The first time he sees her he’s by the old pond. She finds him easily, Artemis on the prowl. Her beauty steals his breath for a moment, it breaks into the endless suffocating days of mourning with a gust of wind. Icy, invigorating. There is no time to savor it. He heard what she had said.

He forces the gaze away from her face.

He takes in her clothes, notices the watch on her wrist. White gold, neat but expensive — the kind not worn by the new rich, but the kind that adorns the wrists of Europe's first ladies and American trust-fund heiresses. Her posture is just as straight, her suit is perfectly ironed, and there’s not a speck of dust left on her shoes by the trail she took to get to him.
