I gotta holler real quick about someone. Y’all.
VERONICA CARTWRIGHT.
I rewatched “Patient X” and “Two Fathers/One Son” tonight and I just have to say, Veronica Cartwright knocked it out of the fucking park. Holy lord.
We get precious little time with Cassandra Spender, but because of how Cartwright plays her so beautifully, she exudes warmth and sincerity every time she’s onscreen. She loves her son despite him not believing her, and she continues to love and respect Mulder and Scully even when they have their doubts about her stories too. Cartwright’s acting is quiet and understated, never too much or too little. It’s perfect.

Okay, so we know what everyone’s most irrationally hated X Files characters are. But what I’m more interested in is, what’s your X Files beige flag?
What’s that thing that definitely isn’t a popular opinion, but also isn’t a dealbreaker either?
I’ll go first. I unironically have a soft spot for Jeffrey Spender. 🤷‍♀️ Y’all feel free to roast me as you will… 😅

I asked this EXACT question in the X Files subreddit about a month ago! Like, my man got SHOT IN THE FACE in the J Edgar Hoover building and no one bats an eye OR says anything about him ever again until he crops back up three seasons later??
The angle I’ve come to see it from, and the most logical answer in my book, is that a lot of people may have considered what happened to Jeffrey to be a suicide. Think about it: he was alone in the basement office with CSM, and to our knowledge, no one saw him shoot Jeffrey (even though Scully seems to somehow know CSM was the one who shot him in William??). Jeffrey’s last interaction with Kersh, Mulder, and Scully was him saying how he was responsible for the deaths of the Syndicate at El Rico Air Force Base, including the death of his own mother, so Kersh would have known he was in a bad head space when he left his office to go pack. I think it’s plausible that Mulder and Scully, knowing what they did, probably worked out that Spender being shot was likely retribution for him switching sides, but I think the “official” FBI story was probably something along the lines of “he was distraught over losing his mother and his career, so he ended his life”. BUT, if his body was gone and the basement office cleaned up by the time anyone went down there, I think most people would just think he made good on wanting to quit and left the building without saying goodbye to anyone.
All that being said, as for anyone outside of Mulder and Scully knowing what really happened, who knows. I also think with how tight Kersh was with CSM, it’s unlikely that he would have even attempted to investigate what really happened with Spender being shot.
What did everyone think had happened to Spender?
Given that his father has nine lives, it wasn’t surprising that Jeffrey Spender survived the gunshot wound in the X-Files office. But was his body discovered, or did he just get disappeared into the medical facility for testing, the office cleaned up, and everyone just thought he quit?
I’m kind of leaning towards the latter, because the murder of an FBI agent inside the building would be huge news. But you know, I have to think the agents would suspect the abrupt departure of Spender? I don’t think he gets brought up again until season nine, and I don’t have access to that at the moment…

A heads up for any of my X Files moots who were reading my post-colonization fic “A Quiet War”. Due to the response I’ve gotten, I’ve decided to move the vignettes to just be additional chapters in the overall fic, which can now be found here.
That being said, if you’ve left comments on kudos on either the Skinner or the Lone Gunmen vignettes, please know that those kudos and comments will be lost going forward as I merge the vignettes with the ongoing fic. So, please don’t be alarmed if your comments and kudos were visible one day and suddenly aren’t! I’ve taken screenshots of all of them so I can still keep track.

One thing that I will always be desperately sad about is the relationships that Baby William never got to have with not only Mulder and Scully, but other people in his life—particularly his actual half-uncle, Jeffrey Spender, and his pseudo-uncles, The Lone Gunmen.
While Jeffrey’s attempts to get close to William are ultimately to the end of “stealing him away” from CSM and making him normal, I still believe that Jeffrey cared enough for his half-brother’s child to not want him to live a life in danger and potentially be subjected to experiments as he was. If Mulder and Scully had gone into hiding with William, would Spender have still dropped by to visit? What would his relationship with his half-nephew be like?
Meanwhile, the Gunmen purely care about William because he’s the child of two of their close friends. They understand from the beginning how special he is, and are the only three people we see who show up after his birth bearing gifts. They are also the last line of defense in protecting William when he is threatened by the alien cult, with Scully specifically telling Monica Reyes that she is giving William to the “only ones left we can trust”. Whether or not they would have been wholly competent babysitters is debatable, but their care and concern for William is there, and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see them interact with William more. One can easily imagine Byers reading the baby back issues of the Lone Gunman to get him to fall asleep, Frohike teaching him to say curse words as a toddler, and Langly not being mad when the baby messes with his hair.
Anyway, we got robbed of Baby William actually knowing his uncles and I will forever be furious about it.

One of the things that really strikes me when I go back and watch The X Files is how—despite not appearing in the series much at all—Samantha Mulder’s presence consistently haunts the show and its characters.
Her abduction first inspires and then continues to fuel her brother’s search for the truth over several years. Even characters who have never met her seem to know immediately who she is, such as the moment that Scully sees Samantha’s clone on the bridge in Season 2. Knowledge of the torturous experimentation she was subjected to as a teenager by the Cigarette Smoking Man haunts not only her brother Fox Mulder, but also the boy she was raised alongside: Jeffrey Spender. She is simultaneously grieved for by her parents, and also overlooked by them, both choosing lives of shame and secrecy, endlessly guilt-tripping their son into believing he was responsible for his sister being taken, saddling him with a guilt that will weigh on him for years to come.
Anyway, if you’ve read this far, Samantha Mulder was done dirty and she deserved way better of an ending than what she got, especially after so many things in the show can be traced back to the mystery around her initial disappearance.
