Bitcoin and other crypto currencies are based on a complicated technology known as block chain, This acts like a digital ledger of all transactions completed with the currency. It’s somewhat similar to the serial number that you can find on every currency note, But it actually means something because it makes Bitcoin nearly impossible to counterfeit. The exploding value of Bitcoin has many observers predicting the launch of a U.S.-backed digital crypto currency, Colloquially known as Fedcoin. And there are many reasons beyond fighting counterfeiting to switch to a digital dollar. Cash has the distinct advantage of being anonymous. You can put cash under your mattress or in a vault, And no one knows about it except you. A national crypto currency would make it far more difficult for criminals, To board money because all transactions would be recorded in the government ledger. If a transaction was deemed illegal, The parties to the transaction could be identified. This is also true with Bitcoin, whose ledger is viewable to anyone. Despite the negative press about Bitcoin being used for illegal transactions, Bitcoin is not anonymous, And criminals who use it often do not understand that their transactions are being recorded. We want crypto currencies to stay completely independent, and we definitely do not want the Federal Reserve and other global central banks to start creating their own versions. Because of course once they create their own versions they will want to start restricting the use of any competitors. The one thing that could derail the crypto currency revolution faster than anything else would be interference by national governments or global central banks.
Unfortunately, now that #Bitcoin, #Litecoin, #Ethereum and other crypto currencies are getting so much attention, it is inevitable that the powers that be will make a move.

NVIDIA is shaping up to be the most consistent chipmaker in the industry when it comes to per-generation performance and energy efficiency gains. Over the past three generations, spread across the past four years, the company successfully developed increasingly more energy efficient GPUs, which sees its culmination with the Pascal architecture that powers the GeForce GTX 1080 we are reviewing today.

The GeForce GTX 1080 is based on NVIDIA’s “Pascal” architecture. This architecture sees the streaming multiprocessors (SMs), the indivisible subunits of an NVIDIA GPU, get even more dedicated components, which increases their performance. NVIDIA claims to have “meticulously” designed the GPU architecture to be as energy efficient as possible given the silicon fab node and is leveraging the 16 nm FinFET node at TSMC for “Pascal.”
The GTX 1080 features more CUDA cores than its predecessor – 2560 vs. 2048. It features even more TMUs (160 vs. 128) and, at 8 GB, double the memory. Memory technology sees a major update with NVIDIA’s adoption of the GDDR5X memory standard. The memory is clocked at a staggering 10 GHz effective, which gives the GPU 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth over a 256-bit wide memory interface.

In this review, we’re taking a close look at the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X, the company’s premium air-cooled GTX 1080 graphics card. With this card, MSI is debuting the new TwinFrozr VI cooling solution, which is mated with a custom-designed PCB by the company. The two enable a significant factory overclock for more performance and, hopefully, less noise than the GTX 1080 Founders Edition. This comes at a premium, though.
In our launch review of the GeForce GTX 1080, we expressed our fears that NVIDIA’s decision to go with two MSRPs for the GeForce GTX 1080 could set a potentially dangerous precedent. The company launched the GTX 1080 at an SKU MSRP of $599; however, it set the MSRP of its own reference-design card at $699 and sold it as the “GTX 1080 Founders Edition.” We saw the potential for NVIDIA’s board partners to see $699 rather than $599 as the base-line pricing for the GTX 1080 to then accordingly price their custom-design boards.
Take, for example, the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Gaming, which launched at $580, a $31 premium over the $549 SKU MSRP of the GTX 980. The MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X, on the other hand, is launching at $719, a $120 premium over the $599 SKU MSRP for the GTX 1080, which is a $20 premium over the GTX 1080 Founders Edition. Over the 4-years since the GTX 600 series, MSI has priced its “Gaming” series products by no more than 5% over the reference. Could this confirm our suspicions? We sure hope not. Hopefully, this is just due to an acute supply issue that will be sorted out soon.

