SPOILERS FOR JACOBS LADDER - 1990
TW: PTSD/C-PTSD, DEREALIZATION/SURREALISM I just watched "Jacobs Ladder" last night, (my brain has finally had a moment to process it after weeping like a bitch for the second half of the entire movie.) (here's the yap I wrote last night to oomf directly after watching so excuse the rambling.) "i have absolutely no words for this movie (positive). the emotions im feeling right now cannot be described with words. nothing was real, none of it was, he never even made it out of the war. everything that happened in the movie was his mind creating another life in response to dying, (i didn't even remember this phenomenon when watching this movie nor did i see any of the signs so it threw me for a massive fucking loop). the reason "jezzie" was so bothered by him looking back at the life he had with his wife sarah (despite him not talking about it) was because she wasn't real. he was looking back on it because it was the actual reality he lived before going to war, he remembered his children, his love for his wife, even in death. the lady on the stairs telling him he was dead was real, the doctor telling him he was dead was real, (in the way that he recognized he was dying like a person in a dream telling you things only you know.) everything he saw, the sound effects i only remembered after the twist at the end was him in the helicopter after being gutted, (The "car" explosions, the random helicopter sfx, the way the "flashbacks" set up a story of him being loaded into a helicopter and making it to the camp hospital.)"
I think the reason I had such an emotion reaction to Jacobs Ladder was because it's raw and violent portrayal of post-traumatic stress struck such a deep, familiar cord within me. Little do we see in the media much more than "we aren't supposed to make loud noises around [blank]," or "[blank] just wasn't the same after [event]". In JL the frustration and fear people who have post-traumatic stress experience from their peers is in full technicolor. Being told to "stop making things something they aren't" or that they're "tired of crazies" is incredibly real. People generally aren't as sympathetic towards people who deal with PTSD/C-PTSD as is portrayed in many movies and shows. Also, the idea that one may have simply not survived a traumatic experience, that your day to day life isn't real in the slightest is something I tend to resonate with. (derealization a bitch) The deep-seated fear of death, (more so surviving again in even more pain than before) is very real. The fear of anything and everything, the constant crippling anxiety and stress molding itself into moments of anger and violence is very real, and the response from your peers is as well. Sorry for the rambling (and probably poorly worded rambling at that). I hope I was able to get through what I mean LMAO 😭😭😭😭 anyway this movie is an utter 10/10, no argument bro. also if u want a watch link just dm me lol (I <3 piracy, you'll never catch me paying 4 a movie)
