apparently a pair of loons have decided to try nesting in the pond of the little park area across the road from my place, and hearing their calls reminds me of my childhool home. I kinda wish they would choose to go to a bigger puddle though, that pond does not have a very positive track record when it comes to ducklings each year :/ it has a bunch of mallards and some wigeons as its regular inhabitants and year after year i hear from local birdwatchers that most of the ducklings did not make it through summer. if the gulls dont kill them all then some assholes will. But the mallards and wigeons are also way more used to people, they'll follow people around and come nibble your shoes if you sit at a bench for a moment, they're so used to getting treats. so maybe the loons have a better chance staying safe, i don't remember seeing them there even once in the last 6 years i've lived here. gorgeous birbs though. such sleek design.
