Blades is two for two in retconning Aerin’s parents’ personalities/relationships with their younger son

First they make Arlan go from a man who appeared negligent, but ultimately not malicious toward his son whom he clearly loved in his own way to a cruel father who relishes the idea that his useless son might have gotten himself killed so that he would not have to worry about the politics of executing him

And now Aurinae has a warm relationship with her son when the very first reference to her in the story was to establish that Aerin was essentially invisible to her, because do you know how badly a child has to be neglected to be scouring fantasy stories to try to find magic that would make them, not loved, just noticed?

Like, that's an "s", plural "parents".

Because I really don’t get the impression that Aerin was lying here, despite the act he was putting on at the time. And even if he had been, I wish they’d have written it so there’s either some acknowledgment from him to MC that he might’ve stretched the truth, or, better yet, Aurinae acknowledging that she wasn’t a good enough mother to Aerin in life that she is now resolved to try in the afterlife now that she’s got a second chance.

Similarly, I once talked about how Arlan’s feelings toward Aerin could’ve deteriorated to where they are now as he had time to process Aerin’s betrayal over the year he was incarcerated or missing (especially so for the former, if he had time to visit Aerin and saw his son showed no remorse), but that’s never even alluded to.

I just wish we’d gotten a natural progression in the characterization of Aerin’s parents, because it is completely plausible for them to have gotten from point A to point B, it’s only that the series portrays it as a jarring 180° instead of portraying it as development, and it makes his own background and the characterization derived from it inconsistent as a result.

If you go this long without having sex with Aerin, then suddenly decide to go for it in the middle of Book 3, you get extra dialogue.

As far as I can tell, you don't get anything extra with Nia or Valax. They just go with it as usual. Aerin is the only one who feels the need to... warn you, I guess?

i love all the variations for aerin's route, i will always still prefer returned!aerin over owlbear-mauled!aerin because the latter still has a lot less content and on-screen development but i really feel like they took a lot of the critique regarding his rushed return in book 2 into account with the owlbear route.
