…THE rough toe of her chunky, black boots clashed against the sandy gravel as she hopped out the bed of the cherry, red truck. a soft crunch beneath her feet as the july wind whipped through her hair, a gentle sound picked up only by her sensetive ears.

her soft hand stays wrapped around the neck of a dr. pepper bottle, the white, and lacy sundress she wears brushing against her knees.

the fire flicks around through the chilly night air, the moon only defining the features of her face. not many notice her, too focused on whatever theyre doing, but that doesnt bother her. theyre beneficial, those random bypassers, they help her blend.

but theyre just people to him, to chris.

he sees her.

he notices the way her hair cascades down her back, the way her necklace is rusted and deformed due to the bent safety pins it was made out of, and he even notices the slight grass stains on her knees.

he saw her. beneath piles and piles of skinny girls and tan lines, he saw that girl, and everytime he did, she always had that bottle of dr. pepper clutched in the grasp of her pale palm.

it wasnt a shock when she stumbled past the brush, into the bonfire, about an hour late. not to chris at least, he knew punctuality wasnt anywhere near the top of her agenda.

however, it did surprise him when she grabbed a faded white bottle from her shoulder bag, shaking it into her palm, and swallowing about three thick pills.

was that…benadryl? wow…poor thing cant even get her hands on propper drugs. he’d have to change that.

he clicked his teeth, leaning forward slightly to put out his cigarette on the heel of his boot, and whatever chick was on his lap had drunkenly slid back onto the towel which was laid out on the grass.

oblivious to the tall man stalking towards her, the girl rummaged around on the snack table, seemingly searching for something.

“lookin’ for somethin hun?”

she perked up, her brows raised like a deer that had been flashed with headlights.

“s-sorry? no…i was just-”

“just…” he raised his brows, the silence that followed made a low laugh bubble in his chest.

her eyes lingered on the loose button on his collar, the top three being undone, revealing a tiny bit of chest hair. his brown curly locks curled up around the base of his cowboy hat, cliche, but attractive.

“you got a name? or should i call you pepper.” he hummed, his palm resting on the table as he leaned down to be more level.

“pepper?” she questioned, but her confusion faltered as his icy gaze flicked to the bottle in her hand.

“ohh, right…”

“so do you?”

she paused, licking her lips. she did, of course, but it wasnt often that people called her by her first name, she wasnt very fond of it.

“i like pepper.” she smiled tightly, nodding her head, her southern accent peeking through her soft voice.

“pep it is.” he hummed, sucking in his cheek.

“you know, i got alotta shit in my truck, way better than bennys.” he smirked, his shiny white teeth showing beneath his plump pink lips.

those perfect, soft lips. there was no telling where theyd been, but nonetheless, that didnt stop her from following him down to the field, and into the bed of his rusty ford.
