Sleeping Coeurl Special Interview: Zahra Kouris
Hello once again my dear readers! Last time I came to you with an exclusive from the Kouris family’s heir, where she addressed some lingering rumors and touched a bit more on the rehousing project she mentioned at the Little Ladies Day Promenade and Social in Eorzea.
It’s been a few moons since and Zahra has been busy! The rehousing project is still underway, but while that’s going, she’s been participating in Menphina’s Madness, running her own venue, preparing for her annual event, Rookie Rhapsody, and helping to run her house! That’s a lot for a woman who hasn’t even hit twenty turns. Still, despite everything on her plate (and more!), she still wasn’t too busy to sit down with us here at the Coeurl and answer some of our questions. We wanted to dig a bit deeper into some of the answers we received last time, and learn some new things besides!
SC: Zahra! Thank you so much for joining us today. We’re honored to have you with us.
Z: Thank you for having me. It’s nice to be able to sit down and set some records straight!
SC: I’m glad to hear it! Well, I do know you’re busy, so we’ll get right to it. First thing’s first, you opened your venue, a Hannish venue, in Eorzea. What was your reasoning behind that and do you have plans to open a venue in Thavnair?
Z: This is a very good question, thank you for asking! I opened my venue in Eorzea because I wanted to bring a bit of my culture to an area that’s become a second home to me. I think the best compliment I’ve gotten so far is ‘This place is too bright!’ That’s how I know I’ve done it right.
Right now, I don’t have any plans of opening an Ameya in Thavnair. There are plenty of dance halls and venues there and on top of that, I have a lot of other businesses under the Kouris name to oversee in Thavnair that take up my time when I’m not managing Ameya.
SC: Yes, I’m sure people will understand. And of course, we’re all happy to spend gil at one of the Kouris family’s lovely establishments! Your jewelry products are second to none. But with that said, that does lead me into a tough question. There are rumors going around about your father being ill, among other things surrounding you becoming heir. Would you be so kind as to shed some light on this?
Z: I knew this question would come up eventually, so I am glad you asked. Anyone that knows of our family knows that we come from humble origins. My father grew up in mines, I grew up helping my father and learning the trade. To this day, my father assists the workers in the mines. Not too long ago, he came down with an illness that’s very common among miner workers. It’s treatable of course, but it does require a lot of bedrest. We didn’t want to worry anyone, especially investors or shareholders, so my mother and myself took over operations while he’s been in recovery. However, enough time has passed that we can discuss this with the public, as things have been running smoothly even during my father’s absence. But he is on the road to recovery, and we hope to see him fully back on his feet in the next few moons.
SC: I’m sorry to hear about your father! That certainly explains why the house kept everything so secretive! We’re happy to hear your father will be well soon. Now then, you did tell us a bit about your rehousing project in Thavnair for the Ilsabardan refugees. Do you have any further information on that, such as when that project may be finalized?
Z: In a moon or so we’ll be clearing out the area of dangerous monsters. That’ll allow the builders to go in and start with construction. Once we have some basic lodgings set up we’ll be able to accept refugees to come in!
SC: That’s wonderful news! It sounds like everything is just about ready to go. We’ll be waiting to see how things progress. Now then, for our next question. Earlier this turn, there was a lot of talk and controversy regarding rumors of you being engaged, and now we’ve heard rumors about a potential paramour who wrote a ballad dedication to you and your establishment. I know you’ve mentioned you wanted to keep your private life that, but we were hoping you’d shed a little bit of light on that for us.
Z: Ah yes. I know the love life of nobility is a hot topic, and not one I can avoid forever, in retrospect. I was never engaged, there was a misunderstanding when that other publication published that ad. To clarify, now that I was of age, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take over as heir. After all, as many may know, I am adopted. I wasn’t sure if I’d be accepted by our people. So my father proposed that within a year if I hadn’t decided what I wanted to do with my life, he would make arrangements for me to become heir, and that would include prospective marriage partners to help secure my future.
Of course, word got out and the publication was made. We couldn’t refute it as it technically wasn’t false, but we hadn’t expected the Al-Bakir house to take an interest, either. One of their sons was a long standing fan of my music, it seems.
But as you know from the last article, we’ve settled things amicably. As for this ‘paramour’, that’s simply untrue. I did a dedication show, and a fan, an associate even, decided to do his dedication to my venue. It was an honor, and I appreciated that he took the time to do something like that for us. Everyone at Ameya works hard to bring something to everyone, and I’m pleased that we’re bringing joy to someone.
But I want to be clear and firm, I do have someone I am in a relationship with. His name is Yasuhiro Kowareta, but please call him Jasper. I am very happy with him, and my family approves of him. We have been together for several moons now, and we’ve been good friends for turns now besides.
SC: Are you two engaged?
Z: I have only just come of age, and my life is hectic. This turn I had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of Thavnair’s team for blitzball, and I want to make sure I keep in shape for next turn, as I’d love to try and be a part of the team again. I have plenty of events at Ameya to keep me going, I have the rehousing project, and I have my duties as heir.
