Daendels Moments (Part 16)
To complete his once-fixed plans, he spared neither person nor thing. He arbitrarily displaced the Regents and thus broke the various threads of personal and family ties in their districts. No prayers, no pleas, no attachment to native soil could soften him. “Great Lord, here lies my father buried; let me die here too!” begged a native chief, throwing himself at the feet of the terrible man. “Go or die with him,” was the reply, the clenched fist made the sword hilt rattle.

Daendels Moments (Part 15)
On one of his journeys, he [Daendels] arrives at a military post and sees that repairs to a building which he had ordered have been carried out. He expresses his approval to the commanding sub-lieutenant and asks him: “Has this repair already been paid for, and by whom?” [D]
“I paid for it, with Your Excellency’s approval.”
“What do you say? Do you dare disobey my orders? Did I not command that only the Receiver should pay? Or must this once again become Company’s extortion and villainy? Man! I dismiss you from service; I have no further need of you. Bring me paper, pen, and ink here!” [D]
The Sous-lieutenant goes on guard and brings what is requested.
“Stand still, man! Bend over, lend me your back as a writing desk!” [D]
And the formidable man [Daendels] writes: Sous-lieutenant Wardenaer is dismissed from the King's service. -Daendels
The dismissed sub-lieutenant picks the paper up from the ground and asks:
“Marshal, is there anything else from your orders?”
“No, march, away!” is the reply from the angered man [Daendels], who grumbling continues on his way. No one dared to approach him.
Then the former sub-lieutenant returns from the guardhouse, where he has hidden the writing utensils:
“Marshal, a word, if you please!”
So the Marshal wants the Javanese to suffer!"
"What, man! Me? Do you take me for one of those vile Company swindlers?" [D]
Not me, I know better; but since Your Excellency did not order payment, if I did not pay, the Javanese would suffer (...) “The Marshal wants labor without pay, just like the Company.”
“What! Me? Think about what you’re saying. I will have you shot.” [D]
So I paid the natives for the Marshal; I give them that money."
Wardenaar turns around and leaves.
"What? What are you saying? Come back, tell me the story; but if you lie, I'll have you hanged." [D]
The dismissed sub-lieutenant tells the matter, and Daendels listens to him, sitting on a garden bench.
"Is all this true?" [D]
"Yes, Marshal, I have preserved your good name."
"Fetch pen and ink!" [D]
Wardenaar goes and returns with what he desired.
“Stand still! Bend over!” [D]
And Daendels writes on the back of the young man:
“The former sub-lieutenant Wardenaar is hereby, in the name of the King of Holland, appointed Captain of Engineers.” -Daendels

Daendels and Davout
(...) The theft of a bottle of gin during a war march at the beginning of the Russian campaign of 1812, the French Marshal Davout had one of his soldiers shot dead on the spot; and Daendels and Davout did their duty in this, a difficult, hard duty, but necessary: because of this, Daendels' battalions in North Holland were always brave and warlike; because of this, Davout's divisions remained the best and strongest, even until the end of Napoleon's fatal campaign.
Was looking for other stuff in my notes when I stumble upon this 👀 Not sure if Davout actually did that so if anyone know, pls do let me know 🫡 Tbh I've always think that if the two rlly get to know each other, they would get along well haha. Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels Analysis Series (In the Indies Part 15)
Janssens had not been able to escape the consequences of French rule: he had served the Emperor honestly and loyally, but without enthusiasm. Daendels, on the other hand, had already anticipated the fateful decision by which his fatherland would be incorporated into France; in everything, he had placed France's ruler first as the protector and decider of the fate of that country's overseas possessions. He had, at every opportunity, and openly, denounced love for the fatherland as a vain national prejudice. (...)
(...) Legend has long held that Daendels was the savior of Java (...)
No comments for this rlly haha 🫠 But I agree alot w the last point (duh) 🔥 Anyway I rlly want to talk abt how basically many Indonesian ppl kept talking only abt if Daendels paid the worker or no. Personally I don't have a problem w it at first but now it's js so annoying 💀Like cmon bruh he had more than just that srsly⁉️ So far I never had those kind of ppl asking since not many know that I research him irl lol I don't look like I did n ppl js know that I like history 😆 Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels Analysis Series (In the Indies Part 14)
We see in Daendels's measures in this area [Coffee] further proof of how little he was capable of and inclined to adapt his ideas to reality and the demands of unavoidable circumstances.
It is difficult to say, however, who Daendels's primary advisor in financial matters was, especially since the Council of the Indies's communications consistently presented the Governor-General as the author of his proposed plans. (...)