Last week there were widespread reports that the AMD Radeon RX 480, the company’s new Polaris-based graphics card, suffered from power draw issues. Specifically, the card would draw more power from the PCIe graphics slot than the specificiation allows, which could cause damage to motherboard components down the track.
As promised, AMD has released a driver update to address the problem. Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 is now available, and offers two solutions to the RX 480’s power draw: either shift the excess power draw to the PCIe power connector, or limit the total power consumption of the card.
AMD’s primary solution is to shift the power draw to the 6-pin connector, although this does cause the connector to draw more power than its specification allows. However, unlike with the graphics slot on most motherboards, power supplies tend to be very tolerant of PCIe power connectors drawing more power than typically allowed.
There is also a ‘compatibility mode’ toggle available within Radeon Settings that limits the RX 480’s power consumption so that neither the graphics slot nor the 6-pin connector draw more power than is allowed. This does have a small effect on performance, however in AnandTech’s testing they found the performance hit was low enough to be within the margin of error for their benchmarks.
The 16.7.1 drivers include small performance boosts up to 3% for some games running on Polaris cards, and there are a collection of other bug fixes that have also been implemented.
As always, you can download the latest Radeon Software Crimson Edition drivers through Radeon Settings automatically, or you can download a manual installer from our driver download section here. Owners of RX 480 cards in particular should update their drivers to this version as soon as possible.
To that end, 16.7.1 rolls out a two tier solution to the problem.
Shift some of the power load off of the PCIe Graphics (PEG) slot connector in order to bring PEG slot power consumption within the PCIe spec. This doesn’t reduce total power consumption and performance is unaffected; power delivery is merely shifted. Based on earlier data this will put the 6-pin connector further over spec, but the vast majority of PSUs are very tolerant of this going out of spec.
Because total power consumption of RX 480 can still exceed 150W – and as a result also exceed the limits for the 6-pin connector – AMD has also implemented an optional a “compatibility” toggle that reduces the total power consumption of the card. This is to better ensure that both the PEG slot and 6-pin power connector stay below their respective limits. Since the RX 480 is already throttling at times due to power limits, this does hurt performance (more on that below), but it’s also the most standards-compliant solution.
Along with the power changes, the driver also incorporates some previously scheduled bug fixes and performance improvements. This includes fixing GTA V stuttering, and small performance boosts for a limited number of games that AMD states should improve performance by up to 3%.
Finally, the 16.7.1 driver can be found on AMD’s website. Note that the driver itself is not WHQL certified, but given AMD’s rush to get it out ASAP, I don’t imagine they were interested in waiting for WHQL certification to come back before releasing them.
Diving into matters then, PC Perspective has already taken a look at the new driver and done individual power rail measurements, finding that AMD’s fixes work more-or-less as advertised. They have found some edge cases where the card is still drawing a watt or two more power from the PEG slot than the specification allows, though at this point we’re arguing over inches. It should be noted however that even in compatibility mode, PC Perspective is still finding that power consumption is technically exceeding 75W on the 6-pin connector, though like the PEG slot by notably less than when not using compatibility mode.
Meanwhile to look at the performance impact of the new driver, I quickly ran our RX 480 through a selection of games at 2560×1440, both with and without compatibility mode.
In standard mode where power consumption isn’t curtailed, performance is essentially unchanged outside of Tomb Raider, which is one of the games targeted for optimization. Essentially this proves that there’s no performance impact from merely shifting power consumption off of the PEG slot to the 6-pin power connector.
Meanwhile in compatibility mode, there is a very small performance hit, though it varies with the game. Compared to standard mode, we’re looking at no more than a 1fps performance drop (~3%), with some games losing only a fraction of a frame per second. That there is a performance drop is consistent – so compatibility mode isn’t free – but overall the performance change is within the +/- 2% margin of error for these benchmarks.

Finally, when it comes to power consumption, measurements at the wall back up our earlier findings. In standard mode, power consumption at the wall bobbles by a couple of watts compared to the 16.6.2 drivers. With compatibility mode on, we see power consumption drop by 18W under Crysis 3, and 13W under FurMark. The average GPU clockspeed in both cases is similarly reduced, with Crysis 3 shaving off around 50MHz.
Anyhow, we’ll have a bit more on the subject in next week’s full Radeon RX 480 review. But in the meantime it looks like AMD has been able to get a handle on their power problems and largely rectify them within the span of a week, making for a fairly quick recovery on the RX 480’s launch fumble.