I currently have no plans to get married or get engaged right now, but I wouldn’t be opposed to the thought in the distant future. I care about him and I trust him completely. He is my confidant and I like to think he can rely on me too. I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have at my side!
SC: Speaking of blitzball, can you offer us a few words regarding being a part of the Thavnair team this turn?
Z: I love the Sea Chocobos and I’m so glad I was able to be a part of them last turn. They’re an amazing team and I was excited to see some of my old teammates back in action. With that being said, my heart has always belonged to Thavnair and I was honored and excited to be a part of the Immortal Lions team. There’s a unique energy and vibe that draws you in, and while we were eliminated, we still persisted and kept that energy up. You’ll see just how much when we dominate during Space Jam!
I definitely want to aim for the Lions next turn, and we’re going to make it to the top!
SC: Thank you so much Zahra, we appreciate you coming here and opening up to us!

Gathering Information
“What brings the son of my former employer to my abode?” tall, dark skinned hyur was standing in a small inn room in Gridania. Before him was a stove and in his hands was a kettle he’d just picked up. With smooth, easy steps he crossed the room towards a small table where a tea set had been laid out, along with one rice dish.
He didn’t seem at all disturbed by the hooded figure that just walked in unannounced. Instead, he poured hot water into the teapot and then went to go grab another cup.
“There aren’t many reasons I would come here,” the hooded figure lifted the veil, revealing a young miqo’te. Ivory scales replaced facial markings, traveling down his neck to disappear into the fabric. His blue eyes took in the room and the figure who had returned with a second tea cup. “Although I see you’ve decided to remain here in Eorzea.”
The boy’s inquiry earned him a simple shrug before the hyur gestured for him to sit. “If you are concerned that I am touching base with Sahrin regarding Zahra-”
“I genuinely do not care what you do regarding that man.” the boy held up his hand to decline the offer. “I’m not here to check on if you’re fulfilling your part of the bargain. That’s between you and Hara. I am curious as to why you’re still here, and not back in Radz-at-Han. Assignment?”
“I see.” the scent of chai began to fill the area as the tea steeped and he poured himself a cup and sat down. Cold eyes glanced over at the boy. “It was determined my skills would be better served here for the troupe.”
A small smirk crossed the boy’s lips as he decided to take a seat across from the older man after all. He placed his elbows on the table and rested his chin on his hands. “You mean they want you to continue spying.”
“I am an observer, Lord Cahil.” was the simple reply.
“It works in my favor regardless.” Cahil shrugged and leaned back in his seat. He gave Fitaan a smile. “It means I came to the right place for information.” his gaze suddenly hardened. “Sai. Tell me what you know. We lost track of her after she was taken to Doma, but I know she’s here.”
“Sai?” Fitaan raised his dark brows and took a sip of his tea. “Is this about the article? You believe she is behind it.”
“Those, yes, and the threatening letters Hara’s been getting.” the articles in question were vague submissions to local papers that complained about those in high society, although of late they’d taken on a distinct tone regarding foreign affairs. They were passive-aggressive enough that anyone who knew of Zahra’s declaration about the rehousing project would pick up on it, but otherwise, it just sounded like someone ranting nonsensically about something that had nothing to do with Eorzeans.
Fitaan did not immediately respond, taking another sip of his tea. “....She was in contact with Sahrin a moon ago, but the discussion was brief. I have not heard anything from her, although that is to be expected.” he glanced over at Cahil. “It would seem the Kouris family’s ability to know the inner workings of the underground is limited in Eorzea. Do you not have spies supplanted here that can collect this information for you?”
“I have you.”
Fitaan chuckled lightly at that, setting his tea cup down. “Sai is elusive and good at hiding her tracks. It would take me considerable time to track her down.” he stroked his chin. “I will do what I do best, and you shall have your information. I do not wish to see Zahra harmed. Sahrin is currently in Ala Mhigo, so that would be the last location I know of for her. Being as it was a moon ago, I doubt she remained. Their discussion did not end pleasantly.”
Cahil tsked, clearly disappointed Fitaan did not have what he’d been hoping for. He let out a sigh and stood up. “I’ll go visit Sahrin then. It’ll probably be another dead end, but it’s better than nothing. I’m curious to know why she went to him after trying to set him up.”
“I have never understood that woman’s mind.” Fitaan says slowly. “Her skill in presenting herself as something she was not was impressive. Come again in a moon. I will have more for you then.”
Cahil placed his hood back on and headed for the door.
“By the way, how long are you going to keep hiding from your sister?” Fitaan’s gentle voice had Cahil’s hand halting at the doorknob. “Once she takes over, she will discover the truth. Is it not better to tell her now and pool your resources?”
For a few moments, Cahil did not move, his back facing Fitaan. When he finally turned, a brilliant smile lit his features.
“I’d appreciate it if well meaning, meddlesome flies would stop buzzing at me regarding how I handle my family’s affairs.” he said cheerfully and walked out, ignoring Fitaan’s knowing smile.

Zahra’s Notes
I told Cahil about the fish incident and he says I’m unbelievably petty.
I don’t want to hear that from him! He’s worse than me!
