I was watching tnbc last week (YES I WATCHED IT IN JUNE LEAVE ME ALONE) and in that final scene when Jack and the others came back from killing Oogie was when I saw someone in the gate and I was like excuse me WHO'S THAT???? I've been literally watching this movie twice every year my whole life and that was the FIRST TIME I SAW HIM??
You Know Who Else I Want to Talk About?
The gatekeeper from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Definitely one of the most forgotten characters in the NBC universe. His role was shoved away in Oogieās Revenge, given to the Clown with the Tear-Away Face for no real reason, and was never mentioned or seen in the Kingdom Hearts series and The Pumpkin King. All weāve got are a few snippets of him in the movie, but thatās it.
So, from what I can see, heās a raven/crow(presumably male, but I donāt know for sure) that wears a trench coat and hat with gloves, often covered up. When working, heās in a small shack with a diamond-shaped opening thatās right beside the gate. Thereās a sign that says, āGATEKEEPERā, and thereās a skull right beside it. It gets decorated with orange Christmas lights later on in the movie.
Heās in charge of the gate that leads into Halloween Town, and is addressed by Jack Skellington 2-3 times in the movie by him either nodding his skull in his direction or even saluting him(a āthank youā, most likely). Judging by the gear that works the gate, Iām guessing that it needs someone to lift and close it when needed. And, obviously, you need someone in charge of it to make sure Oogie Boogie and no other baddies are coming into town. So thatās where the Gatekeeper comes in. Heās pretty useful.
Itās clear that he recognizes The Pumpkin King, and Jack seems to be acquainted with him, as thereās a mutual respect shared between them. So heās definitely working with the Town. Itās too bad we donāt get insight on him in the movie. He didnāt deserve to get shoved out of the way in Oogieās Revenge, though. I guess itās just more proof to us that the game didnāt take much canon into account. Smh.
We donāt get to see him in the Town Meeting or around Halloween Town. My guess is that heās working a lot, monitoring the gate at all times. The only exception I have seen is that the Crow/Raven leaves during the This Is Halloween song, which explains his absence and why you can see him in the crowd after Jack comes out from the fountain. The guyās got some Halloween spirit!
We also donāt see The Gatekeeper at the end of the movie, when Sally climbs through the gate to leave to the Spiral Hill. He probably left to play in the snow like the other citizens. But, other than that, heās always there. It seems like heāsĀ working early in the morning and late at night. Maybe thatās why heās bundled up all the time.

You may have been forgotten in every piece of media, but I wonāt ever forget you, Gatekeeper of Halloween Town. May you do a better job than the Clown With a Tear-Away Face ever did.

I cannot stop thinking about Episode 5 of TADC because Ragatha is, however unintentionally, one of the best examples of how isolating and difficult it is to interact with the world as an autistic person I have ever seen. To the point it genuinely makes me sad to think about her. I need to make a post expanding on this at some point but rn just. The way everyone assumes thereās some sinister hidden meaning to everything she does and says but sheās literally just trying to be nice and she doesnāt understand why itās not working. The way she tries so hard to make connections but it constantly falls flat, she says things that hurt without realising how or why. She follows the rules sheās been taught will make her friends ā sheās kind, sheās forgiving, sheās accepting and apologetic when she messes up, but for some reason itās just not working. She tries to mimic other people, she tries to laugh at past experiences, tries to open up about her past like everyone else is doing, but now everyoneās uncomfortable and looking at her like sheās crazy and she doesnāt get it!! She doesnāt get it!!! Jax is a jerk and heās mean to everyone but for some reason Pomni likes him and she doesnāt get it, she doesnāt understand! Pomni tells her itās okay to be a jerk sometimes but Ragatha doesnāt like being mean, she wants to be nice to people, but she does it anyway, she gets mean like Jax and Zooble do but now Pomniās looking at her like sheās done something wrong but she just did what she asked her to!! She doesnāt get it!! At the end of the episode everyone goes off into their groups and Ragatha is left alone, after having tried so hard to make friends and fit in and make people like her, sheās still alone, and everyone thinks sheās weird and unapproachable and she just has to give up and accept that she is inherently unloveable. Her evil alter ego tells her sheās going to die alone and nobody loves her and the only thing she corrects her on is the fact that they canāt die here. The few that might like her when sheās around donāt miss her when sheās gone, because thereās nothing to miss. Ragatha has spent her whole life systematically stripping away everything that makes her different and unlikeable in order to make herself more palatable to others, and in the process she has made herself a personalitiless blank slate with no unique identity for others to latch onto and appreciate. She has nothing to add to any conversation because sheās too afraid of being disliked to have a memorable personality beyond being generally polite and nice. And just. God. Someone get this girl some noise cancelling headphones and a therapist on speed dial, being this good of a representation of what itās like to be autistic, especially to be an autistic person with trauma, is not good for the soul. That final shot just destroys me right in the heart. My poor girl.
