The term ‘yuri’ has sort of become conventional when talking about lesbian or sapphic representation within media, which isn’t really a problem in itself, but I feel like I want for people to see that term as they saw the term yaoi, not recently, but you know what I mean & this sounds hypocritical obviously because of my blog name (which I don’t plan on changing any time soon) I just want this to serve as a reminder of the roots of that word, for example putting two minor females together and calling it ‘Yuri’ lightheartedly is fine, but the word itself does have sexual implications just like the word yaoi* **

*Just want to add- I’m pretty sure it’s more so derived from sexually explicit gl media- but If I’m wrong please feel free to correct me I wouldn’t want to spread misinformation, its entirely possible this is just a westernised concept of the word, I’m just speaking as having been a gay child with unrestricted internet access and having grown up around this stuff :))

I really want to hear others opinions about this !!

my initial doubts were correct! it is a westernized concept. i think this thought first came into my mind because of the drama a few years back where people were fighting over yaoi being mostly fetish content and that term was primarily used rather than 'shounen ai' (maybe because its shorter, i dont feel like going down that rabbit hole lol), & i remember having to avoid the 'yuri' tag when looking for girls love stories online lolol. the reason i made this post in the first place is because every time i used it among other lesbians or yuri enjoyers, i kind of felt like i was sending back our community by a few years😭 i am totally glad to be able to use it without feeling guilty!! thanks tumblr