“You realize, he is going to retaliate.”
Sure, that’s fine, but if he does, I can just dangle Cahil’s love for Babohan Sith that’s become almost an obsession as a peace offering to use as he sees fit.
Not at all inspired because he looked at my diary.

Dear Diary 51
I’ve been neglecting this poor thing, mostly just because I’ve been so tired.
There’s a lot of work to be done, and no end to the amount of paperwork I need to do. Mother and Cahil keep saying I need to hire someone to help me, but I think it’ll be okay. I just need to get used to the workload and maintain a better sleep schedule.
I’m really embarrassed by my behavior during our blitzball game, but no one has commented on it yet. I vaguely remember most of it, and it was all me acting like a jerk or just running around like a maniac. I did manage to get some sleep after, but I was so behind on my work by the time I woke up that I’m not sure if it was worth it.
In any case, the zoning inspectors finally gave their approval, but I have a few other inspectors that need to check out things like the water, soil and the local mine. Because it’s been so long, they’ll need to know if that area is still safe for people to work. I’m also fighting contractors for rights to build homes and businesses. The contractors I wanted are busy dealing with other projects and the others that I’m not as fond of won’t stop hounding me to hire them.
But I have a budget, as much as it seems I don’t, and I feel they’re not wanting to take me seriously because I’m just the heir of the house and I’m so young. Father has been very hands off about everything unless I specifically ask him for advice. Sometimes I feel like he’s testing me to see how I handle myself as a leader.
Mother keeps commenting that I’ve lost weight and Pasha tries to have more food sent to me during the day whenever I’m home. They’re not wrong, I have lost almost 10 ponze, but I haven’t had much of an appetite. There’s always something to do, but caffeine is a blessing. I will subsist on coffee.
I think after this moon I will try and get back into performing regularly. As impossible as that seems with my schedule, I want to get out more. I love my venue, but being stuck in its office or at my space at my place buried in paperwork isn’t really a relaxing time.
I got to go to Hanami again this turn, I dressed up as a geisha! It was nice to go around and enjoy things. I ran into Tamala and Minoru (maybe on a date? They’re so cute) and when Minoru offered us some mochi, Ms Kita gave a cold denial and walked away. A part of me feels like I should have gone and spoken to her, but I was worried maybe I had offended her somehow. I didn’t introduce her to Tamala, after all. Maybe she found my lack of manners rude. Minoru and Tamala were unsure too. I’ll try to apologize next time I see her.
Since almost everyone was there, I didn’t buy gifts for anyone really, ah. Well, I did get two for Jasper because I thought he’d like them. Originally, I was just going to stick with the mask, but after seeing the tea plush at Kappa-Chino, I had to have it. Minoru paid for everyone’s plushies, so technically it’s a gift from both of us, but I’ll try and get Minoru something nice in thanks.
Speaking of Jasper, he sent me a beautiful gift after I sent him the plushie. It’s a red lotus carved in carnelian. Carnelian has a few different meanings, but outside of that it’s just beautiful. It doesn’t look like he got this from the festival, I’m pretty sure he carved this himself. Anyway, it’s now one of my most precious items! ♥ I’m definitely not going to show it off when I return home.
The tabloids back home have stopped asking about us, which I’m grateful for. I’d like to stay out of the spotlight. However, due to the gossip the house has had an influx of people wanting to work for us. And more than a few have been asking about the rehousing project.
Maybe I will take mother and Cahil’s advice and hire someone to help me with all this. But I’d rather they be someone knowledgeable about these things, rather than just a secretary. I’ll...look more into it.
I wish I had better news to write about father, but I’m honestly really worried. He’s not getting worse, I don’t think, but he’s not getting better, either. When I’d go home, he would usually invite me into his room/study to talk. Lately when I’ve returned he’s been too tired. The cooks have changed up his diet a few times, but he’s eating less, too. I hope the healers can figure out a way to get him better.
This is getting long, so I’ll end it here although there’s so much more that’s happened I could talk about. Like the summer festival I was invited to perform at, or my talk with Zhao, or my plans for Ameya. Maybe next time.

Projecting
Whenever Zahra returned to Thavnair, she first visited her parents before settling in to do any business. Her father, due to his illness, could be found in the north wing of the estate, where their rooms were. He had also had his office moved there, so he could handle important paperwork. Zahra and her mother were handling meetings for now. She usually visited her father first to check in on what she’d missed while in Eorzea and to start preparing for the slew of meetings that she’d have to attend.
Her mother was usually either traveling Thavnair for research purposes, at The Great Work, at the work shop in Radz-at-Han proper, or at her workshop in their estate. Basically, she was always working. This time, she was in her workshop at their estate, doing research. On what in particular, Zahra wasn’t sure on. Her mother typically worked on a few different projects when she wasn’t helping with estate affairs.
The workshop was a tidy mess. There were stacks of books and reagents, but everything was sorted and organized along the walls and shelves even as they spilled out in a haphazard fashion. The red and gold walls were lined with family and scenic paintings just as much as it had rare alchemical specimens that had been preserved and framed.
