Chapter 8: Enter Archangels
Zera woke up in a grey room, she looked around and stood up off the floor to find the room empty. "Hello?" She called into space, hearing a faint echo calling back to her.
"Child, you are sick and refusing to be seen. Why?" Luz snarled.
"I can take care of myself Luz, do not coddle me."
"Coddle you? Coddle you? Are you that stubborn and delusional that you believe you are some big monster everyone should fear?" Luz barked as he towered over her, his amber eyes boring into the girl below him, "You are but a babe in this world of beasts. Have this news flash before you bring about your premature demise, you are not yet strong enough nor big enough to fill your role just yet." He gripped her throat and lifted her off the ground, the first time Zera had felt a physical presence from Luz and it was terrifying.
"You have killed a guardian angel, but Little Colt that means nothing to those of our kind and demons you will fight. I have brought about a war that divided all; angels and demons alike have brought about death and destruction. Your own father has had his fair share of torment and dastardly deeds in this realm as well as others." Luz growled out as he tightened his rip on the struggling girl.
Zera clawed at his wrist as she gasped desperately for air, "L-Luz!" She wheezed and he did not flinch at his now bloodied wrist.
"You are a brat who needs to be put in her place until you can back your bark. All we do is to prolong your life long enough for you to fulfill your wishes. Your purpose. Yet you insist on letting some illness claim you? Have I bet on the wrong colt?" Luz hissed softly at her before dropping her.
She coughs as the air started to flood her lungs, then she looked up at him with wide eyes. "Luz what the FUCK?!" She screamed at him, Zera's eyes welling up from the shock. "Where is all this coming from?"
"It's coming from the fact that you don't take advantage of your opportunities. You are sick, you can use that to go to Heaven and see Archangel Raphael. Raphael will get you to Michael. Michael will then get you to answers. On top of all that you will be healed!" Luz glared down at her.
Zera took a moment to process all this, she nodded slowly. A sense of overwhelming fear overpowering her. She realized, he was right. What was she doing squandering an opportunity? "I'll take the opportunity, sir..."
"Good." Luz huffed and waved her away, "Seize your chance Little Colt."
Zera woke up, she looked around and found herself in her temporary room. Seth's room was not unoccupied, Azazel was seated by the bed and Seth on the other side. "You're awake now..." Azazel had a relieved smile.
"Father..." Zera paused, "I am sick." She admitted and looked at him with a frown. "I need help."
"You'll be seeing my uncle Raphael, and only Raphael." Azazel agreed, "He's very good at his job."
"What is his job?"
"He's the archangel who reigns over medicine and doctors." Seth chimed in, "He's the doctor of the family."
Zera nods, "When will we go?"
"As soon as possible," Seth replied.
"Then I'll get out of your hair so you can leave." Azazel stood and looked at Seth, "I want her back in one piece and in better condition than she is now."
"I'll bring her back," Seth reassured his older brother who nodded and left with Aviana on his tail.
Seth turned to Zera and covered her eyes, "Keep your eyes closed."
"Fine." Zera huffed and shut them under his hand which covered half her face. There was a sound Zera couldn't make out and then Seth lifted his hand from her eyes. "Can I open them now?"
"Yes," Seth answered and she opened her eyes to the familiar room with the different hallways. Seth took her hand and walked to the hall with a plaque that looked like it had a stethoscope.
The hall was a fiery red with white, it was long and Zera was beginning to lose her patience by the time that they finally made it into a large office.
A red-haired man stood there at the center reading a book, not looking up he addressed Seth. "What have you brought me, my boy?"
"My niece," Seth answered, causing the man to look up from his book.
"You brought his daughter here? Why?" The red-haired man stood, narrowing his eyes.
"She's sick and needs help Uncle Raphael," Seth answered. "Zera needs your help."
Raphael gave him a look of confusion before turning his attention to Zera. "Fine, but I'm reporting this to Michael."
"Can it be after we leave?" Seth asked hopefully.
"My father doesn't know I'm here." Zera lied, looking at Raphael pleadingly. "Father refused for me to come so I could get the help I need." She frowned deeply.
