“Hope in dystopia”

Katniss Everdeen came into the spotlight soon after the reaping ceremony when she volunteered for the games -as tribute- to save her sister. Her sacrifice was impossible to ignore. Yet, no one could have predicted that the ‘Girl on Fire’ would bring such a revolutionary and progressive change to the entire nation of Panem. President Snow said in the film, “Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark if fine, as long as it’s contained.” It is amazing that even in a land with no strong beliefs in a higher power (or God), there is a poignant feeling of hope all through the story. There was no such indication in the book that showed any religious or spiritual activities. The first interaction between Katniss and Peeta mirrors a feeling of hope. After the demise of her father, the herculean task of providing for her family fell on Katniss’ shoulders. It was her responsibility to take care of them and not let them starve to death. She would hunt illegally in the woods and bring back whatever she could for her family. She was determined never to return home empty handed, without food for the table. Peeta, who came from a family of bakers, couldn’t stop himself from helping her when he saw her struggling. So, he burned some bread purposefully from his parent’s bakery and tossed the bread to Katniss rather than the pigs. That piece of bread - to Katniss - was hope! Such small acts of kindness can bring hope to anyone. This hope acted as a catalyst in the transformation of a spark into a fire, “a girl on fire”. She emerged with desire for change; a better world; a better Panem. This fire spread faster than a wildfire amongst the people of all the districts. People from all the districts united to bring this revolutionary change. It changed the course of Panem’s future.  Hope can bring all kinds of progress to society. All it takes is a single spark!