She found the older raen hunched over paperwork, back facing Zahra, pouring over alchemical notes. Zahra attempted to slip in quietly so as not to disturb, but the moment she entered the room fully, the quill stopped moving.
“You are staying for a few suns this time, Hara?” the quill resumed its pace after Zahra let out a small, startled breath. She was sure she’d been absolutely silent this time. Mothers had a supernatural sense.
“It’s Blitzball season and I’m playing in the majors, so I’ll be home a little less often. I’ll try to be home for the most important meetings.” she moved to stand beside her mother, dropping down to give her a side hug. “Have you rested, mama?”
“I will be well, it is the parent’s job to worry over their child, not the other way around.” she straightens her back to lightly return the hug before waving Zahra’s worries off. “Speaking of, you are taking on a lot, Hara. The estate’s affairs, blitzball, your business, the relocation project. These are not small feats you are trying to accomplish.” Theria raised a hand to press it against her daughter’s cheek. “Have you been resting? Eating well? You’ve lost weight again.”
“J-just a few ponze!” she had leaned into her mother’s touch until the commentary about her weight. Zahra pulled away, wrapping her arms around her stomach. “I eat plenty! Anyway Mama, look at the glasses you sent me!” she adjusted the stylish glasses on the bridge of her nose. “It’s been really helpful with the headaches!”
Leaning back on her red cushioned chair, Theria gave her daughter a warm smile. “Glad I am to hear it, Hara. Of course, the medicine would have continued to help you, but I think the glasses are a better choice in the long run for helping you with your sight. I can’t see what you see, but I know Eorzea is an aether-rich land. Having to go back and forth from there to here must have been a strain.”
“It’s been great!” she beamed at her mother. “Before, my eyes would feel strained or I’d get headaches for a few days or a week before I’d adjust. I eventually just dealt with it, but now it’s not like that at all! I can go back and forth with no problems.” she paused, her gaze shifting to her sleeves. “Y-you know...the idea for the glasses...it was actually uh...”
As Zahra began to stammer and fidget, Theria let out a long sigh. “Hara.” she waited for Zahra to look over at her before fully turning to face her. She raised her hands up. “I am not angry with him.”
Surprised, Zahra reached out and took her mother’s hands in hers. “You’re not? Father said you were.”
Theria rolled her eyes. “I am old, but I am not completely out of touch. It’s more that he...reminded me of me. And perhaps that...annoyed me, being on the receiving end as the parent. It will be hard for you to understand this, Hara, as you have no children of your own, and you did not grow up in an environment lacking warmth or affection...but to keep it simple, I detest the idea that I could be like my parents in any way.” she gave Zahra’s hands a gentle squeeze. “And for a moment, that young man made me feel like how my mother must have felt, when I told her I was going to follow my heart and do as I pleased. Her approval was desired, but absolutely not a requirement to my happiness. And at the time, I held no expectations for it, either, such was - is - our relationship.”
“Oh...” she leaned forward and Theria smiled, letting go of Zahra’s hand to run it through her hair. “So, you did feel put out?”
Theria hummed. “I feel I have been a good mother to you, so I think...I may have have felt challenged on that regard.” she smiles ruefully. “But after your father spoke with me, I realized I may have projected a bit. Again, it is not a good feeling to realize you are now on the other side of the fence. It brings complicated feelings. If you two eventually wed and raise children, you may understand.”
Zahra began to fidget uncomfortably. “Uh...well...”
At that, Theria laughed and pulled her daughter down to press a kiss on her forehead. “That is a fine response for now. You are still young. Your father can wait a few more cycles.” she moves to stand. “Well then, I suppose I should get something started for dinner. It looks like if I do not try and manage your diet a bit, you’ll disappear.”
“I’m eating! A lot!”
“And we’ll set a curfew for you because I am sure you’re also not sleeping properly.”
“Mama!”
Theria started walking out of the workshop. “I’ll inform Pasha, Sisters knows if I leave it to anyone else they’ll cave into your wiles.”
“Mother, listen to me! I am eating! A lot!”
“Oh? But not sleeping?” at the pause she nodded. “I thought as much, you can’t lie to your mother. Come now, I’ll draft up a proper schedule for you while you’re here, since I know you’ll keep to whatever bad habits you’ve been up to. You are like your father in that respect. Don’t click your tongue, Hara, I wouldn’t have to do this if you’d take better care of yourself.”
“....Yes, mama.”

Dear Diary 50
Ah, this book is halfway full! I might have to look at buying a new one soon.
Blitzball season has started and I’m excited! The opening ceremony was as grand as I remember, I was running around with my team and as a cheerleader. Being both a Madness Cheerleader is a busy experience, but I like it.
I haven’t heard from the stalker, but considering father decided it was time to make a move, it means decisions were made based on whatever it was they found. He decided to officially decline all marriage offers and sent out apology letters to all the families who inquired, including the Al-Bakir family. So I no longer have to worry about a spontaneous fiancé coming into my life.
He pulled in a reporter that’s friendly to the family and I went in and did an interview after the Promenade. We couldn’t directly deny something we didn’t actually do (the tabloid), but we could twist the situation so that it ultimately didn’t hurt us now or later.
