Breaking Down Vader’s Mask for Artists.

So I was paid to explain my process with Vader’s mask and what I keep in mind when drawing him. I’ve never done a tutorial like this, and this is more a massive “explanation” than a “How-To”. I have a small step-by-step that’ll be at the bottom of this post. I hope my handwriting is eligible and this makes sense. (Open this image in a new tab to get full res)

As an artist I do take creative liberties with Vader. I exaggerate things and “bullshit” others (ie: Vader’s atmospheric sensors). The “style” and method I use drawing Vader is 13 years in the making. Yes. I’ve been drawing this walking disaster for 13 years. I don’t bother being massively film accurate, but I had to learn to be at first so I could bend Vader the way I wanted. His mask is something that needs to be seen in form. It’s important, when using a photo as reference to look at the mask as form and not just a flat image.

Googling “3D Model of Vader’s helm/mask” will result in great resources. I have used 3D models of Vader’s mask when I can’t get my replica in the difficult angle I’m aiming for.