Raphael thought this over some before nodding, "Fine. Come here, child." He walked over to a bed that rose from the ground and patted it. "Sit here."
Zera walked over and took her seat on the bed, she felt a wave of heat wash over her again. She was getting sick again.
Archangel Raphael did a full examination on her and scribbled down notes on his clipboard. He asked various questions some of which were, "How are you feeling?", "How recent was the last episode?" and, "Does something prompt you to feel like this?"
All of which Zera answered in an exasperated tone to which she got smacked upside her head."Be respectful brat." Raphael hissed at her and she snarled in response.
Zera rubbed her head and grumbled to herself as he continued with the examination. Zera looked to Seth who gave her a reassuring smile. "So Uncle Raphael, what have you found?"
"I'll need to test her blood," Raphael answered simply.
Zera shakes her head, "I'm not doing any needles." She hissed.
"Well if you want to get better, then you'll be doing the needles," Raphael remarked.
Zera glared but sighed as she realized there was no getting out of it. "Fine." She growled.
Raphael walked away and returned a moment later with a syringe and a vial. He walked over, wrapping a sort of tape around her arm. Then, he drew the blood and wrapped up the needle mark.
Footsteps echoed as a brunette man walked in with brown eyes and wings as large as can be. "Brother, I need a favor." He said and paused. His gaze went over from Seth to Zera then to Raphael. Then he looked back at Zera. "Little Marnie?"

Chapter 7: One Step Forward, Ten Steps Backwards
Seth's voice rang through the darkness, Zera opened her eyes and found herself looking up at him. "Zera, you zoned out there or what?"
"I'm sorry, what?" She looked around to see where they were. The last thing she could remember was Luz. Were they leaving already?
"I was telling, I've noticed you seem to be a little sick. What does your father say about it?" Seth's eyes seemed intensely focused on her.
"Nothing because I'm not sick," Zera answered ignoring the confusion that left her feeling a bit foggy. Seth glared at his niece who merely waved him off. "You're reading too much into nothing."
"Zera. Darling, I know you are, you need to talk about whatever this is." Seth urged her, frowning. "I don't understand why you are ignoring something as concerning as this."
Taking a deep breath, Zera began, "Seth, if it happens again, then I will. I promise." She assured him," Where are we going now?"
"I'll be taking you to my place, we'll drop by here every day and use the library to keep you up to speed here."
"Why this library?"
"Time passes differently in Heaven, it doesn't travel as quickly as Earth," Seth explained, humming softly as he stood in front of her. "Now let's get back."
Zera nodded and closed her eyes, she felt a soft breeze brush past her. When she opened her eyes, Zera found herself in Seth's living room, "Where am I sleeping?"
"You'll be in my room, I'll be sleeping here," Seth answered, grabbing some blankets from a closet. Setting them down on the couch, he walked her to his room. "You can use my closet to put your luggage away if you want." Seth offered, opening his door and gestured for her to walk in.
The room was a decent size, the bed was rather large with grey sheets and beige pillows. The sheet was neatly tucked in under the mattress. Zera looked to Seth, "Thank you."
He smiled at her and nodded, "Of course, "I'll let you get settled in. Get some rest." Seth gave her a warning smile, then closed the door behind him as he returned to the living room.
Zera moved towards the door and rested her palm on it. She took a deep breath as she closed her eyes, feeling her energy extending towards it, Zera stepped back. She examined the door to ensure she properly sealed it.
She laid back on the bed and screamed in frustration, then looked towards the door. Waiting several minutes and felt relieved that Seth didn't seem to hear her. "Luz that was a wasted trip."
"I wouldn't necessarily say it was." He chirped into her car.
She rolled her eyes and glanced towards the direction and sat up in alarm when she saw the shadowy figure lying beside her. "L-Luz?"
"Were you expecting someone else?" The figure chuckled and she just stared in awe. "I was able to work some magic while you were spiraling." Luz continued and raised a hand in the air. As if beckoning her to come closer to him, he hummed a soft tune as she did. Immediately, she felt a sharp pain in her chest and the air in her lungs were forced out from her.
