Sometimes when you drape something, adjacent pieces end up with edges that don’t match up very well, especially corset type patterns. Below is a low waist and hips pattern I just draped. You can see how the vertical edges look awkward and don’t match very well.
Tumblr media
So what you can do is trace a piece, and lay the adjacent piece on top (the way you would sew them), and trace its edge too. So now you can really see how awkward this would be to sew.
Tumblr media
Now split the difference and draw a new edge (orange line below) right in the middle of the two. This is the new edge. Do this to all of the pieces.
Tumblr media
They will now match perfectly when you sew them, and theoretically, their sum measurement has not changed.
Here are the pieces before and after equalizing the seams:

I don’t have the money to purchase clothes patterns, but I am wondering if you can give any advice on how to make patterns off of pictures? Thank you!
Alright, get ready for a short novel of an answer.
So, as far as clothing goes, I don’t think I’ve ever personally made a complex clothing pattern from just straight up looking at the picture. Now, with basic shapes (square bag, apron, wallets, etc.) it’s pretty easy to come up with measurements that make sense since everything is square/rectangular. Here’s the advice I can give you for making clothes specifically:
Patterns are super expensive new. I’ve picked up lots of patterns at Goodwill or other thrift stores for less than $1 per piece. I also highly recommend going to estate sales for patterns!!! There are lots of sewing goodies to be found there and most of the time families don’t know what the stuff is worth (unless it’s a sewing machine then it’s usually terribly up-priced). When you do pick up patterns, pick up the ones that are super general so they can be easily modified into other variations. For example, having a pattern for a pair of boot cut pants can be easily modified to bellbottom or skinny jeans.
Thrift stores are also great for inspiration. You see a shirt you like, but the materials are a bit outdated, but it would be so cute in this other material you’re currently thinking of. If the shirt is like $4 that’s way cheaper than buying a new pattern. Seam rip it and make a pattern off of it! Have an old shirt that used to be your favorite? Take it apart and make a pattern off of it!
If you’re not familiar with making patterns off things, but you have used pre-made patterns before, it’s pretty straight forward and honestly by deconstructing a garment someone else has made you can learn a lot! A deconstructed garment is just a pattern without markings - just make notes as you take it apart for yourself later!
Now, if you see something you like online in a picture and really need to have, this is my advice: find an article of clothing you already own that is similar in appearance and make a pattern off of that. Then, make modifications you think would be necessary to achieve the look you want. (You’re going to need some big sheets of paper.) When you think you have something that may work, make a muslin of it first. You don’t want to use your more expensive material and have it come out poorly!
A fun app that you may find useful is Dress Measurement. I recently found out about it so I haven’t gotten too familiar with it yet, but it basically lets you make profiles for the people you’re sewing for so you can easily keep all the measurements you need handy!
All this being said, I am a poor college student so I understand the struggle. However, I rarely find it “cheaper” to sew my own clothes. Not only is it time consuming but, unless you’re getting a good deal on fabric, it can be just as expensive as buying new clothes. If you’re currently living in the U.S., fabric prices are soon going to be increasing due to tariffs from China.
If you’re looking to save money on clothing, my personal favorite thing to do is go window shopping for the clothes I do want, and wait for the end of the season when they go on clearance OR I find adorable clothes on clearance that no one wants because they were incorrectly manufactured and need fixed.
I save a lot of time and money by shopping for clearance, defected or non-defected.
Windsor is personally one of my favorite stores, but way too expensive. Occasionally they do a $5 clearance sale (a personal favorite) or I go in-store and they have “defect” items on clearance that I can fix and are in season.
I’m not sure if this was the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps some! ❤️

I do the same thing! Very useful information 👍
Cosplay 101: Using Patterns
Some cosplayers/costumers prefer making their own patterns while others rely on factory made patterns.  Myself?  I’m in the middle.  I do both and I also alter factory made patterns to fit my needs.  Whatever your preferred method may be, here’s a tidbit of info on the patterns offered out there.
If you just aren’t into making your own patterns or know where to start, factory made patterns may be your best option.  But which brand should you use?!  There are quite a few brands available and each one has it’s pros and cons.
Simplicity - As the name suggests, Simplicity makes beginner friendly patterns.  The instructions are easy to follow and include illustrations with each step (for the most part).  If you’ve never used a pattern in your life, I recommend starting here.  They have a great selection and also offer historically accurate patterns!
Vogue - The best part about Vogue is that they have a skill level for each available pattern: Very Easy, Easy, Average and Advanced.  And trust me when they say “advanced” they mean it!  Make sure you’re comfortable using patterns before venturing into this skill level.  The instructions with Vogue are a bit harder to follow than most but not terribly difficult.  Vogue also offers a lot of vintage inspired patterns and actual vintage patterns from their own line!  Again, check your skill level rating!
McCalls/Butterick - I grouped these two together because they are very similar.  They have some great clothing patterns but when it comes to costumes, the quality of the pattern is definitely “costume” quality.  You may find yourself making more alterations than you wanted when using McCalls or Butterick costume patterns.  Still, both companies are OK for beginners.
Kwik Sew - Need dance wear or intimate-type apparel?  Kwik Sew is great!  I’ve used many of their patterns and I personally love that they are printed on paper and not tissue.  Kwik Sew is on a intermediate level, you definitely need experience before picking up one of these.
Burda - I love the designs that Burda offers but let me tell you, these are the MOST difficult patterns to follow.  They do not include illustrations and the directions are all over the place.  When I use Burda, I usually only do so when planning to alter a pattern.  They are not beginner friendly and I wouldn’t even put them in the intermediate level.  You may want to look at one out of the package before committing to purchase!  That being said, they also offer some really nice historical patterns and world fashions.
That covers the most popular brands!  And remember if you can’t find a pattern out there for your project, don’t be afraid to try sketching your own!  There are tons of tutorials and online classes to guide you in the right direction.  You may even find a class offered at your local craft store.  The best way to try pattern making is to do just that, TRY IT!  It’s not as hard as you think. ;)

Whoot!  First vlog of 2017!  I’m currently working on a cosplay that requires a Japanese pattern, so I wanted to briefly go over how to use them.  I couldn’t cover everything as this topic can easily turn into a combo of a Japanese language class and how to read patterns, so feel free to comment or message if you have any questions!  ^^