It wasn’t something I was all that happy about, since it meant I did have to reveal some personal information - but father gave me a lopsided smile and told me that sadly, things like this were going to happen in my position.
Sometimes I can’t help but get nervous, it’s seems there’s always some underlying tension.
But! The luncheon and promenade were fun. A lot of friends were there and I got to talk a bit more with Penelope and East. Those two have a hilarious dynamic, I wasn’t aware they knew each other so well. But I suppose them both being ridiculously rich and from Ul’dah it only makes sense. Ah, East sent me a contract for holding an event and they want to utilize Ameya for some of their festivities. It looks like a rather large event. I’ll have to get with the staff and see if they’d like to lend a hand. I’ve already sent over the response, I think it’ll be good publicity for the hall.
But back to the luncheon. I made my plans for the future known there in a public statement. I know I still have to get the kinks worked out, but I felt it was important that it was publicly known the land would be open for the refugees. I’m not sure if that was what Quin wanted, but I figured it’d be easier to spread the word this way.
I haven’t really done high society social functions like that in Thavnair, but it’s not totally different, from my understanding. We do a lot more partying once the stuffy formal stuff is out of the way though. Our festivals and weddings also tend to last for days.
The Promenade was also a lot of fun. We were all being ushered around but I still got to mingle a bit and dance with a few people. Pierce was ridiculous as always, but he still manages to make me laugh. He was talking about visiting my family with Jasper and I joked that if he could manage that, I’d let him come along.
There was talk about etiquette. Dancing and obtaining family permission. Scorpius mentioned he had obtained permission to escort Eiden to the promenade and I guess Jasper realized he’d never officially asked my parents for permission to do...anything? I never really thought it was something necessary for him to do, but he asked, so I told him if he really thought he should, he could. My father already likes him, so it wasn’t like he’d say no.
I’m not sure what he wrote to my parents, but my father pearled me early in the morning laughing, saying ‘Your boyfriend has some solid stones on him! Tell him to come to Radz-at-Han and have dinner with us! I’ll have your mother won over by then!’
And that was it. That’s all he said.
I guess Jasper upset mother with his letter. From what he said, he pretty much said that he hoped for their permission to court me, but so long as we both wanted to make things work, their permission was ultimately unnecessary.
I’ll have to sit down with her and explain why he probably said it the way he did. My mother is pragmatic most of the time, but I think, without realizing, he may have hurt her feelings and made her feel like he didn’t care about what she thought one way or another. Which isn’t true!
I know dad thinks this is funny...it is but it also isn’t. But it is. I might have laughed about it a little. I hope Jasper doesn’t feel too bad about mother being upset.
Regardless, it did make me happy he wanted to do it. It wasn’t necessary and not even something I’d been thinking about, but the fact that he did was a nice feeling. I’m also happy he agreed to do the luncheon and promenade with me. I know stuffy social functions aren’t really his thing, but he came anyway and had fun, so I was happy.
I also need to make a note to keep an eye on Alma and Akos. They were talking about drugging Jasper and putting him on an airship for Thavnair. I know why Jasper has difficulties traveling and I’m not going to push him on it. I get that they mean well, but I won’t forgive anyone who hurts him, either.
Ah! And I was finally able to give him his starlight presents! Sisters bless it’d been so long.
I also go to dance with someone from the Dotharl. He told me a bit about the Kha in the Steppes, and was impressed by my history. The conversation gets a bit hazy from there, but I remember vaguely that I enjoyed speaking with him. I don’t remember anything about my birth clan, only what I’ve been told by my family, so it was nice to hear that the Kha were...traders? I think he said?
I ALSO GOT TO DANCE WITH DJ CARVI. I can die happy. He’s coming out with a new orchestrion. But most importantly, I got to dance with DJ CARVI. ♥
I have my dance card with proof that I got to dance with my idol and I’m going to pin it by the autographed poster. Best night.

Sleeping Coeurl Exclusive! Zahra Kouris
Tumblr media
[Pictured: Lady Zahra Ikshana Kouris, heir to the Kouris house]
After cycles of silence in high society, not even making a debut or throwing a coming-of-age ceremony, Lady Kouris has finally made her presence known in waves.
First was the announcement by the family of them being open to marriage proposals for their first born. While they’ve had a handful of houses answer this call, none was more prominent than the Al-Bakir house. Known for their pleasure barges, the son and heir of the house, Lord Loran, is rumored to be a huge fan of our young heiress who has made a bit of a splash in Eorzea as a independent performer. Some sources claim it to be love at first sight, others believe it to be an obsession.
In a surprising move for Lady Zahra, who has been mostly moderate with her actions up until now, she went from touring Eorzea with her (now defunct) troupe Lasyah, to going independent, to opening up a large entertainment venue. While not wholly inexperienced, this was only after organizing one other entertainment event known as Rookie Rhapsody.
