Actually!! Heather met Mac when she was 17 😭 this is common with Byrne I fear

But aurora was canonically 18 when she became a teacher- she tried to kill herself at 13, then the book makes it very clear that it was 5 years later when Wolverine recruited her for alpha flight. She's eighteen- then we're told that it's a years worth of training later, and considering that the marvel handbook that she got a masters in education at 18! The conclusion is that she was definitely a teen 😭 (the whole drinking thing in machine man wasn't written by Byrne who hadn't had much time to establish that yet- The twins were BLOND on the cover and there was no mention of her did in that issue because they were essentially a scarlet witch and quicksilver reskin

But even then it's acknowledged in alpha flight 4 (I believe? It's one of the marina issues) where it's revealed that Walter is sleeping with Aurora, unaware of her DID, and even Mac is like dude wtf, so even in story their relationship is VERY weird

And about Mac and box- they're both also awful characters to her story that I don't think justify any of Walters behaviour 😭😭 ofc it was a comic of the time dealing with mental health but her misery was really established and there was quite the sympathetic light to aurora's story. I have my gripes with Mac anyway but Box especially, being another older man (once again has a kid) lusting for this mentally ill girl that the team KNOWS is unstable and very much manic

Obviously there's things further on in her publication history (Walter sending her to an abusive psych ward twice comes to mind) but overall there's a consensus in modern comics that the pair AREN'T compatible and Aurora and especially Jeanne-Marie is uncomfortable around Walter (see the captain marvel run she was in alpha flight space edition as well as alpha flight vol 4)

,Her publication history is, of course, full of ableism and misogyny but there has been a stark effort in how characters treatment of her change- especially in the example of Northstar. Even in the Byrne run there was development in the sense that Jean-Paul became less and less controlling and misogynistic and ableist, and that came with him becoming a more fleshed out character. By the end of the series they're close, and their conflict has died down a significant amount. It's brought back by other writers, but they're considered to be supportive of each other and siblings who love each other in modern day narrative, even though they have a rocky history

But Rora has been quite detached from characters like Walter and Mac, Mac hasn't really interacted with her properly in YEARS and Walter isn't considered a viable love interest anymore, and I think that's because there's a lack of development and acknowledgement of their history in the way there is Northstar

But like you said, it's going to be exaggerated because that's the nature of comics! It's difficult not to read in-between the lines of the books, and although that ableism and misogyny that's so deeply rooted in them is evident from a writers perspective, it's also got to be acknowledged from the books perspective. In the real world, this relationship was one written by Byrne with very little interest in making it abusive or toxic, this is his ideal of a relationship (also there's a bit of evidence supporting that he was living vicariously through Walter 😭😭) Byrne was a creep and this is how he wrote relationships between older men and younger women. But in the continuity, it's difficult to be able to ignore the flaws in that relationship and how much we'd want to move on- so people tend to write them based off the implications of the past, and also worked to really separate the pair more and more- whenever theyre in comics that is.

Sorry if this makes no sense, I am currently exhausted ❤️💪but this is my read!!

I'm honestly really hoping Sasquatch does something completely awful to Aurora during my read-through, because not gonna lie guys, I'm about 65? 64? Issues into Vol 1, and I've read every other volume of Alpha Flight, and so far the worst thing that's happened is when Langkowski nonconsensually masked Aurora's X Gene when she asked to be genetically altered to be less dependent on Northstar, which I'm not denying is a dick move, but this is also the universe with giant genocidal murder robots so you'll have to excuse me if that also isn't the worst thing that's ever happened to me in a comic. Like with Reed Richards, that doesn't really... matter to me? Maybe I just have a very high tolerance for messed up comic moments, but in the grand scheme of fucked up comic relationship moments, that would barely rank top 20 for me. Probably would barely scrape 50. Like... these are comics, and also so far it's never come up once that that happened in any of the subsequent series', as if everyone kind of forgot, so I don't get it.

I don't think this relationship is at all healthy, or should be long term, or benefits either character–but unless Sasquatch does something truly indefensible in the next issues I have to read up until 130, it does seem like a lot of people REALLY exaggerate Langkowski's actions to be the Worst Ever. Again, I'm aware I possibly have a very high tolerance for fucked up interpersonal comic relationships–I've read Peter David X Factor in full–but this just seems like regular comic drama for me! I dunno! I don't get it!

and then when david does come back from the dead (again), they break up, so tommy still loses him.
