that laios/shuro (toshiro?) argument means a lot to me because on one hand i have been laios and i have been excited to be around people who just would. not. say. that they didnt like me around until they did it in a way that was incredibly painful and confusing when that could have been easily avoided by a short conversation at the time of offense.

on the other hand i have been shuro experiencing that naive racism from someone who doesn't know much outside his bubble & its really hard to confront directly because its not coming from a bad place necessarily, but it is truly drenched in the racial biases that a culture has baked in. and that can be very exhausting to try and explain to someone after being bombarded by such, especially if they seem completely unaware of it being a problem.

its a situation where both characters are sympathetic to me, at least a little.

Just want to note I am also an autistic woman - I mostly agree with this, so please don’t think I’m discrediting this analysis at all, but I do think it is fair to point out that Falin doesn’t display the same (outward) traits as Laios. While Falin’s traits cause her trouble in neurotypical situations, she’s quieter, and appears to take others into (some) consideration, so she flies under the radar a bit more - though that’s very much not the case when she was at school.

Shuro went about ‘courting’ Falin in the worst way possible 😭 So in a way he was in love with the idea of her, but I don’t think it was for the same traits (like I tried to outline earlier). He likes bugs, saw she likes bugs, very basic but hey! Laios is more chatty and open to more people, which makes his misinterpretation of social cues more obvious. So for Shuro, who I’m guessing was raised in a conservative environment, this was more difficult to deal with. And also, to be honest, while Shuro’s complaints about Laios were unfair and unkind, he was within his rights to feel unhappy about how Laios went on - but again, he should not have expected him to understand subtle social cues, regardless.

Anyway that was way too long and I’m sorry, I couldn’t be more concise :(

The newest dunmesh episode really hit.

The fact that Shuro ridicules Laios for the very same traits he loves Falin for. This is a very common phenomenon with male vs female autistics.

Let me explain.

I am an autistic woman. My best friend is an autistic man. People are generally drawn to me at first because they are romanticizing my autistic traits into the “manic pixie dream girl” trope. To them, I’m quirky, funny, free spirited, “not like other girls”. It usually doesn’t last long though, because when they get to know me it becomes less charming. But I still have the advantage in first-time social interaction.

My male best friend on the other hand, is constantly targeted for his autistic traits. Traits that are IDENTICAL to mine. Let me be clear, we are EXTREMELY similar. He is the male version of me. People think he’s off-putting and weird (even though he’s wonderful).

Shuro is clearly in love with the IDEA of Falin. He’s in love with the romanticized version of her, but he doesn’t really KNOW her.
