Planning Vacation
Vacations are a great time and it’s nice to get away but they can often hurt the wallet. This is because planning for the vacation is usually done after setting the date. And why would’t it be ? Let me show you.
Rule #1: Always run a Google Flights search before you set the vacation dates
Step One: Go to Google Flights and Enter Your Closest Airport
Note: Do not enter a destination or dates. Simply enter the airport that you will depart from and click Search
Step Two: Click On the Calendar and Select ‘Flexible Dates’
You can select to find the cheapest flights for the entire year or by month.
Step Three: Modify Your Search Preferences (Maybe Even Look For the Cheapest Business Class Flight This Year)
Options:
Round Trip or Direct Flight
Number of Passengers
Economy- First Class
Number of Stops to Destination
Airlines Preference
Note: You do not necessarily need to change any of these. This step is optional, but I personally do not want 5 stops and 50 hours to my destination.
Step Four: Use the Map to Find Your Destination
You can drag the map around and zoom to find your destination. Click on your destination and look through the available flights.
Step Five: Set Your Vacation and Book Your Flight
Always select the flight and ensure that the availability is correct on the airlines website. Flights can appear on Google Flights when there is no availability. These typically have the “Call Airline” option.
Following these steps can save you hundreds of dollars on your vacation travel. When available, always plan your vacation dates around your travel and not your travel around your vacation dates. Also, consider booking your travel through an online travel agent like Expedia or Orbitz for the 24 hour no-penalty cancellation. These sites also offer good value when bundling flights and hotels together. However, caution that the customer service for these types of sites are often horrible and not worth it if something comes up.

I would like to start off by saying this was one of my favorite trips and this is definitely my favorite between Kauai and Oahu. The Island is as pretty as the pictures! Kauai is the Garden Island because majority of the island is untouched. This is apparent as soon as you leave the airport and start driving. It is easy to obey the slow speed limits while you are looking at the beautiful green scenery. There are so many things to do and see on the garden island.
This is the drive to our resort
Let’s start at the airport (LIH). It is a tiny airport with a super laid back feeling. Security is even seemingly relaxed… We got our rental car and even got an upgrade! We ended up rolling off the lot with a new convertible Mustang. And then we saw it… the slowest speed limit signs ever. I believe that the top speed limit on the island is either 50 or 55 miles per hour with most roads being only 30 or 35 mph. I guess that it is appropriate for the laid back lifestyle that comes with Hawaii!
Koloa Landing Resort
After a 25 minute drive to our Koloa Landing resort, we checked in and got settled into our Luxury Villa. The place was absolutely beautiful! It had everything we needed and more. If you go to Kauai, take this resort into consideration. Oh, and the resort had a huge pool. If getting in the ocean is not your thing, then you will love this. There is a spa and delicious (and a little expensive) dining at the resort as well.
This is the sandbar that divides Poipu Beach.
Next stop was the beach. The resort is super close to the ocean, however, it is a 10 minute walk to the beach. There are parking spots near the beach, but i did not want to dirty the car with sand so I walked. There is a good variety of beaches within close distance to one another. The first beach was Kiahuna beach and it was very relaxing and laid back. This beach is good for adults and kids. The next beach down is the Poipu Beach Park. This is the most popular beach in the area because it offers a lot. It has received many Top 5 Beach awards nationally and worldwide. I loved this beach because there is a sandbar splitting the beach in half which provided calm areas for those trying to relax and with kids on the west side, and areas for snorkeling, swimming, and surfing on the east side. There was also a small area with a rip current that is well marked, so you do not have to worry about not knowing where it is. We snorkeled at the beach, but I would not recommend snorkeling in the rip current as it can be difficult to control yourself. Be cautious in this area because people have died (mostly drunk but not all).

