Madame Vastra in the style of my silurian design. A Silurian noblewoman (and, functionally, the last of her species) who runs a very successful for-hire detective business in 1800s London with her Human wife Jenny and Sontaran housekeeper Strax. While she is a deeply sensible and learned person who's largely adjusted to life in a human-centric world, she still occasionally falls into the arrogant and dismissive attitudes of Silurian society; the commonalities between her and the Doctor aren't exactly lost on their friends.

(also, yes, the people they work with are just as oblivious to the fact that she is a dinosaur and more scandalized by her gay marriage as they are in the show proper)

The genus Silurian ("Person of the Silures", in reference to the historical territory of Wales in which they were first found) was initially known only from a single fossil, notable in part for the unusual object fossilized alongside it (1). Though this was generally accepted to simply be a large petrified stick, the "Silurian Artifact" and the associated "Silurian Hypothesis" were often a point of discussion in the topic of dinosaur intelligence and the theory of pre-human civilizations. It wasn't until large-scale mining operations began to impede on their extensive networks of stasis chambers that the Silurians themselves finally woke up and were able to meet humankind in person. To the surprise of many (and dismay of a few) the Silurians were not the scaled, humanoid "dinosauroids" so often depicted, but colorful, feathered, and relatively goose-shaped. Most Silurians who were present in the planet's underground represent the gentry and high ranking military, who were given priority in the earth-based shelters. Most others were evacuated on large, extensive spaceships, all of which are yet to return to Earth. Due to this, the varied mindsets and cultures of the Silurians are in shambles at best, largely replaced by the speciesism and real estate concerns of the upper classes. (1) Much later, the original type fossil was identified as Rohlik, a student who fell to his death after attempting to drunkenly pole vault over a ravine with a large petrified stick.

just curious, why oviraptorids for your silurians?

oh I definitely tossed around a few different ideas before the oviraptors, they just ended up feeling the most right to me. here's something that could almost pass for a design process:

The first shot at a silurian I did was this tuatara redesign of the original fish guys; i didn't really like it as it doesn't feel very evocative of the original to me (the fact that they're going for "black lagoon fish man" does not jell with how subsequent designs are lizard people, and I just couldn't marry those two things well here) (also, wow, I hadn't even rewatched surface (2005) at this point, goes to show how much of a throttle that's had on my design sensibilities for the past 20 years)

I think the second was this (sort of) prosauropod, after a friend informed me that the species is canonically meant to be prosauropods (sure jan). This wasn't a super serious design, I drew it in like 5 minutes for my friends (I did consider prosauropods seriously later on, but never drew any concepts past this)

When I was looking through my folders I found this drawing next to the last, where its just the humanoid silurians but with feathers. pretty sure this was just meant to be exactly what you'd expect a feathered design would have been on the bbc in 2011. I don't remember drawing this, but here it is for posterity.

the next (actually somewhat serious) attempt made them weird raptors; at this point I was actively trying to give them a flat, owl-like face so they were evocative of the humanoid designs in the show. I really wanted them to feel like generic spec bio dinosaur people of the 2020s (a tongue in cheek update to them being generic spec bio dinosaur people for the 1970s) and this kind of has that vibe, but I didn't think it looks great; something about it feels very non expressive and kind of forced to me. (The kea-inspired colors stuck around though.)

later I revamped that sketch and added a cassowary-esque crest (you can see the one in the frilly clothes here is just that first design with a crest tacked on).

I also doodled an oviraptorid version in the corner while I had dinosaurs with crests in mind; I ended up really liking how much that looked almost human in profile, so I ended up fleshing that out more:

This looked way more expressive and bespoke to me, and felt the most evocative of the original humanoid designs (somehow), while still looking like a real dinosaur species instead of a totally made up one

so yeah the oviraptors ended up sticking around at that point - they just clicked way more than any of the other attempts!

I've been trying to redesign my OC Magna/Maggie to be a bit more black coded like her wife all while keeping her witchy/necromancer aesthetic,,,

Who got all the titanfall friends into Lancer? I got all my titanfall friends into Lancer B^) We have a campaign on our hands boys! I decided to go full self indulgence, so my first Lancer character will be my Voidling persona. I made her an NHP occupying a broken robotic body, filling the rest with nanomachines hacked over from her Balor.

For those who aren’t familiar, Lancer is a tabletop roleplaying game thats based on you being a mech pilot in space and its epic. The designs of the mechs are out of this world, go check it out. Also the playerbook is free to download so getting into it is easy and the systems are less complicated than DnD.

I have not drawn Atraks’ pre- Exo self in so many months. Not since last November, at the very least.

I’m finally on break and have SAI back, so I figured that I’d participate in that really cute oc ball that’s been happening lately! :> It’s a good chance to try and sharpen my skills and draw more.

Here’s Lafayette and Níðhöggr [with and without illusory human form enabled]! They are no stranger to parties in their natural setting although typically those parties end up with one to twenty people dead on government orders. Lafayette probably adorned Nid to match her dress– although dressing your world’s equivalent of a predator drone in your mother’s jewelry is not particularly advised.
