Sorry for the late update, but “meltdown” won’t be receiving updates for a bit! I’ve been dealing with some health issues that have hindered my ability to focus on editing: it’s why there was no new chapter last week. I’d like to return next week, but I can’t make any promises.

“Are you going to kill yourself?”

“Rin and Len!” Meiko looks happy when they both stop by. Kaito is already nursing a coffee and a paperback book, the spine worn away with age. His fingers are decorated with bandages. “Miku’s not here?” Kaito doesn’t look up yet; Meiko glares at him when she thinks Rin isn’t paying attention. “Is she doing okay?” “She’s busy.” Len sits next to Kaito and tries to peek at his book. “What are you reading?” Len is hiding it well, but Rin can see the notes in the margins of his notebook. “Miku’s not here?” Meiko echoes quietly to Rin. Before Meiko can make some comment about how Luka’s disappearance has been hard on them all—again—Rin nods; she’s tired of hearing about Luka and Miku. “She’s been distracted.” Meiko looks at Rin like she should say more. Rin stays quiet.

Miku tentatively smiles, and Rin thinks anything would be worth doing, just to see Miku’s smile.

Meiko and Kaito argue when they leave to grab a drink from the vending machine. Len presses his ear to the studio’s closed door while Miku and Rin trade a bottle of chilled tea back and forth. Their fingers brush when Miku hands her the bottle. “I miss Luka,” Miku quietly says. Her fingers are cold when Rin touches them. They don’t look at each other. Rin watches Len’s expression change as he tries to decipher Meiko and Kaito’s muffled voices. “I miss her too.” Rin is surprised to find herself agreeing.

A/N: I'm so excited to post chapter four! :) My beta reader who loves angst thinks it's, "great".

!! slight TW/CW for talk of suicide & depression !!

Chapter three! I was so excited to finally post this chapter—mostly because it means I post chapter four next week.

Rin and Len's family dynamic is based on mine! As a little fun fact, I used to be a very sleepy child: I used to be able to fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. My mom used to be worried that when I would take baths, I would fall asleep and drown. ♡ Now that I've gotten older, she's not worried about it. Len's mom, though is worried! I imagine that because she's their only parent, she's very close with the both of them. Len really only has Rin and his mom to confide in, so they both know about his depression—the sickness Rin refers to—and are both worried about it. Their mom is trying her best to be understanding about it, but she's not sure how much is too much: she's worried that she'll be overbearing, but that she's not doing enough for Len. All of this to say: the fourth section is about Len's mom and Rin worrying that Len is going to drown himself in the tub.

Len liking his coffee black is based on Vivid BAD SQUAD's Len.

Meiko's family cafe has room for everyone and ended becoming the hangout house, which means everyone has coffee preferences: Rin has the exact opposite taste of Len! She prefers her coffee sweet.

Gackpo was originally supposed to parallel Len with his illness, but instead he's is just sick—without any connotations or symbolism; however, he's still absent in order to put special emphasis on Gumi & Rin's relationship.

Miku was moping again. Rin could hardly stand another day.

Gumi’s hair was bright green and she wore a bright orange blazer to school. Rin could hardly believe they let Gumi dye her hair such a bright color: Rin could hardly believe Gumi pulled it off as well as she did. “It’s an international school,” Gumi had explained one day—as if it helped Rin understand anything. “They like to give the students lots of freedom.” If that was the case, then Rin supposed it was the perfect school for Gumi: Rin always had the impression that Gumi did what she wanted, when she wanted. She was a little more than an earthquake and a little less than a typhoon. Gumi seemed like she came from a dream—not real life.

A/N: Chapter three goes up on AO3 on February 26th, before 11:59 PM (UTC -8). I've been editing future chapters and I can't wait to release them and talk about them! I actually forgot what happens in chapter two since i was so absorbed with editing other chapters. ( 〃▽〃)

I loved writing Gumi; she is so full of life, and so fun! Rin is a bit down right now, so Gumi is a much-needed an injection of wonder and whimsy into her life. Gumi might be one of my favorites to write; I didn't have to agonize over if something was in character for Gumi, since she's very spontaneous and does, "what she want[s], when she want[s]".

I don't have many notes other than Gumi's introduction to the story; her and Gackpo's introduction are the focus of this chapter. Gackpo doesn't get much spotlight, unfortunately. In an earlier draft, when the chapters had Rin song titles, it was called "Invisible"—which is a pretty clear indicator Gackpo wasn't going to be the main focus. I had considered giving Gackpo a love interest, but scrapped the idea: I had floated a couple of ideas around, including KAITO, but I thought that if I considered Len & KAITO to be inappropriate—even though Len's crush was when they were much younger where just a year's difference feels really scandalous—then I would want to age up Gackpo; however, Gackpo and Gumi's in-school moments were really fun, and I didn't want to rewrite them or take it away from the fic. I think their relationship is important to Gumi's character—because, speaking honestly, Gackpo is very much an extension of Gumi here—and taking that away would remove an important piece of her.

If I had to pick another thing to write about, it would have to be KAITO and MEIKO; I adore writing their relationship. If you like my writing, maybe look forward to a KAITO and MEIKO focused fic in the future? ┬┴┬┴┤･ω･)

Also, the card game they're playing is Tycoon. I got really obsessed with the game while playing Persona 5 Royal.

“I wonder what Luka’s doing right now…” Rin thinks she has heard those words, in the same order, in the same tone, in the same tempo at least over one hundred times—and it’s not even noon: Miku is moping about Luka. “She hasn’t been gone that long,” Len—suddenly Rin’s favorite sibling—tells Miku. “You didn’t mope like this when Kaito and Meiko graduated.” Miku pouts; it’d be a cute look, if it weren’t for the reason behind it. “You moped when Kaito graduated! Shouldn’t you understand my pain the most?” Len flushes a bright red. “That’s not—!”