The best thing about Kauai was all of the activities other than the beaches. But I must say that the #1 thing that you can do in Kauai is to take a helicopter ride over the Na Pali coastline. Seriously. We bought tickets with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours and it could not have been any better. We took a 50 minute helicopter ride around the Island seeing everything from the Waimea Canyon (I talk about this later) to the Na Pali Coast. Almost all of Kauai is untouched and it could not be more apparent as you are flying over nothing but trees, waterfalls, and canyons. It is truly beautiful. Then you get to the Na Pali coast and you are easily convinced that you have never seen anything so beautiful.
This is the view from the hiking trail at Waimea Canyon. See if you can locate the helicopter in this picture. Hint: You probably can’t.
After the helicopter tour, we decided to hike through the Waimea Canyon. We took the Canyon trail which is a total of 4 miles and it took about 2.5 hours. It is a moderately difficult trail that results in a beautiful view over the canyon.
This is not the 800 ft waterfall, but this is the picture friendly waterfall right above it!
After the canyon view, there is a waterfall that drops 800 feet. And I was brave (stupid) enough to video myself standing on the ledge holding on to nothing but a tree two inches in diameter. I sadly do not have a picture of it to upload here. The trail was a lot of fun, but I was exhausted by the end.

The next day we took a boat ride to the Na Pali coast. It is only accessible by boat and… a 22 mile round trip hike. Forgive me, but I did not hike that. However, it is regarded as the best hike in all of America. The boat ride was nothing short of amazing. There are two options: a huge Catamaran or a small dual-motored raft. We took the small raft with a company called Blue Dolphin Kauai. If you take the small raft, HANG ON. You sit on the side of the raft hanging on to some handles while your feet are tucked under a black rope. You will feel every single wave for a total of nearly 40 miles(worth it). The benefit of taking this raft is the ability to enter sea caves that the Catamaran cannot reach. Half way through the ride, we stopped at a beach to take a swim and get something to eat. The tour guide took us on a walk for a while and gave us a history lesson on the tribe that used to inhabit that small area. It was quite interesting. On the way back, the tour guide pointed out an island in the distance called Niihau. It is “The forbidden island” and nobody can go there.
The Wailua Waterfall is the perfect place to take a break and swim. You can walk right up underneath the waterfall, but watch out because there are slippery rocks!
On our last day before leaving, we went kayaking to the Wailua Waterfall with a company called… Wailua Waterfall Kayaking. We ended up kayaking for a total of 60-90 minutes and hiking for a total of two miles. Half way was the treasure of the trip: the Wailua Waterfall. This is where you rest, eat some sandwiches, and swim under the waterfall. This trip is a great workout for your total body, so be ready. Bring sun screen and bug spray!
I took this picture through the window at the airport while we were waiting for our flight. Goodbye Kauai 😦
Then the sad reality sunk in: We had to go back home. I will be returning to Kauai as soon as possible. I would recommend this to anyone that loves nature and outdoor activities. It is paradise, but it does not have to break the bank. Find out how to find when the cheapest flights are here. Have you been to Kauai? If so, let me know about your experience and what you did while you were there!

P.s. There are a few scenic areas where you can pull off on the side of the road during the drive to the Waimea Canyon!

The Most Important Step to Free Travel
I will come right out and say it... Free travel is not the 1-Step process that many popular pages claim that it is. However, it does not have to be a grueling process that drains your time and energy. The most important step to free travel is setting up the system. The truth is that you will not have to change where you spend your money or how much you spend to get free/discounted travel. It is not hard and I will show you how to do it in this post. Bear with me:
Step One: What Credit Cards Do You Have?
Credit cards are the most commonly used method to acquire benefits used for free travel for a reason: They are the foundation to maximizing your benefits and travel. What you need to know is that not all cards are created equal. However, do not be discouraged if you do not have one of the premium Travel Cards. You just need a card that has a point reward system that can be used for travel. The next steps will really boost your card(you may be surprised).
Many articles are already on the web outlining the best cards to use, and I will give my opinion on this in a future post. In short, you want to look for a card that maximizes the amount of rewards you receive by tailoring them to YOUR spending habits. Don’t get a popular card if the spending categories do not match your lifestyle. Another great perk of these cards can be the signing bonus! The signing bonus alone can often get you a free flight.
Example: If you spend a lot on Groceries, then get a card that gives you a reward bonus for buying groceries. You could get the Amex EveryDay Card which allows you to get 2x points at Supermarkets.
Step Two: Read Your Cards Benefits... AND USE THEM!
People miss out on most rewards simply by not using what they already have. Go to your cards Web page and look at the deals that you are missing out on. All major cards have their own version and there is a lot of value packed in !
Example: Discover Deals include an ‘Extra 5% Cash Back’ link for shopping at Walmart. Simply click the Walmart link, purchase your groceries or other items and that is it ! A total of 6% Cash Back instead of a measly 1%. It adds up. If you spend only $250 on groceries a month and use the method I just mentioned, you will receive $180 back annually instead of only $30. Note that cash back is not the best method for free travel.
A general rule of thumb is that you are doing it wrong if you are buying something online without additional rewards.