Both the event and the venue’s grand opening was a success, along with her collaborating her opening with merchants and shop keepers from all over to celebrate Holi in Radz-at-Han. With the world slowly descending into uncertainty and despair, helping to organize the festival which celebrates the triumph of good over evil was no small feat and made an impression. In addition, her venue opening promoted the support of the world-wide celebrated sport of Blitzball, of which she is a participant.
While the lady has not made an official debut in Hannish high society, she did make herself known these last few suns when she attended the Little Ladies Day social function and Promenade. While not exclusively limited to nobility, the floor was open for participants to discuss their plans for the future.
An official statement was made by Lady Zahra herself of plans to reclaim the land of her birth family which the Kouris house had set aside for her when she came of age. Located in the northwest mountains of Thavnair, she has declared that land to be set aside for Ilsabardian refugees. From what we were able to ascertain, this was an agreement made between her and a Garlean, so we can only assume the majority of the refugees will be from Garlemald.
We were able to reach Lady Zahra to make a few statements regarding everything surrounding her, and here was what she had to say to our questions:
“To be honest, I was never interested in getting involved in politics and high society. I was raised in that environment, so of course I know what I need to know, but I wanted to stay out of the spotlight because I didn’t want to inconvenience my family who took me in and raised me as their own flesh and blood.”
“However, everyone has to decide someday that there’s things worth fighting for, people you want to protect. And that’s okay, because we’re family. We’re supposed to inconvenience each other every now and again. I opened Ameya for me, because I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I decided to take on the responsibilities of heir because I’m a Kouris, and I believe in what my family stands for. I love my family, this house, and I want to become the leader it needs.”
“And there is no true leader who could sit back and watch others suffer when they can do something to help. Thavnairians are about community - while we do try to be pragmatic, it’s not at the cost of our humanity.”
“And lastly, because I keep getting asked this - I don’t care to discuss my personal life with anyone, especially not the press. However, while I thank my family for trying to look out for my best interests with the tabloid regarding suitors...it was unnecessary. I am in a serious relationship with someone and therefore I unfortunately would be unable to respond to any official marriage requests. I’ve cleared up the misunderstanding with my family and the tabloid who published the article. I have also written formal apologies to all the families involved. I hope this is the last I’ll hear about it.”
Lady Kouris refused any other discussion regarding who it is she is seeing, although she did deny it was Lord Loran Al-Bakir, stating that while her family had thanked them for their interest, she had already been involved in her current relationship long before the petition was made. She also clarified that she had no interest in marriage currently, as her work and the rebuilding project will take up a considerable amount of her time.
The Kouris family could not be reached for comment.
We here at the Sleeping Coeurl will be keeping one eye open on Lady Kouris to see where she’ll be going next.

Whispers
“You can keep me in this box,”
“They’ll all betray you in the end.”
“And you can deny I exist.”
“Just like they did.”
“But each day I chip away.”
“You can see them and you deny it.”
                                                      “I grow stronger.”
“Keep closing your eyes to the truth.”
“I will take away everything you cherish.”
                             “It’s okay to forget, right?”
“I will destroy everything you are.”
                                      “Keep running from the pain.”
                                                  “Stay afraid of the dark.”
“Drip. Drip. Drip.”
                                        “Because I’m coming for you.”

Dear Diary 50
I’ve been incredibly busy going back and forth from Thavnair to Eorzea. I’ve so many things on my plate, from helping to keep the house in order to getting everything ready for Holi. Ameya’s opening will be the same weekend, and I’m very nervous.
Quin came to visit after I spoke with my father about his request regarding the Garlemald refugees. Father already agreed to grant it, he just wanted to speak with Quin and he wanted to stress we could only have the land if we cleared it of the monsters that had made a home there. That home once belonged to my birth family. It’s considered haunted, I’m guessing because of what happened to my people. Probably just superstition.
I think I’ve lost weight, my clothes are really loose on me. I don’t think anyone’s noticed. I haven’t been skipping meals on purpose, I think I’ve just been too stressed and busy to think about it. I didn’t even realize until I got dressed the other day and realized my pants were slipping off. I’ve fixed some of my clothes that I wear more regularly.
Jasper brought up something interesting while we were out hiking about my sight. He thought maybe some special glasses could be made for me to help when I travel back and forth between Eorzea and Thavnair, or just in general. He asked me how I feel going back and forth since Eorzea’s a lot more....dense with aether? If I’m honest, it was really rough at first. I’ve adjusted better, but it’s still somewhat uncomfortable the first few days. Porting back and forth has left me taking a lot of headache and nausea medicine.
I’ve never talked to my parents about my situation because...I guess I didn’t want to stand out. Or maybe I was afraid people would have another reason to decide I was different from my family and use it against them. I don’t really know, it just felt like it wasn’t something I should share. But I feel bad now knowing that my friends and even associates know more about me than my own family.
I wrote a letter to my mother about it, and the next day she sent me a package through the moogles with four pairs of different glasses - two regular and two sunglasses.
She told me she knew about my ability - or she guessed I likely had it(she implied it was hereditary but didn’t elaborate, so Jasper’s guess was correct I think) - and had been waiting for cycles for me to confide in her about it. As a side project, every other cycle she’d improve on the formula for the glasses and set aside new pairs for me...just in case I’d ask. She told me she hoped with the glasses, I wouldn’t need the medicine anymore, and that she was happy I was finally comfortable enough to share my secret with her.