From Zera's chest came a small box, she gasped for breath as her shaky arms supported her on the bed. The box fell on to the bed and she coughed out. "What the hell is that?" She wheezed.
"Madeline's file."
Zera's eyes widened and she picked it up, "How did you...?"
"I am a man of many talents little one." Luz purred as he laid down fully on the bed.
Zera held up the box and examined it closely, turning the box over and she looked at Luz. His figure seemed to be watching her, she opened the box, "...are you sure this is Madeline's?"
"Yes," Luz answered. Suspicious of her question, he sat upon the bed.
"You're sure it's... up to date?" Zera looked up from the box, Luz nodded and she pulled out a notebook and opened it up."
"Of course it is, the archangels keep track of everyone and everything," Luz responded, concern creeping into his voice. "Why are you asking?"
"Half the notebook is blank," Zera began and Luz interrupted.
"That means she's still among the living."
"The last here is..." Zera pointed and gave up trying to decipher the characters on the page. "This doesn't look like any human language Luz."
Luz patted the space between them and Zera set down the notebook, he put a hand to the page without making contact with it. He muttered to himself, then looked towards her. "The last record of Madeline states she was last existing in 1415AD. She was last seen with runaway Azazel Colt and Aviana, last name unknown."
Zera snarled, "Damn it!" She screeched as she slammed her fist on the box, shattering it. "That's over 600 years ago Luz! She could be anywhere! This did nothing to help find her!"
The light began to drain and Zera's chest tightened with fear, Luz's voice was so low and even she felt chills. "It is not becoming of you to throw a tantrum little Colt. You want to be grown, then prove you are grown. When things do not go your way, what should you do instead of bitching and moaning about it."
The light slowly returned and Zera took a deep breath before answering, "I have to find another way to get what I need."
Luz gave a grin, fangs and pearly white teeth visible, "There you go."
Zera nodded slightly unnerved and looked at the broken box, furrowing her brows. "Aviana is too loyal to father to say anything. Father won't either. I can't push mother...perhaps," she looked up at Luz, "perhaps I could talk to my grandmother."
"You could if you think that would be the best course of action." Luz agreed and pointed to the door, "Either way, he is your ticket to her."
"I know he is, and I know to ensure he takes me to her," Zera responded as she set the notebook in her bag.
There was a knock on the door, Zera looked at it and whispered, "Luz, leave."
The shadowy figure of Luz dissipated and Zera undid the magic block on the door. She got up to unlock it only to find Aviana standing in front of Seth on the other side of the door. "See? I told you she was in one piece." He snapped at the brunette.
"Avi?"
"You didn't call yet, we wanted to make sure you're okay," Aviana responded, completely ignoring Seth and giving Zera a warm smile.
"Of course I am Avi." Zera smiled reassuringly in return, "You can let father know that I'm perfectly fine and I'm doing my school work." Zera giggled, "I haven't lost my sanity quite yet."
"Oh? You had sanity?" Aviana smirked. "Ain't that a miracle."
Zera giggled, "Very clever Avi."
Aviana gave the smaller girl a tight hug, "Just call your father so he doesn't explode. He almost came here, but Elijah was able to talk him into sending me instead."
Zera nodded, "Okay, I'll give him a ring." Aviana waited at the door while Zera dialed Azazel's number. On the second ring, he picked up, "Father~!"
"Zera Blackwell, what have you been doing? Why haven't you called?" Azazel snapped as soon as he heard his daughter's voice.
Zera huffed loudly and spoke, "I'm sorry Father, I was being told the house rules and then we had to get groceries because Seth apparently had none." She fibbed as she tapped her foot on the ground, clearly irritated.
"I see...all is...safe then?" Azazel asked, speaking slowly with a considerably softened tone.
The question and the sound his voice carried had caught Zera completely off guard, "Safe?... Yes, of course, it is." She assured, absentmindedly hugging herself.