(...) Wiese, upon the surrender of the governorship, could point to this with justifiable pride—had suddenly, according to Daendels, proved insufficient; so insufficient that, at the beginning of his administration, as well as at its end, national bankruptcy was imminent! (...) But not the slightest trace of this can be found in Daendels' correspondence. On the contrary: the administration continued its course, expanded and remunerated by him.
(...) His administration has thus proven that one can accomplish great works, but also make great mistakes. (...)
How the European colony, weary of Daendels' tyranny, yearned for a change of master. For Daendels had shown "the military arm" not only against the princes of Java, but against all and in everything.
Even in the administration of justice, he [Daendels], in his capacity as General and Chief, had to have the final say, and no sentence could be executed without his consent. (...)
He threatened to have Polanen, who had acted contrary to the Marshal's impossible commercial principles, executed if he ventured to Batavia. The Sandol-Roy, Van den Bosch, had to experience his disgrace in the order to leave the Colony within 24 hours. (...)
(...) His will, bound by neither moral nor political considerations, affected friend and foe alike. And while a Buyskes, initially appointed by him as President of the High Government, shortly thereafter, misunderstood and with resentment in his heart, left Java
I think I remembered that this came from someone that doesn't like Daendels very much. He tried to fight Mendels statement of smth I forgot. But Mendels quickly countered him in a newspaper 👀 Tbh I still stand that many ppl back then hate Daendels bcs he exposes them for their bad actions so well at the end, Daendels was the one that got Antagonized badly. This could also happen bcs he had more enemies than friends 😭 They js never understand him smh. Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels Analysis series (In the Indies Part 13)
Daendels, as we have already noted, was above all a man of the sword, and had made himself known as such. For this reason, given the laxity of which the defense of Java's coasts had yielded so many sad examples, we regretted that his mission to the Indies had not been decided upon much earlier.
(...) The abuses of an administration that had been renewing itself for over a century, both where they prevailed within its own bosom and where they impacted the native economy, were no secret to anyone. (...) A man like Daendels therefore came neither unexpectedly nor unwelcome.
(...) This is so true that Daendels, just as Raffles after him, encountered no significant opposition to his reform measures. (...)
(...) Van IJsseldijk, no friend of Van Hogendorp and the confirmed enemy of Engelhard, the Director-General of the previous administration who nevertheless became Daendels' right-hand man (...)
(...) this was all the more dear to Daendels because he had been nurtured on French soil and was of French origin. (...)
The next step is the policy towards European governance and populations, both European and indigenous. (...) Daendels put an end to this by imposing a general provision stipulating that the salaries of all European civil servants, as was accepted in every government at the time, would be borne by the government. (...) Daendels writes, that this payment would be in silver.
I don't think I have much comments in this one😭 I was actually planning to not add a yapping session in this series but since I've already done that in the "Daendels Moments" series, I'm conflicted lowkey. Reason is bcs if I stopped the yapping session, it looks like I become lazier (?) but at the same time I often don't rlly have time to add commentaries 😔 I've decided that the yapping session in this series will still be here js if I don't have anything to say, I'll js talk abt random shi that are still related to Daendels ofc.
Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels Analysis Series (In the Indies Part 12)
Daendels was entrusted by King Louis with the task of defending what had been spared of our old colonial possessions in the East Indies against the power of England.
(...) The regulations with which Daendels, as "Governor-General of the Indies," as the title granted him was, was provided, had to bear a strongly military tint
Daendels's primary objectives were to organize the land forces, regulate naval movements, defend the colonies, and inflict damage on the enemy in the Indies. (...)
The unique character of Daendels' Instructions was first evident in the stipulation that his administration in the Indies must be kept separate from the previous one, so that any abuses that had crept into it would not be imputed to him.
(...) On his journey there, Daendels personally experienced how one of the basic conditions for the colony's defensibility was already lacking. Freedom of the sea existed in nothing more than name.
it is still stated with regard to Governor General Daendels: "That General was more strongly attached to the interest of Bonaparte than to his own country."
Not once, but repeatedly, Daendels spoke of being able to hold his own for several years, as the utmost he could endure in fulfilling the task assigned to him: he was therefore not even allowed to complete the works he had planned on the Bantam coast, and they did not survive his administration. (...)
Daendels did not regulate his actions according to the national institutions, but only according to his own way of thinking.
Point 6 is interesting. I remembered reading alot of documents that said the reason why Daendels was recalled back is bcs Napoleon was afraid that he might establish his own kingdom or empire in the Indies. That's bullshit imo. I've never seen anything (so far) even in his letter that Daendels had any intentions of doing stuff like that. He genuinely js want to serve the emperor like anyone does. I js thought abt this yesterday n it makes me more pissed at Napoleon smh 😐 He himself blundered by recalling Daendels n replacing it w Janssens.
