Last Disco Elysium writer laid off by ZA/UM speaks out
“The fish starts rotting from the head,” says Argo Tuulik
“The mask has slipped from the face of capital. What remains at ZA/UM is a cold, careless company where managers wage war against their own creatives, where artistry is second to property, and where corporate strategy is formed by an arrogant disdain for their own audience.”
i made a post like 3 hours ago about 3 cases against za/um being dropped and hidden behind news about collage update
And now Kurvitz and Taal (Rostov's alias) sent a statement to GamesIndustry.biz saying they didn't withdraw their claims for lack of evidence. They state their dismissal is a "part of a larger campaign" against them and they "will pursue legal options accordingly."
They added that "paying back stolen money, however, does not undo the crime; here, it does not undo the majority that Kompus and Haavel have illegally gained in ZA/UM."
They also stated that they will not be silenced in this ongoing legal dispute
If you are interested, i made a full timeline post about the entire situation from the beginning
The ZA/UM debacle is so so heart wrenching man it's tragic, it's poetic, it's literally more of a thematic sequel to Disco Elysium than anything the remaining shell of the company will ever be able to churn out.
re the za/um shit while i understand the rhetorical value of calling haavel and kompus 'thieves' or saying that the DE creators have been 'cheated' out of their creation, i think it's really important to remember that this is copyright law and IP protection working as designed. it is not an abuse of the framework of intellectual property, it is the de facto standard use case of it. like it's very likely all this will go to court and it'll turn out that all of this is entirely legal because allowing corporate entities to forcefully enclose creative works--often with the creators on the other side of the fence--is not a perversion of copyright law, but its main purpose!

One source blamed mismanagement for the current situation, claiming that management was “always acting like there was an enemy, be it the old Disco team, the press, or even people working there” and consequently failed to value its existing talent, allegedly preferring to hire fresh blood from outside rather than promoting employees from within the company. They also said “I don’t think women were treated the same and that their work wasn’t as valued.”
JEAN VICQUEMARE - "You told us to fuck off. You said we're *cramping your style*. You're *Detective God*. Fuck everything. All will burn. Detect or die!"
I just realized we probably would be playing another game set in Elysium if ZA/UM wasn't such a shitshow. It's been long enough since disco elysium has come out, if there wasn't any corporate fuckery we would be playing the sequel right fucking now, and what's worse, disco elysium was an introduction to the setting, we could have had so much more. The best RPG ever made that is made by and about communism got shredded to pieces by capitalism.