There was a long silence, Zera almost thought that Azazel had hung up the phone before he spoke again. "Good, I know I..." His voice trailed off and there was another long pause before Zera could hear him clear his throat. "I expect you to complete your studies, and they had better be perfect. If I hear otherwise-"
The sudden change in subject and air of the conversation had jarred Zera lightly and agitated her. She couldn't help but explode when she cut him off, "Oh fuck off. I don't understand why you're getting so worked up, you have left me in the care of your brother. He is a better company than John was, I'm fine and Seth is in charge of my studies outside of home. Do me a favor and piss off." Zera snarled and crushed the phone in her grip, cutting her ear.
Aviana sighed, "You can't just take your anger out on the things around you. Now look, Seth doesn't have a phone anymore."
"He can buy himself a new phone. Azazel can go bite it. I don't care." Zera hissed, and she could feel her cheeks suddenly begin to warm. Ignoring it for the moment, she turned towards Seth. "Now can we get back to studies? I want to try and get tomorrow's portion out of the way."
Seth sighed and nodded, "Just get it from the bookshelf, on the bottom left."
Aviana glanced towards Seth in disbelief, "You actually have her wanting to do school work?"
"When you figure out how she works, compromise is easy." Seth shrugged.
Zera began to feel lightheaded as she stumbled towards the bookshelf. The adults had began to notice this and exchanged concerned looks, Aviana then reached out towards her. "Zera? Are you okay?"
"I-I'm fffine..." Zera waved her off, then used the steel bookshelf for support. Her vision started to blur and the voices that were supposed to belong to her uncle and best friend were muddled together. The next thing Zera knew, she could barely hear Luz and everything faded to black as she felt a sharp pain on her nose.

Chapter 6: Unwanted Memories
When Zera opened her eyes, she and Seth stood in a large empty room with fifteen hallway entrances. Each entrance had a different symbol on a silver plaque above the opening. One plaque caught Zera's eye. It was pure black, no symbol on it, but there was some sort of dent on the edges. It appeared as though whatever symbol it did bare was torn off long ago.
"Remember this..." Luz's voice was soft and his presence weak.
"Welcome home Zera." Seth smiled at her, she meekly smiled back. "This way to Archangel Haniel."
Seth led her towards the corridor with a chalice hanging above the entrance. Zera looked at the walls, they were snow white and the floor underneath them was marble. She couldn't help but scoff, Of course archangels would have a more expensive taste. The hallway was long, but when they finally reached the end of it there was a tall woman, her blonde hair was long and reached her lower back, she wore a pale blue gown that dragged on the floor. Zera's heart skipped a beat, causing her confusion.
As they got closer, she looked up at the newcomers, her eyes a warm ocean blue with a kind smile. When her gaze fell on Seth, there was a sudden coldness that reminded Zera of Azazel and she felt a shiver down her spine. "Boy, who have you brought this time?" There was an icy edge in each syllable.
"I've brought Zera Blackwell, daughter of Azazel Colt, Archangel Haniel." He answered and bowed deeply.
Instantly, the archangels face lit up, her wings seemed to appear out of nowhere and were opened to its full span as they fluttered with excitement. In an instant, she stood in front of Zera who took a step back in alarm. "Let me see your face cheraikir." Haniel, who towered over the young girl, leaned over so they were face to face.
Zera stood frozen, eyes wide, a wave of emotions crashing into her that she couldn't even begin to comprehend. She opened her mouth to speak, but her words were trapped in her throat as the deep blue eyes bore into her with great interest. Within her eyes, Zera could just barely see it, a hint of sadness pushed down.
"You look so much like your mother," Haniel noted, her warm smile shrank into a sad half smile. "Where is Azazel?" She stood at her normal height and looked down the hall.
"Father didn't come..." Zera answered softly, she never felt so small.
"Zera insisted I bring her to meet you, Azazel doesn't know she's here." Seth elaborated and Haniel's eyes seemed to pierce through him, lip curling up in a small scowl.
"Excuse me?" Haniel's wings folded up behind her, Zera couldn't push down whatever feelings rose within her.
