Exhibition-OffPrint London 2023
Offprint London 2023 provided an immersive exploration into the world of printing techniques and zine culture. I had the opportunity to learn about various printing methods and their impact on the visual presentation of photographs.
From traditional offset and letterpress printing to RISOgraphy and digital techniques, Offprint London showed the possibilities in print media. The most interesting thing(in my opinion) is this inflation balloon: Every time when it was sold a unit, its price will rise one unit. Easy to understand and very clear show the market demand, unique pricing strategy( extremely attract wired customers like me)
Exploring these creations allowed me to observe different approaches to content creation, design, and storytelling. I learned from the innovative use of layout, typography, and imagery, gaining insights into effective ways of communicating ideas and narratives through print media.
Also It is very lucky to see many individual publishers from China attending this event to boost the cross-culture communication.

Exhibition: Photo London
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to photo London last weekend and wanted to draw some inspiration from the large-scale photography exhibition and refer to other people's thinking about photography. The scale of the whole exhibition is very large, but it is relatively confusing to me, but it is very diverse. The exhibition showcased works from artists around the globe, each bringing their unique cultural, social, and personal narratives. For example, I really like the photography of one of the Japanese photographers TAKASHI ARAI, the content is lilies, but it uses a daguerreotype on the metal plate, which means that it is difficult to see the image under reflection, only in special points of light reflection and background to see the image clearly.
This use of traditional skills encouraged me to reflect on the evolving role of technology in photography. It made me consider how I can leverage digital tools and innovations to enhance my own work and engage with audiences in unique ways.
I found similarities in the works I like to shoot: the need for other mediums to break the original to add interest, such as in collage, embroidery on old photos, visible points of metal reflection, the use of chemical elements, and the Reshaping of presentation (such as making 3D sculptures and enclosing photographs in them)
Each photograph had a story to tell, capturing moments, emotions, and social issues. The exhibition allowed me to witness different approaches to storytelling, from documentary-style narratives to conceptual and abstract interpretations.

Development- Content image
Based on the previous sketch and dummies book, the whole book will narrate my life, not complain and not enjoy, without any emotion just record.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is inspired by the poem:
“But don’t speak of gardens. Don’t speak of the moon. Don’t speak of roses or the sea. Speak of what you know. Speak of the thing that rings in the marrow, that plays in your eyes with shadow and light. Speak of the endless ache in your bones. Speak of vertigo. Speak of respiration and of desolation and of your treason. It’s so dark, so silent, this process that grips me. Just speak of the silence. — Alejandra Pizarnik, Extracting the Stone of Madness: Poems 1962 – 1972. (New Directions; 1 edition May 17, 2016)”  ― Alejandra Pizarnik, Extracting the Stone of Madness: Poems 1962 - 1972"
Unlike Pizarnik, I am not suffering as that, but still Just speak of the silence.
Through the last tutorial time, other said feeling a kind of peace and tranquillity in my book, I added more shadow. As you read through the pages, you can find the shadow is getting darker. just trying to balance the" peace" inside.

Development: Final zine demo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I refer to Duo a Duo, the first and last two books, and add an extra page to make a cycle zine, which is composed of two bindings, which can make people turn pages continuously. This cycle serves my story: the monotony of repetition. The absence and presence of people in space gives meaning.
I use 4 grids to describe the events on each page. The background is the place where each page takes place. Due to the translucency of the paper, the overlapping of each page will make the two event places overlap, but it is still a bit confusing now. I need Try a cleaner drawing method.

Development-PaperTest+Book Demo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought a 70GSM translucent tracing paper and a free texture paper (about 50GSM) for experiments.
Thank you RCA's A2 newspaper is very useful. I can directly cut the color block and stick it on the paper, and you can see the transparent color of each layer. I chose color blocks and lines, and found that the transparency of the 70GSM tracing paper is too high.
Another kind of paper was cut into A5 to make a small instantbook in order to realize my idea of another book-demo. the result is very satisfying to me.

Personal Development
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Try to use A3 waste newspapers to make some experimental products. My zine will be a microcosm of my daily life. I will choose the place I sit most often or the road I walked to represent myself and my personal memory.
I have tried three types in total: 1. One-point binding in the book page, 2. Front and rear mirror images, 3. Instant book but poster style (each page is a corner). I like all three, but I finally decided to make the first one first: one-point binding: I want to print my environmental memory from different perspectives on translucent paper, and after stacking them together, the audience can only Rotating or turning the page in half to read the next page, this way of reading is like spying on another person's living memory, just like we are browsing other people's social media, or like a movie Rear Window.

2rdWorkshop--Narrative storytelling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week's workshop mainly focuses on the control of narrative sense. The narrative sense of a photo or picture lies in the fact that the audience obtains information from the details in the picture and infers it to generate a new logically feasible linear time event. Therefore, from the perspective of the illustrator, the cause can be reversed or forwardly deduced based on the picture of this frame, so as to visualize it. And the position of this frame will change the visualization process of the previous and subsequent frames. We can subjectively control the sense of time.
The seagull I drew was purely to bring some fun to my boring life: I exaggerated its image to make it look more stupid, just like in FALSE KNEE comics
HAHA I have the special power to create Trash Art. Quite proud of this.

