Typography
Picture #1 - this bus stop sign is typography because it was machine made, you can tell because it’s a plate rather than a sticker being placed on.
Picture #2 - The same thing goes for the stop sign, although the sign is placed on the plate by hand, it’s still machine printed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writing-
Picture #1 - this is  writing on this wall because it is clearly written by hand and lacks structure. Very one stroke letters.
Picture #2 - although it has a theme, this is still writing because the time of  it being created was the same as the design process for the look , all at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lettering
Picture #1 -  this is a form of lettering because even though it is hand made (or sprayed), we clearly can make the assumption that a stencil was used. This means the creation of text and type were done on two different occasions .
Picture #2 found another example of the same tag in a different color and area!

Week 12 – Questions Responding to ‘Citizen Jane: Battle for the City’
Library 11/7 @ 12pm – Sarah Taylor, Lauryn Fennell, Allie Adamec, Karis Bartlett
In what ways is Jacobs a Designer?
(S)Jane was a designer though her journalism work. She understood things from around the city and put these observations into words. She understood the city in a way of feelings and community rather than memorizing a map. Jane is a designer for her work reflecting emotions, hierarchy values, community, and observations.
(L) her activism. I find that the biggest designers in history are coming from a place of understanding things outside and within yourself. A problem that may need solving or explanation. Jacob Was on a mission to understand something outside of herself that then became her reality, so she could vision a better outcome. Solutions. As designers we work to create solutions, whether that be for the plan of the project, or the final touches. And when we make these solutions, we expect a reaction. The reaction Jane was trying to achieve was for the i to see the valueIķ” within lower income neighborhoods.
(A) Jane used her protesting and writing to influence how builders designed the city and emphasize certain topics. She was concerned about human needs with how they can work, live and socialize all within walking distance. She also wanted everyone to feel inclusive and the neighborhood not be separated, she did this by challenging planners on how they can consider diversity in the neighborhoods. Both in buildings and in the demographics of the community what can contribute to a neighborhood’s resilience and character. To do this there would have to be a varying type, size, and use of the buildings found in the city. From all of her observations she was able to write what she thought the city should look like and challenge the top corporate companies into how to design the city just by her writing.
(K) biomimicry, she drew from nature and how things might look chaotic and disorganized on the outside, however, once people grew familiar with their surroundings or an object then its system/function was understood. As a city journalist, when it came to city life, Jacobs knew how to manifest creative solutions for city issues since she had a solid understanding of how cities worked
What were 3 methods/tactics used by Jane Jacobs in her work to save Washington Square Park?
(S) protest, journalism, and fear by facts. She was the face for numerous protests, causing chaos bring attention to a cause. She of course was a journalist her entire life but writing about how abstract the city makes a community, and it is much easier to prove a point with support within that community. And lastly she had the facts. She knew and understood the environment so much that she scared her own community by talking about these plans and she planted fear in the builders who didn't want to believe that she was right.
(L)comparing, expressed real life examples rather than ideas came up with in an office building, she stated that what they were doing wasn’t beneficial to the citizens and its people, in fact, they didn’t want to be displaced and industrialized. She explains how they need to see the cities from the people’s views and needs as citizens, not corporations. “If you want to see what kind of a city can flourish you need to look at the cities where it's happening, there must be a lot of diversity continually building up, diversity of kinds of work, diversity of kinds of people.”- Jane Jacob
(A) First she was able to organize local communities together to protest and make them think of themselves as defenders of the community. Secondly as a journalist she was able to create public awareness campaigns so she can educate the public. Finally she created public protest to get the big corporations attentions. Through all of these tactics she added fear into people to create a change for the better for the city.
(K) (1) Fear tactics were used. Not necessarily to terrify the reader but to send some urgency in their direction about the issues with the city demolition “the city planners are ravaging our cities!” & “the murder of our cities.” (2) Offers the reader a chance to put their voice out and voice their discrepancies with Moses’ project as well as question everything that is happening within the city. (3)
Identify and name similarities between the movie and the text. Identify and name differences between the two.
(S)The film was similar to the text by reflecting ideas like poverty and everyday struggle as American people, not everyone will always agree and if its not this its that. The film was different from the text by the film being more specific to one social event located in New York City rather than generic talking about struggle as a whole.
(L) the similarities in the sources are definitely focusing on the American citizen. The way they differ though, Jane is more focused on community housing being stripped for the benefit of industrialization. While the speech is referring to America feeds off the people, without the hearts of the citizens , there would be no liberties or government .
(A)the similarities was that it was focused on the struggling American citizens and communities. The difference in the movie discusses how the city population was being affected by how the cooperation wanted to set up the neighborhood layouts for the benefit of industrialization. The speech talks more about the how individual peoples rights are impacted while the usa doesn’t care about how they treat the citizens
(K) Similarities: everyone is struggling, community. Differences: movie discusses city population and lifestyle, reading (spirit of liberty) discusses more of the individual and how their rights are impacted more.
Based on watching the movie and reading the required text, what is the role of the individual in a democracy?
(S) Thea role of an individual in a democracy I think is a voice. Jane noticed something everyone kind of knew and agreed upon, but she brought this feeling to life with words. And this proves that though the hundreds of people your voice really does matter if you make it matter.
(L) to speak up. To act. And to listen. In order for us to find a solution, we must advocate and express our needs so such can be acquired. Voting, protesting, reading and writing are some of the many ways we keep democracy alive.
(A) individuals are the ones who create a change and are the ones who can vote for the policies they want. By sharing their voice by protesting they keep democracy alive.
(K) an individual's role in a democracy is to vote on individuals who create policies that reflect their personal interests. By doing this they amplify their voice and opinions so that the country that the democracy is located in can follow what the people want.

