Allowing a designer to do research means opening assumptions up to scrutiny. Research is necessary for a successful design project because it gives you a shared basis for decision-making, grounded in evidence rather than in sheer authority or tenacity. And this saves time and money. While learning new stuff is great, the most important function of research is not necessarily to learn new stuff. Academic research is successful when it uncovers new knowledge, but we’re not talking about academic research. Our goal is getting good work into the world.

Medical science is getting so good that we now have tools precise enough to stitch a peel back onto a grape.

Tinctorial Textiles is a new step in the research on natural pigment. Having mainly experimented with vegetable dyes in the past it was a new step to explore the area of plant dyes. 13 curtain panels executed in semi translucent wool overlap with other eachother to create colour blends between the panels. Raw Color teamed up for dyeing the fibers with Ecological Textiles, who is specialized to work with organic wool and dying with natural colours. For the pigments we used the knowledge of Rubia Natural Colour a dutch company specialised in the development of natural colour. The applied dyes are for one part taken from the companies palette and for the other part especially developed for this project.

Insect Plates completed this year. Every specimen is hand painted individually in gouache, ink and watercolour (no sneaky digital duplication here). It’s a tedious and time-consuming process, but honest I suppose.
