The thing about John, right. The thing about John. is that on many levels he has gotten many of his corners rounded off over the years. A big part of that is when he graduates from being a Captain America antagonist to a member of the West Coast Avengers and later Force Works, they need to make him not quite as obnoxious to fit into a team dynamic, or more accurately, make him obnoxious in a different way that is designed to challenge and frustrate the other members of the team, while social commentary that was his main purpose becomes a secondary feature. And in Force Works he becomes very much so an action archetype, which is also how some people write him further down the line. A lot of writers also make him a parody of himself (i.e. Dan Slott's Mighty Avengers) rather than go for the social commentary, because it's funnier and some writers lack the political bandwidth to really analyse what kind of person John Walker represents.

So he has gotten better as a person and as a character. He hasn't beaten anyone to death with his bare fists in a long time, he barely decapitates people with his shield anymore, and while he did use guns a lot in the late 2000s and early 2010s, he's gone back to generally not liking them in the 2020s. But I also think some of it is that like, the kind of conservative he represents has gotten worse? Like I've read every single issue that this man has been in, and not at his very worst, his most violent, his most bigoted, his most reactionary, would John ever storm the capital, for example. Like it's scary to think about but I do think part of why modern John has had his edges smoothed over is also because people have gotten kind of worse and writers haven't really taken John down that avenue. He's still an uncritically jingoistic man, don't get me wrong, but he isn't a Trump supporter, either. I know nobody else cares about this nuance but it's important to me.