Sitting and doing nothing is incredibly hard and not easy at all for me. The max I can get to it 20. It’s not that I couldn’t detach from my technology or sit in one place, but more so the thoughts that I hear in the background. I’ve always tired to keep myself busy because I find when I’m not doing “nothing” I have time to process, feel, or completely change my emotions solely because It’s just me. No fidget toy, no music, no friends, just me. Being by myself is something I enjoy entirely too much, but when I’m doing something. Not doing anything…make me feel stuck? A lack of productivity sends me spiraling because I feel as though I’m not doing enough. I’m not making enough of an effort to exist.
5 minutes , I’m okay, it’s was a nice brain break
10 minutes, I’m still okay, alil restless
15 minutes, I’m now conflicting things in my head that I wasn’t concern with because I didn’t have/want the time to focus on it
20 minutes, I reaching for my phone to turn on a playlist that expresses what I’m feeling because I’m so frustrated with my thoughts I can’t explain it myself.
We go back to the thought process that even “nothing” isn’t nothing. We are still existing, breathing, living, feeling and trying to understand even when we aren’t actively attempting too. That is definitely “something”.

Litia Perta – Writing Bodies Against Curation (2015)
Why is it frowned upon to lose yourself?
Why do people have to be defined by the system?
Is knowledge meant to be worth something, or is knowledge/intellect meant to hold power over others?
Will we ever truly feel safe in the system? If not, how can one ever truly feel safe?
If we lose ourselves to the system, how do you gain it back?
How can prompts help us reach our full potential or does it limit us from thinking outside the box?
Are you loneliest when you limit your time with people or when they limit their time with yourself?

I walk everyday for 30 minutes or more to re-center and take a break, so going outside and just existing is something I’m used to. But the last 5 times I’ve walked this week I’ve observed my surroundings more clearly and engaged. I felt the leaves crumble under my feet, the crunch, the loud noises of fall. I’m reminded now that the season is shifting,it’s getting colder, though it feels warm, and nature is taking its course of life by dying out in the most beautiful vibrant colors. I really enjoy that, seeing a scenery that’s been all green shift into a different one. I notice more signs, bumper stickers , trash and junk. One in particular said “remember your humanity”, which really spoke to me, especially during a time when I was questioning empathizing with a situation in my own personal actions.

Trash/teddy – 1st step removal: skeuomorphism – The teddy bear, Lattso, is a representation of a real life bear, simplified to a version that is easily readable and comfortable to a child. The material, the texture of the fur, is readable to that of a living bear, but in the comfortable form of a stuffed animal for a child.

Wall – step 3 removal: simulation – This is a simulation since it represents spatial limitations in an environment and how people on the daily interact with walls and buildings. Furthermore, how people alter these structures through graffiti as shown in the image.

The Modes of classification index, symbol
The modes I choose were because you can look and observer it's a trash can and trash. the symbolism would come in because you can see that there is a teddy bear there, but it not necessarily conventional so It would have to be explained.

1.The Modes of classification for this photo is Index or symbolism
2. the Modes are index and possibly symbolism because this photo is supposed to be a representation of time so I'd have to explain it. the index would be I can look at this and say that its a wall with paint, because if it was the ground, there would be foot or tread marks.

I feel like to me this photos represent idea time. Walking is honestly my safe place, and I do it very often. Since I go to school in the city I see a lot of wall art, painting , graffiti and even plaster prints. Usually they are worn down and the colors have faded out due to erosion over time from the weather. The bigger question I always ask is what was its original state? What was the artist who did the painting or prints motives? And how does it feel to watch your own work fade overtime? Time is interesting because although another person might have seem it in all its glory, I will only ever experience it while the paint is being to peel. Yes, I could look it up online. But physical seeing a work of art, the stroke, details, texture..is only a something you can fully comprehend and experience in person. I think I enjoy street art more than museum, especially being in dc for a good amount of childhood. And I’ve seen paintings when they were fresh on building to how they adjust over time. It’s like the art itself is turning into new art for you to look at differently, all because of time.

the image above represents the idea of trash holding meaning. Someone else’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’ve spoken on this concept before, based on an art project about turning trash and old objects into a curation of sorts. My take on it was a trash can which I filled with colorful trash and sentimental things. Do you ever think about what’s in someone trash? Maybe it’s junk from the attic or it could be someone belongs after they pass, a little girl stuff animal she lost, maybe even a letter that never made it to the receiver. Trash isn’t just gross and disgusting, it hold core memories, moments of one’s life. Someone entire life could be in one trash can, all their possessions and belongings, does that turn it into dirty trash? No, it’s now memories of what’s left someone, their essence.

This picture represent the concept of support and love to me because you can see the genuine happiness and presence. this is my friends having fun and taking pictures at the rocks, just enjoying each other company. The definition of love is something that has a different meaning to everyone. While one may find clarity and peace from the simple presence of their partner, others may need some type of gesture to express they care. Neither of these are wrong nor right because it’s all scenario based. Love doesn’t have to be romantic, if anything I think the love and affection you find in your friendship hold more value. As time goes on, I’ve come to realize that connection is something we do need, but there is an unhealthy obsession with trying to get to this goals or perfection of a significant other. Never lower your standard, but a lot of people want someone financially stable and have a car off the bat under the age of 25. incredibly insane given our economy, and just not realistic on a majority scale. This makes us miss out on making new connection due to materialistic thinking. the process of growing our ambitions and aspirations together can be so rewarding in a relationship. Romantic or platonic, because I feel like you always get the rawest version of someone from their character, not what they have. Again, nor is right or wrong. I think my personal preference is knowing my friends/partner or family likes me for me, not what car, house, and clothes I have. Supporting me and guiding to get to my goals, even if I’m not there yet!
