Curation is power
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to NOT participate in political discourse. It’s okay to mute. It’s okay to unfollow. Some may need a breather before getting back into the fight. Some are here to create a better world full of compassion and kindness and play. Some are simply trying to survive. It’s okay to curate your experience in whatever way supports you, because you matter —…

Hurricanes and firestorms
One of the most useful things my mother taught me is that, if I accept that the worst possible thing I could think of might happen, it becomes infinitely easier to deal with whatever does happen. One of the most useful things my eldest child taught me is that the first step when struggling with “but it shouldn’t be this way!” is accepting that yes, it is. When we shift from “It would be/is…

dead metaphors are really interesting honestly and specifically i’m interested in when they become malapropisms
like, the concept being, people are familiar with the phrase and what people use it to mean metaphorically, but it’s not common knowledge anymore what the metaphor was in literal reference to. people still say “toe the line” but don’t necessarily conjure up the image of people standing at the starting line of a race, forbidden from crossing over it. people still say “the cat is out of the bag” without necessarily knowing it’s a sailors’ expression referring to a whip being brought out for punishment. some metaphors are so dead we don’t even know where they come from; like, there are ideas about what “by hook or by crook” references, but no one is entirely sure. nobody knows what the whole nine yards are.
and then you throw in a malaprop or a mondegreen or two, where because people don’t know what the actual words of the expression refer to, they’re liable to replace them with similar sounding words (see “lack toast and tolerant”). so we can literally go from a phrase referencing a common, everyday part of life to a set of unfixed, contextless sounds with a completely different meaning. that’s fascinating. what an interesting piece of the way language and culture are living, changing, coevolving things.
maybe part of the reason we can’t figure out where some phrases come from is that over time the words themselves have changed! one of the theories about “the whole nine yards” is that it’s a variant of “the whole ball of wax,” which some people further theorize was originally “the whole bailiwick,” meaning just “the whole area”! the addition of “nine yards” might be related to “dressed to the nines,” which might reference the fucking Greek muses! language is so weird and cool! (and I only know any idioms in two languages!)
the point is. I just came across the words “nip it in the butt” in a piece of published, professional fiction, and now I can’t stop giggling.

Many ages ago Death was defeated and sealed. Immortality is the norm, but the loss of death has lead to a society of ultralites that rule over never dying slaves. As Death’s first reaper after the unsealing, you are here to remind them why Death exists… and why your master should be feared.

AO3 Tagging Inspiration.
Mainly a reference for me bc I always blank when it comes to tags. Sharing in case it helps anyone else, but not intended to be prescriptive. Further references:
Ao3’s Rating System Explanation
Difference Between "A/B" and "A&B"
Fanwork Ao3 Accepts Beyond Fanfic
How tagging a pairing in the “Relationship” field vs in “Additional Tags” changes search results
List of Writing Genres
Trope Examples
Most Popular Tags on Ao3
My humble plea for people to cross-post their meta & other fannish nonfiction to ao3, and tag it with “meta analysis” so I can find it and adore it

You don’t own fanfics. They’re inherently public domain because they aren’t your IP. Agree or disagree with AI, there are no grounds for “protection” from AI because it isn’t your IP to begin with. That’s what you chose when you chose this medium
Oh dear.
Okay, you get an answer, because at least you took the effort to write your ask out properly, even if you are hiding behind the grey, sunglassed circle.
Do I, or any fanfic author for that matter, have any legal claims to our work? No, not really, no. (Although if someone took a fic, filed off the serial number--deleted the fandom specific elements--, and then had it published for financial gain, yeah, that would be a case.)
BUT
Fandoms are built on a social contract that says we respect each others work, the effort people put into their art. We don't steal or disrespect the work of our peers. By feeding people's fanworks to AI you both steal and disprect it, and we need to make people realize that before it's too late--before fandom falls apart, because there will be no more real, actual fanworks.
Disrepectfully,
Orlissa
(i can't believe I have to say this)

bc you can never have enough fic recs
Fic Recs
I have an absurd number of Ao3 bookmarks. All BNHA. And while I do (very occasionally) get rid of some, the rate at which I add them is far greater. But where’s the fun in keeping them all to myself??? I think I’m going to start doing a series of fic rec posts to share some of the joy. Maybe once every week or two? I’m thinking some thematic, some by ship, some by character... Not even 100% sure. This is just a post to hook them all to because organization is a thing.

On the morning of the knife fight I was scheduled to lose, I washed myself in the ritual soap and dressed in soft, loose fitting clothes as was the custom. I would not break my fast until after the deed was done.
My second ferried me to the entry point at the North, where I declared my secret name to the gatekeeper and several acolytes in quick succession. They prepared me for the inner sanctum, infusing my veins with salt water and drawing intricate sigils on my chest. I bid farewell to my second, who would keep vigil outside. I remember very little after this, but when I awoke, I felt a great weight had been lifted from my chest.

Anyway, the top surgery yesterday went great!

I'd take this one step further: Life is hard enough. Don't add to the negativity in the world by being mean.
I cannot relate to ppl who see someone who’s incredibly fixated on one thing that gives them joy, and treat that as pathetic.
Like, if some dude who lives alone, has a job he hates, and only finds joy in his dog, spends all his money on dog toys and food, pampers the shit out of that dog, treats that dog like his child, I don’t see that as sad. He has something that he really cares about despite having things about his life he doesn’t like, and you know that dog is going to have a good life.
If someone is going to a school they hate, they don’t like the people they hang out with, they feel like there’s no joy in life except that they get to play minecraft when they get home, far be it from me to call that pathetic or lazy of them.
If some teenage boy is getting bullied, his parents are getting divorced, he can’t find a reason to make it though the day except to watch anime, good for him. I’m glad he found something he can enjoy.
If some girl has self-esteem issues, feels like she’s not good at anything, has no friends, but gets excited whenever she saves up enough money to buy supplies for a cosplay or go to a con, that’s amazing and I support her
If someone can only find joy in one, tiny thing, why would you make them feel pathetic for relying on that one thing to get through the day just bc you don’t get it or think it’s silly?
Even if someone has a good life but gets joy out of something you think is silly, there is absolutely no reason for you to treat their interests as pathetic.
(Tagging this with stuff like ‘cringe‘ and ‘cringe culture’ cus the ppl who use those tags need to see this the most)

real, genuine question
When you, a reader, leave comments on a fic, do you expect the author to reply? If “expect” is perhaps the wrong word… do you enjoy it when they do? Am I going overboard by replying to everybody who comments on my stuff and making them all uncomfortable?
I have been out of fandom for a minute and don’t know the current etiquette.
… surely it’s not just that I’m overthinking this. Surely not. I have never in my life.

If you are a white kid with a positive relationship (as in they are not abusing you and generally like you as a kid and want you to like them) with a casually racist family member have you considered guilt tripping them? It's been a highly effective tactic with my grampa. When he used to pop off with shit I wouldn't give him a dissertation like my mom and uncle did bcus he'd just dig in his heels and argue. Instead, I found a well placed "wow :( no it's fine I just like idk. I didn't know you were like that :(((( " worked WONDERS. If you want to deradicalize people, don't focus on writing essays for random trolls online. Just make your racist family feel bad for being racist. You might even be able to sneak some idk facts and logic into them after you've been doing that consistently while hanging out.
