look at the ocean just look at its rippling surface the cold currents underneath, barely unseen jutting gray triangles coming to breathe (it’s a detached sort of beauty) you used to think you could dive beneath the waves fly like a gull marvel at coral jewels with slippery wings at your shoulder blades (but now you know) you can still dive beneath the waves but you sink like an anchor weep at the bleached nothingness wounds pluming red in lieu of wings (freedom is a fading concept) they drag you up above above the limpidness you call home seaweed jaws sinking into your armored back they cut away your wings (how could you not grieve?) when they finally give you back to the sea you can’t fly you can’t breathe and all you can see is crimson darkness smiling in the distance it consumes you. (you don’t resist.) (you can’t.) /// finning
