someone wishing they had a best friend.

I really wanna scream cuz I AGREE!

Yup, got that right. I’m not here for quantity, I’m here for quality. My loyalties lie with the ship I personally deem to have the most potential.  While Kacchako’s scenes are limited, the few scenes we have received in canon are scenes with great substance. Uraraka, with the exception of Eraser Head, is the only character outside of Bakugou’s family who seems to possess an in depth understanding of the character.  Here, we have a brief moment where Uraraka provides us (and Deku) with an accurate assessment in regards to Bakugou’s emotional state. You can tell that her revelation comes as a surprise to Deku. Despite knowing Bakugou for years, their relationship is founded on miscommunication and misinterpretations. However, Uraraka, despite not sharing many scenes with Bakugou, already has a strong grasp as to who he is. So while this scene is super fleeting, it’s one that holds great meaning. It shows great understanding on Uraraka’s part and it is moment of clarity for Deku. Clarity which was provided to him by Uraraka’s careful observation. 

And then we have the sports festival arc; which is where everything began.  While Uraraka’s closest relationships on the show are Iida and Deku, when faced with the prospect of fighting one of the strongest heroes on the show, both characters, without batting an eye, assumed that defeat for Uraraka would be the inevitable outcome and that she would be in need of some serious assistance.

Of course, they’re not the only two who think Uraraka is unable to hold her own in a battle. Her fellow classmates also deem her to be incapable of holding her own in a fight. 

While this is extremely frustrating for both me and Uraraka, it’s a great juxtaposition to the way Bakugou and Eraser Head see Uraraka. 

And here we have Deku, the ever observant character, who is baffled by Eraser Head’s analysis. Because Deku didn’t think Uraraka had a chance against Bakugou. Uraraka, who constantly cheers Deku on. Who voted for him, instead of voting for herself, so that he could become class rep. Who went to talk to the teachers in hopes of convincing them to allow Deku to pass his exam. Who has complete, unwavering faith in him. Doesn’t get the same kind of faith in return.  But you know who does see her strength and determination? Bakugou. 

Bakugou never let his guard down. Not for a moment. Because he didn’t underestimate Uraraka. He didn’t treat her like she was beneath him. Because Bakugou saw her strength, her determination and her potential.  Uraraka has been watching Bakugou. She knows him well and because of this, she is able to come up with a strong course of action on her own. And this impressed Bakugou, who verbally acknowledges that it was a close call, as well as providing is with visual confirmation when his hand twitches from having to rely on such a heavy dose of power in order to counter her attack. We also see him breathe heavily after creating such a huge explosion. All things that suggest that he was right to treat her as a viable opponent. And when Uraraka gets back up, Bakugou smirks, because he’s excited to be facing her. Because she is a worthy opponent. 

Not to mention the fact that he is visibly shocked when she collapses, because he had already acknowledged her strength. It may not be much in terms of quantity, but that’s not my main priority. I like the ship, not for its abundance of scenes, but for the fact that Uraraka has a deep understanding of Bakugou and Bakugou, despite his flaws and ease in seeing others as being beneath him (like calling others extras and not bothering to learn their names) saw the fire that burned in Uraraka when no one else did and treated her, not as someone beneath him, but as an equal. So yeah, I’ll take my limited interactions over the abundance of Uraraka x Deku scenes. Because most of their scenes prop Deku up, but don’t really do much for Uraraka in terms of her development.  Her biggest moment thus far, has been her fight with Bakugou. Her other scenes - which yes, come in abundance - involve either propping up Deku or the narrative acknowledging that Uraraka has a thing for him in the worst way possible: i.e Uraraka breathes and the writer is like, ah yes, this is a good place to insert her feelings for Deku. 

When you can relate to Toga…. Like, if that isn’t a problem, idk what is.  warning, manga spoilers:  

I don’t like how much of Uraraka’s plot revolves around Deku or that when Uraraka does something bad-ass, like hold her own against Toga, it’s because there’s some dude in her life she wants to be like. Or when they’re talking about training, out of nowhere, for literally no logical reason, Uraraka’s plot turns to romance. Why diminish her scenes like that? There was 0 need to make that scene romantic, but alas, here we are. And yeah, that’s aggravating to me. I want more for her.  So there you go.

I cannot express how much I agree with THIS

some of my fave things in MHA

SO UH HEY i was suddenly inspired to write this. there are a lot of things in MHA that i think are handled really, really well or in a particularly interesting way, and i wanted a list of some of my personal favorite things

Money as Motivation

i really enjoy how Uraraka’s main motivation in the series, at least starting off, is to earn money for her family. she grew up poor, and she saw how much her parents had to struggle in order to support their family, so she decided to go into a dangerous field of work in order to get the money to help support them in return.

and what i especially love is that Iida, a kid from a wealthy family, completely supports her in this. even before he finds out that it’s for her family, he sees absolutely no problem with someone wanting to earn themselves a more comfortable life by becoming a hero and getting the money from it. 

even without the selfless motivation, just wanting to improve your own comfort is presented as just as valid a reason to earn money as is helping your family. and after Iida finds out the full story, he begins applauding Uraraka for her selfless nature in wanting to support her parents, admiring her for it.

there’s just a lot to love there. going into a dangerous business to improve your life isn’t something to be looked down upon. it’s not selfish in the least. it’s just another reason among others, and Iida is just such a sweet and supportive friend to Uraraka before and after she tells them the entire story

Pushing Yourself Too Hard

since the beginning of the series, overworking and pushing your body too hard has been often brought up. and at first it’s treated as something positive, but then it’s quickly shown that it does nothing but harm in the long run.

pushing yourself too hard can result in collapsing, having more negative effects instead of positive, if you strain too hard you’ll end up injuring yourself to the point where you may not be able to even function as you did before.

Bakugou saying how he has to bend himself into a pretzel to win is shown as an inspiring thing, due to his unwavering determination, but the fact that he’s just a child, struggling against an absolute Monster of a Man, and willing to destroy his own body to win is not something that should be taken positively. rather, it’s a desperation move of a desperate child desperately trying to win. 

Izuku is constantly told that he needs to take better care of his body. people around him are worried. Recovery girl is upset at All Might for not taking responsibility for Izuku’s actions, All Might feels guilty for pushing Izuku so hard at the Sports Festival (recognizing his failure as a teacher towards his young student), and Inko is terrified her son may be paralyzed for the rest of his life trying to reach his dream. overwork doesn’t just negatively affect you, but also those around you.

All Might praises Izuku for finally being able to get out of a battle without hurting himself. the whole series up to that point was showing the audience, over and over again, that Izuku needs to learn how to control his powers. at first, the consequences weren’t so bad, but then they just kept getting worse and worse and worse, until he was under threat of paralysis. 

the series makes a point of showing how serious this is. it’s not a joke. you can’t just shrug off your injuries. you need to be smart about it, know your limits, and understand when to stand down and rest, or when not to fight. pushing yourself constantly won’t help you in the long run. 

it’s just super refreshing to see this in a shonen series, when so many others have characters sustain many life-threatening injuries, and simply shrug them off and continue on as if nothing happened. because injuries like these can and WILL have consequences later on if not addressed. (assuming, of course, that the narrative makes a point of showing it, like MHA does)

All Might praises Izuku for finally getting out of a situation without any injury, and this is a big moment. finally, Izuku didn’t get hurt. he didn’t hurt himself. he’s safe and in tact. he was able to come up with a plan that didn’t involve fighting at all. and All Might is relieved that his surrogate son successor was able to come out of it alive and well, and hugs him for the first time in the series.

you can’t just keep pushing yourself. you have to know your limits.