This supported by the fact many historians had said if only Daendels stayed longer the British might never invaded Indies. But still, the sad part is if Daendels stayed longer, he might not survive 😭 He's already very ill afterall. Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels and Aledia Story Idea (+ a lil theory)
I've been thinking of a story on how Daendels n Aleida met so I might aswell write it here so I won't forget 🫡
-Aleida n Daendels alreay met each other since they were kids but it was like a brief thing. They probably saw each other when their parents are having a conversation (if that make sense)
-But then years later when Daendels already graduated n shi, many girls in hattem likes him (Daendels rizz is actually real guys) Aleida wasn't rlly part of that but she notices him staring at her for a while during some sort of event in Hattem (haven't thought much abt this)
-Eventually Daendels was the first one to make a move. Tbh, I think their relationship already happens before the patriot sutff bcs Aleida's father actually approved of the marriage but then he takes it back when Daendels joined the patriotic stuff
-Now this means that their relationship already happen far long before those patriotic events⁉️ But when exactly that happens? Not sure either lol, I'm pretty sure Daendels dated Aleida before he graduates but that's js my theory tho
Yea, that's all for now, if u guys want to add like suggestion/theory abt this feel free to do so ofc 🌙

Daendels Analysis Series (In the Indies Part 11)
(...) Daendels' governorship could hardly be compared to Raffles's administration. His entire rise, the circumstances under which he lived and worked, the events in his homeland and abroad, had led him in a direction diametrically opposed to that in which Raffles had moved from his youth
Born in an era when the public mind was tense to the extreme due to the repercussions of events in France, Daendels' first act, as soon as he reached manhood, was armed resistance against the Stadtholder, an act carried out with the same energy, but also with the same violent exaggeration, as his later life would testify (...)
The same lack of human understanding and self-control, the same almost arbitrary intransigence that characterized Daendels's administration in the Indies, he had already displayed in the Batavian Republic. Truly good intentions had been thwarted by this. (...)
(...) While his unwavering boldness, unlike many of his contemporaries, led him to action and grand projects, he had rarely considered the scale of what was possible, and always placed a much higher value on what he wanted than on what he could achieve. He had never shown himself to be a statesman. Only as a warrior had he garnered and earned respect.
Hmm, this is quite of a critical point of Daendels. Although I don't necessarily disagree w it 😭 I think many of this series that I haven't published contained critical points like this sadly. In the first point, Daendels was compared to Raffles which is interesting. There's a series done by someone that basically talked abt Daendels and Raffles but I don't think they compared them. I've read them n honestly it's nothing much 🥲 Anyway, that's all for now, thank you guys n have a great day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels and De Kock
De Kock held the position of chief of staff of that flotilla and took an active and courageous part in the operations conducted in those days. (...) Governor-General Albertus Henricus Wiese, however, appointed him his Adjutant-General; and after Marshal Daendels assumed command, he entrusted him with the most important military duties.
(...) Daendels respected and loved De Kock. De Kock respected his superior, but did not fear him.
Damn it's been awhile since I post the last analysis series. I've js been busy n tired 😭 But I'll try to post more of this again bcs my notes are full of this series that I already forgot where I read it from so might aswell clean it up right haha 🥲 I rlly don't have a comment for this so that's all for now, thank you guys n have a nice day, stay safe 🌙

Daendels Moments (Part 14)
“In the time of Marshal Daendels,” the lieutenant said, “a wealthy Chinese man owned a beautiful estate near Surabaya. I don't know the name of the estate. The Marshal had cast an greedy eye on the property, but learned that the owner was unwilling to sell it. He summoned the reluctant man; but when he, too, as Grand Lord, failed, he had the recalcitrant man hanged between the main gateposts of the estate, which he then appropriated. Nearby was another estate, also belonging to a Chinese man, which also aroused the desire of the ruler. When this owner was also summoned, he resolved to outsmart his neighbor and try to gain the Marshal's favor. When he [Daendels] asked him if his estate was for sale, he [the chinese man] answered with a smile. "What do you want for it?" was the question. “Whatever the Great Lord is pleased to give for it,” answered the son of the Heavenly Kingdom. The Chief Governor had him given a "kobang." Hence, even today, the two countries are still called Simpang and Sa-Kobang. "What do those two names mean?" asked Van Berkenstein. Simpang means "to take away," a polite expression for stealing. A kobang is a copper coin worth two pennies. Sa-Kobang, therefore, means a coin worth two pennies. “Two pennies for an estate!” Van Berkenstein said incredulously. (...)