I sat in my room and cried for a while. I love my mother so, so much.
It’s weird when I wear them. Colors are incredibly dulled and I can’t really see people’s aura. Like, it’s there, but really muted. But it helps a lot.
And that’s all I want to say about our hike. Well, outside of the fact that I was happy to spend time with Jasper of course! But I don’t want to really go into things that were personal to him on here, even if I have feelings on it. That’s between us....and the elementals, I guess.
I haven’t heard from the creepy stalker guy, although I’m sure he was at my show. I wonder what he thought about my song. I know everyone told me I should play the game, but father is already putting that family on hold with their marriage request while trying to figure out what they’re up to - I don’t really feel I need to go out of my way to kiss his ass and get close to him. Right now, we’re just trying to get proof they’re being backed by who we think they’re being back by so we can move forward.
The Hearth saw a lot more people than ever before last night. It was a lot of fun, but something went down between Corina and Jude. He kept calling her a spy, and I’m not sure why he thought that’d be okay to do at a public establishment. He knows our rules are that everyone is welcome. I’m not sure what’s going to happen. Ms. Maria doesn’t say anything, so maybe she doesn’t care? She’s weirdly laid back.
All I know is that I can’t allow that sort of behavior when he comes to work for me at Ameya. Should I get all the staff together prior to and go over my expectations? I’m a little worried. He’s my security, I don’t need him starting fights.
Still, it’s nice that people are having fun at the Hearth. It’s nice to have a place to relax at since we’re all over the place lately. Especially with the state the world is coming to.
I hope Quin’s doing okay. I just...I know this is hard for him. All of my friends from Garlemald. At least in this way, with the refugees, I can do something for them. They’re not imperial soldiers, some of them are fighting for the alliance, or are just civilians. They want to know if their families are safe. I’d want to know that too, in their shoes. Or, they’re just in shock.
I don’t know. I feel like every time I turn around something new is coming up. I’m trying to keep a sense of normalcy around so people have something to turn to as a distraction. I want Ameya to be that. I just hope I can keep it up.

The Untitled Article; A Harbor Herald Exclusive!
Tumblr media
I firmly assure you, dear reader, that no one is looking forward to this article.  Few subscribe to the Herald for the navel-gazing scribblings of a world-travelling Captain. Nevertheless, yours truly indulges in what pleasures she can avail herself of when riding aethercurrents away from her ship; anchored afar, haunted within and without.
Perhaps you are still reading, not put off by self-indulgent run-on sentences? Then, yes, someone is looking forward within this article.
I continue to assure you, dear reader, that no one could have expected the event that inspired this column. This concert had a few flyers here and there, yes; stapled to weather-rotted chocobo porters’ stables, to overcrowded corkboards across Eorzea. A self-deprecating advert; ‘the untitled show’ at the Still and Strings. One of many; nothing special. Faithful readers: as you may now expect, this show was anything but forgettable. From the proprietor’s own introductory piece outlining the benefits of his dive bar in the North Shroud, to the closing duets in royal blue and gold, all within the Stills found ourselves stitched into their ever-broadening tapestry.
One did not have to be aether-sensitive to attune themselves to the mood of the evening. It surrounded you, enveloped you, made you welcome, made you part of a greater whole even if you’d not so much as braved the elementals to cross the threshold here before. Each performer took the stage with grace and confidence, inspiring all our eyes to turn their way, our bodies to move in time with their songs, their dances. The casual intimacy of smiling and huffing out a breathless laugh as you bump into someone while dancing; the shared glance of ‘this is so good, right?’ each time; this cannot be anticipated; you cannot look forward to it. It can only happen in a place where everyone is comfortable; where drinks are named after performers and guests; where those who claim to be retired come back because it’s harder to stay away than to return.
The performers mingled with the audience, during and after their shows. Soaked with sweat, booze, perfume, they took their bows gracefully on the stage and then huddled in the gardens with friends afterward, giddy and free. The mossy basement of the Stills was fair humming with aetheric signatures: those who had a good first evening, or third evening, or fiftieth evening, all communing and agreeing that this was the stage for them to return to once it’s open next moon.
Secret duets, new variations, first performances; all who came tonight found something they weren’t quite expecting; something unifying and transformative, a talisman against the troubles from Ilsabard that hold our star in its ravenous, icy grip.
No one who saw the poster about the Untitled Show was likely looking forward to it, placing it above their numerous other tasks, until they decided to show up. After tonight, dear reader, I guarantee that any who happen into such a casual, backwater event will be looking forward to the next. One of many; each one special.
Enchantment and Endurance,
Idanwyn Lluanswys
Food and Lifestyle Columnist for The Harbor Herald
Ed. Note: Captain Lluanswys of the Free Trader Nixie would like to reinstate that she remains neutral regarding the current situation with Garlemald. Additionally, one can enjoy shows at the Still and Strings by making one’s way to the North Shroud, behind the last waterfall on your left after Hyrstmill.