Research-Exhibition ISAAC JULIEN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is ISAAC JULIENz's solo show at tate. It consists of film and television works of various periods (very cinematic). The first work is a large-scale multi-screen media video that discusses the rise and fall of African culture in society. In this short film, he uses multiple cameras from different angles to shoot in one scene, so that different perspectives of different stories are interlaced on multiple screens, resulting in a compressed overlap of time and place. In many of the works, the camera is placed in unusual and unexpected locations, such as from a bird's eye view or in the midst of a crowd. This creates a disorienting effect that forces the viewer to re-examine their perception of the space in which the action is taking place. By changing the camera position, Julien is able to create a sense of both depth and flatness, which further contributes to the overall sense of disorientation.
I think this kind of shooting method can even be used in my book production. I can use translucent paper for effect output. Although it lacks mobility, it will increase the sense of overlap.

Hand and Eye
Record my favorite zine:
The use of monochrome in the first book, the combination of reality and painting, the lines are the derivative of reality.
Some printing hidden inside the cover
Lines document everyday life and a strangely absurd sense of humor: toilet jokes.

Hand and Eye—Workshop
April 25
Today's workshop allowed me to observe everyday objects up close for the first time: I was carrying a school badge that my friend gave me.
Different emotions give different properties to the same object. I look at my paintings more like a viewer, but with a designer's perspective.
I found that I especially like to overlap different angles of the same object in the same picture, which has a sense of separation and fragmentation. It's like the same object exists in different times and places.
I always want to express some of my favorite cute objects: food/puppy, but the effect is always inadvertent. But I don't have the depth of thought like philosophy, and I don't have the emotional outlet like a madman, which puts my works in a very embarrassing position.

Through a lens-development 3.0
This is the frame-by-frame drawing I did in the Wednesday workshop sessions. My initial idea is to record the real-life human figure- the special gesture that occurred in the game representing his ex wife) with Glowing Lungs ( because of her love, her lungs start to glow)
I took a video of myself as background but this time AE did not show the visual effect I wanted so I adjust this using gradient map in Procreate.( I knew it's not good but at least I got the effect I needed)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So every layer I move the background down a little bit and the lungs are growing and started to glow. total of 16 frames but I did in 1 and half hours. Can't believe it.
I did not separate the layers and combine them in PR because the blend modes can not give me the right effect:((

Through a Lens- Development 3.0
This scene is the Hanging Harry under Disco Ball My favourite one!! Yeah finally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I drew this poor guy first as I already did the disco ball in the previous " bottle turning into disco ball" And combined these two image together as this main frame.
Due to Harry is so drunk and dying, I just decided to let him keep still and only the disco ball rotating with the light reflection on his body. Sounds like a simple movement so I just drew it frame by frame, separating the disco ball and the light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the final effect is shown above(the original file size is above Tumblr's maximum file size so it is after compress.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The street lights downstairs in my house flicker at night like a disco ball that hangs people, so I recorded it and used it as the background for this scene. I used AE for color adjustment to match this miserable dark cold blue and purple main style.
Tumblr media
As it is a long image, I set the camera to move down from the disco ball to the hanged Harry by using the keyframe in position( shown above) When the vocals in the background paused, I changed the blend mode to change the color of the portrait (although it looks the same as lsd) I think this will make my emotional expression more prominent.

Through a Lens-Project development 2.0
in this session, I will introduce my development for theme 2: open mouth and drinking.
Tumblr media
I first made one style frame just as the dried may bell one( really helpful for me to see the final visual effects) And the next step is to make it move.
Tumblr media
I separated this scene into two layers: one is the mouth but as a background I do not want it to move so I used boiling.
Tumblr media
And then is the up layers: many many many bottles and turning into a disco ball. I chose the alcohol pouring out as a transaction and distort it into a disco ball. These bottles are from the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Import to PR to adjust the final visual effect and add layers together using different blend modes, finally I chose multiply for bottles and divide for the mouth: just want the bottles to be no that obvious as we usually do not notice how much alcohol we already take in::::

Through a Lens- Working process
The first part done!( video shown above) I used Pr to combine all the images and video together.
For the real-life video as background, I used AE to edit the whole atmosphere, creating a visual effect that is impossible in reality.I unified the hue of the video to blue-purple. It is like a hallucination that appears in the consciousness after being drunk, and it gives people a negative emotion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The function of AE is very powerful, I also added noise to the shake of the wine in the first part. I showed the video to my friends because the smoothness of the video made it hard for the audience to see what the object was. I tried to use the jpeg image export format and took out some of the frames, and slowed down the speed. Now it is more clear
Tumblr media
In the mouth part, I used rotoscoping to trace the movement of the opening mouth. This line sketch added another layered on the background turning out pretty cool. Although there is little position mistake, I decided to leave it.