Step Three: Choose Your Favorite Airlines and Sign up for the Frequent Flyer Program (It’s Free)
This step is actually important for the next two steps. Airlines have Dining Programs and Shopping Portals designed to help you earn additional miles. (Pro Tip: Miles are the end game to all rewards). Do some research and see what airlines are transfer partners with your credit card, which have the most flights that pertain to you, and which would be your prefferred airline to fly with. I personally fly with American because they have a hub where I live which means that they have many options for direct flights! However, it is nearly impossible to transfer Credit Card Reward points to American, so I choose to use the British Airways Frequent Flyer Program and then book American flights from there. (Tip: You can often book flights on other partner airlines using your own airlines frequent flyer miles.)
Step Four: Enroll in the Airlines Dining and Shopping Programs
This step is a lot like Step #2. Chances are that your favorite airlines have these programs where all you have to do is enroll your card and you will receive free miles on top of your basic card rewards. I will explain both the Dining and Shopping programs and show you how simple it can be.
1. Dining Programs: Airlines have dining programs where all you have to do is enroll your card and then use it when you pay at the restaurant. Simple. It does not have to be an Airline Branded Card; it can be any card.
Example: United has a Dining portal and includes my favorite Mexican Restaurant, Meso Maya. When I eat there, I get an additional 3 miles/$1 on top of my cards basic benefits. If I use the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, I will earn 2 points/$1 through my cards Reward Program at Restaurants and then 3 additional points through the Dining Program for a total of 5 miles/$1 spent!
2. Shopping Portal: Like the Dining Program, the Shopping Portal is another opportunity to earn more points for things that you are already buying! This is almost identical to Step #2. These portals have hundreds of online retailers that you can shop through while earning anywhere from 1 to 10 additional miles. However , there are some deals with highly lucrative bonuses. Rule: You cannot use both this shopping portal and your credit card portal for the same transaction. You must compare the same retailers on both portals and use the best one.
Step Five: Transfer Your Points For the Best Value
Do not.. and I repeat.. DO NOT use your points for a statement credit, gift cards, shopping, etc. These are the best ways to get the lowest cents/point and the most counterproductive way to use your rewards if you plan on traveling. The best method is to transfer your points to the Airlines frequent flyer program. You can get more than 3X the cents/point by doing this.
Example: 30,000 Amex points Gift Card Maximum Value(.7 to 1cents/point)=$210 to $300. If you were to book a flight through transferring to the airlines, you would most likely receive anywhere from 1-3 cents/ mile which equals $300-900. However, it can range even higher for certain routes and airlines.
Step Six: Book Your Flight
The beautiful thing about transferring points is that there are so many options!!! You can search through many airline’s websites looking for the best price (in points) for a flight and then transfer the points to that Airline Frequent Flyer Program. You can shop for the same flight through other Partner Airline websites. Do an extensive search and find the best way to stretch your miles; it could save you hundreds of dollars.
Tip: I tend to get the best American Airlines flights by booking them through the British Airways portal because they use a distance-based flight chart. However, it will vary each different route that you take.
The Bottom Line
If you set up your card to collect the most points for your lifestyle, multiple your points with shopping portals and dining programs, and redeem your points through transferring your points to Airlines Frequent Flyer Programs, then you have done the most important thing which is to set up a highly functioning system. This sounds like a lot, but after you set this up you will see just how easy it is. Living with this maximization system will increase your rewards and set you up to travel a lot more frequently.
Go ahead, set up your own system and get the points to let you travel for free :) And let me know how it goes!
If you have any questions at, please feel free to write me :) I will get back to you as soon as possible! Please subscribe to this blog if you want to see more content on how to maximize your points and get the most from nothing.