Arrangements
“What is that?”
The warmth of a heavy, familiar, and comforting hand settled upon her shoulder and Zahra looked up from her father’s massive office desk to regard the man of the hour. Cetin looked down upon his daughter with a warm, kind smile as he leaned heavily upon his cane - a recent addition to his repertoire since falling ill.
“Something I’ve been working on for a friend. A request.” At the top of the document was the Kouris family’s crest. Below that was the header ‘RELOCATION PROJECT: SITARA VILLAGE’. At a passing glance, one could see the details were about relocating refugees to the abandoned village of Sitara in the northwest mountains. The land had been claimed by the Kouris family, but they’d had difficulties finding people to remain on the land due to rumors of it supposedly being cursed.
His hand on her shoulder tensed before he leaned in to get a better look. “A relocation project? S’first I’ve heard of it, Hara.” his cool gray eyes slid over to his child. Undaunted, Zahra beamed at her father.
“Quin mentioned it a few weeks back. I thought I’d look into drafting up a formal proposal.”
“Quintilius?” a soft rumbling sound came from her father and he shifted, moving away from her to push some papers aside and prop himself against the desk. Setting the cane on the side, he crossed his arms. “One of your...no, not Eorzean. He’s from Garlemald, right? House Gervais?” he plucked the paper and began to take a look.
“Y..yes...”
Cetin spared Zahra a look that said Come on, you didn’t think I wouldn’t look into your friends? before glancing back at the document. “Did he ask you to do this? ‘Providing provisions up to and including enough food, water, clothing, equipment, building materials, protection, and supplies for half a cycle until they’re able to cultivate the land and get the mines operational for self-sustainment’?” he waggles the paper. “Until when, Hara? How long do you expect these refugees to stay? Do you know how much this is going to cost?”
“I’ve already calculated projected expenses but I believe the rewards will outweigh the potential risks.” Zahra reaches for her paper. “And yes, he wanted me to see if I could help the refugees in Garlemald find a place until things get back under control. But we don’t know how long that will be, and it’s not a guarantee that everyone will want to return. Still, I don’t think it’s wrong to give a helping hand. Besides, if we can show everyone that the land isn’t cursed and that it’s all superstition, we can encourage our people to come to the land as well. We can only benefit and all we have to do is invest just a fraction of our resources.”
Cetin let out a heavy sigh and returned Zahra’s paper. He reached out to cup his daughter’s face in his hands, brushing her cheeks with his thumbs. Turning her head to face him, he leaned in, forcing her to look into his eyes.
“Hara, I worry about you.” his brows furrowed and the corner of his lips tugged into a deep frown. “You are my heir, because of that, there will be those who will want to use the privileges and advantages that come with your position, like with that Bozjan commander. I don’t want you getting hurt dealing with these foreigners who see you as an easy target to take advantage of.”
Zahra placed her hands ontop of his and closed her eyes. “It’s not like that, baba. I know you’re just worried, but Quin is a good friend. He’s saved my life. He’s one of the ones who has seen me at my lowest and didn’t run off. He’s just worried about his people. If Thavnair was the same position, and Quin had the power to help my people, I’d do the same thing.”
She felt her father shift subtly before his forehead came to rest upon hers. “Forgive an old man his worries.” he pressed a kiss on her forehead and pulled away. “The draft looks good so far, you make good projections and I noticed you’re dipping into your own savings we set aside for the project. You don’t have to. You can pull from the main accounts, I’ll allow it. Your savings won’t be enough for the mining equipment you’ll need, anyhow.”
Zahra’s expression began to light up as her father, gave his pre-approval of the plan. Before she could start to celebrate, however, he raised a hand.
“However -” he continued. “I have some conditions. I want your friend to make his own proposal. These are his people he wants to bring over, I want him to make his own appeal to the Kouris house. None of the shit that happened last time where you’re relaying everything and it’s all just supposed to get dumped on us, meanwhile I’ve never even met or heard of the person who wants this all to happen. Secondly, that land...” he lets out a sigh and pinches the bridge of his nose. “There’s a reason it’s considered cursed. But for now, it’s overrun by monsters.” he points at Zahra. “You and your friends will need to clear it out and make it habitable. Otherwise, it’s no deal.”
“I....I’ll talk it over with Quin.” she didn’t think it’d be a problem, but coming all the way over to Thavnair to deal with a monster problem?
“I’ll leave you to it, I know you’ve got other tasks to handle, like with getting your business going.” he grabbed a stack of paperwork and ignored her squawk of protest. “I can do this much. I’m sick, not dead.”
“The doctor said you shouldn’t be working!” he waved off her protests as he headed out.
“We adults don’t know everything.” he grumbled as he closed the door.

“Where/what is their home?”
Black OC Week is a week meant to celebrate and encourage black creators in the community. Feb. 20-26 I will be posting daily prompts for people to respond to for their characters. Responses can as long and as short as you want them to be. And can be in the form of any media you want.
Be shameless. Be as self-indulgent as you want. Show off how much love you’ve poured into these characters. Have fun! That’s what this is for!
