New project I made with Kaori!
"Spirit chimeras" silkscreen print on a natural dyed cotton, an exhibition piece in collaboration with Kaori Pie for Grafische werkplaats, the Hague.
We are all different yet we share some similarities. We try to fit into certain groups but tend to differ from others. We try to place our differences and similarities into categories like ethnicity, upbringing, race or gender. To emphasise how different and yet how similar we all are, we created a universe of chimeras that all share certain body parts or patterns as well as have their own unique parts. They exist together and seem wildly different while still sharing something with one another. We are moving towards a society that is mixing influences and more and more, cultures are being intertwined and translated into other expressions. As we are reborn into new lives with different societal and cultural constructs, we can’t help but be influenced or inspired by what we see in other people from around the wold. Passion and the spirit in the human mind find these connections that draw us to each other to learn and to feel engaged in a broader mission than to find reasons to divide us into our differences. Here is the world where our creatures live, with their powers both shared as well as expressed in a different way.

Today my friend Snow introduced me to two taiwanese artists: Zito Hsu, and Chiao. We also visited Chiao’s studio! It was very exciting not only because we got to see a foreign artist’s space but also I found out that Chiao’s work is highly inspired by Taiwanese monsters and magical beings! This topic has been my interest for the past three years but so far I’ve been focusing on Slavic folklore beings and Japanese Yokai. Its super cool to find someone who can teach me a bit about Taiwanese spirits and monsters! We agreed to collaborate on a project about it, so hopefully after we’re back from Asia, I will have some time to start working on it.

Its been a week since me and Sam have arrived in Taiwan. This country is full of surprises! After visiting Japan every spring for the past five years and being completely in love, I didn’t expect to fall in love again. But somehow this beautiful country stole my heart just like Japan once did. Maybe Asia is just my place? I don’t know. Anyway, my impression of Taiwan is perfectly pictured in two photos above. How can one place equally be pure nature and a metropolis at once?
We are staying in Taipei but visited Jiufen, and Taroko National park with its breathtaking gorge, waterfalls and jungle. I will post some more photos of Taroko later.

Today, I wanted to share the result of a blind storytelling between me and my artist friend Olga. In this project, we kept exchanging images (created one at a time) as the only form of communication.
It turned out into a very personal project about friendship: both visually and spiritually, two very different characters with their own unique styles, thoughts and ideas coexist under one roof, bound in one book. They set off on an adventure to tell their story, a story from two different perspectives, yet a shared one.
I previously had a similar experience with my artist friend Samira, our story then was unrolling unexpectedly for both of us and the experience was full of surprises!
This time the dialogue was growing quite organically, both characters were just living their life it seemed.
You can read Olga’s experience here (in russian).

This year I attended Bologna Children’s Book Fair from day one. In comparison to the last year when I arrived in the afternoon of day two, it was a big improvement. I also had differently focused appointments, made some new artists/publishers friends, and didn’t get food poisoning (thank you universe!) = Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2017 was a success!
Last year I had a lot of meetings with all kinds of publishers I admire, it was my first fair and I wanted to use it to the maximum. This year I only focused on those publishers who I believed were a good match for my work, something I learned from the previous experience. Since I’m in search of a European literary/illustration agent, I also had a couple of meetings at the agents’ centre.
Of course one of the highlights of the fair is seeing the illustrator's exhibition. This year the artworks were arranged on tables (wouldn’t have been my choice for many reasons including bigger crowds, bad light reflection and general feeling of impracticality) but I still managed to take a good look at the artworks and took some pictures of my favourites. Unfortunately I forgot to write down the names of the authors (I’M REALLY SORRY :() The only author’s name I remember is Yara Kono (artwork with pink colour).
My friend Olya Ezova Denisova was part of the exhibition too! You can see her standing next to her work on the photo.
When I had some free time in between meetings, events and exploring the fair, I had a chance to meet up and chat with some new friends, illustrators and animators <3
This year I tried to tame my curiosity a bit and be more selective with what I spend my time on. I couldn't resist sticking around Asian pavilions since Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese books are my favourite as well as more rare to spot in European bookshops. Other than that I was only visiting the stands of the publishers I already knew and liked.
After two full days I was completely exhausted and overwhelmed with new thoughts and reflections but since I was staying in Bologna for two more days I decided to attend the fair for one more day.
Other then the fair I also visited some cultural events in town including the opening of the exhibition of the children’s author and illustrator Beatrice Alemagna and another one of Isabelle Arsenault both of whom I really admire.I also managed to get an autograph from Beatrice (last photo <3)
That’s about it. See you next year Bologna <3

Dear friends, I’m happy to post here about my new book that was published at the beginning of this month.
“My color is rainbow” is a children's picture book, written by Agnes Hsu, illustrated and designed by me. The artwork in this book was created manually in ink and assembled digitally.
"Follow Little White Arch on his journey as he wonders what his color could be. Along the way he meets many colorful characters who help him realize the answer. A playful story about kindness, acceptance, and openness that celebrates how we are not defined by one, but many wonderful characteristics."
If anyone is interested in buying this book directly from me, you can proceed to one of my shops etsy and big cartel. I have a very limited amount of books and they all will come signed by me (and can also include a special note if its a present).
Thank you for following along and supporting my projects :)