Seth's gaze fell towards the ground, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "He doesn't want her to meet any of you, but that's all Zera wanted. She just wants to meet the family he kept from her. That's why I brought her here to meet you first that way-"
"This is not your daughter; the choice is not yours to make." Haniel glared at him, hostility in her face. "If I don't agree with his decisions, we cannot decide for him or for her.
"I forced him to bring me, Archangel Haniel." Zera finally chirped up, but her voice was barely above a whisper.
Haniel's gaze softened towards Zera, "Cheraikir, you are but a child. Seth is not, even if he acts like it. He knows very well not to allow himself to be persuaded by a mere babe to disobey his elders."
Zera glared lightly, pushing aside the strange feelings plaguing her, "You are unbelievably horrible at hiding favoritism Archangel Haniel."
Seth tensed up and Haniel was clearly caught off guard, "I beg your pardon?"
"Pardon not granted." Zera spat softly.
Haniel's cold eyes focused on Seth, "What in Father's name have you done to this cheraikir?"
"What makes you think it was him? I've only recently met him up until a couple of months ago. All I have ever known was from my father."
Haniel stared at her in disbelief, she turned to Seth and began to speak in that strange language again. Based on the tension between them and Haniel's breaking down into tears, Zera could tell they were arguing.
"Little Colt, calm them down, you need her trust so you can get the information," Luz spoke in a hushed tone, making it difficult to hear him. She could barely feel his presence near her, Zera broke down sobbing uncontrollably. She felt her own confusion alongside an eternity's worth of pent up betrayal, sadness, longing, and a wave of fierce anger.
The bickering stopped, Haniel froze and Seth rushed to her side as Zera fell to her knees sobbing. "Zera, what's wrong? Talk to me." He begged and Haniel's voice rambled in what Zera could only guess was their language.
There was a panic in her voice as she asked Seth questions, but how did Zera know they were questions? The tears wouldn't stop, she could feel her own panic and anxiety build up within her as the confusion worsened. The mix of emotions wouldn't ease up on her and Zera could feel terror grow. Why can't I stop? Zera thought to herself as she opened her mouth to speak, but only sobs escaped her.
She felt warm hands cup her face, thumbs brushing against her cheeks, when did Haniel get so close? The warmth tricked over her, slowly, the tears dried up and Haniel pulled her into a tight hug.
"What upset you so?" Haniel's eyes gave away everything. The concern, the kindness, the nurturing energy she seemed to just radiate.
"I..." Zera tried to respond, but she really didn't know. "I don't know...you two were arguing...and..." Her voice trailed off, growing softer and softer with each word.
Haniel frowned and nodded, "I'm sorry cheraikir. Truly, I am." She gently kissed Zera's forehead. "Everything is finer, I promise you. I just don't like to upset your father. He has been through enough."
Zera nodded, "Okay...Archangel Haniel?"
"Cheraikir, I'm your grandmother. No need for such formalities."
Clearing her throat slightly as her confidence began building itself back up, Zera corrected herself. "Grandmother...I'm sorry for my outburst." She kept her eyes low. Humiliation filled her chest for having to apologize, or maybe because of the outburst, or possibly it was both. Whatever it was, Zera absolutely despised it.
Haniel gave her a reassuring smile. "Do not fret."
There was a long awkward pause between the three of them until Zera broke it. "Grandmother, I have a question for you."
"Hm?"
"What is 'cheraikir'? You keep calling me that."
Haniel stared at her, there was a hint of disappointment in her eyes. "Azazel did not teach you Veraiyahkah?" Zera shook her head and Haniel pursed her lips slightly, "Well, it means..." Haniel looked to Seth, "What is it in English again...?"
Seth chuckled lightly, "Child."
Haniel nodded, "Seth, when you take her back, please try and convince Azazel to teach her, please?" This time, there was no hostility in her tone, no irritation or annoyance towards Seth.
"Yes, Archangel Haniel." Seth responded, bowing his head lightly.
Haniel looked back towards Zera and helped her stand again, "Cheraikir, how about a um..." Haniel bit her lip and appeared to be deep in thought. She addressed Seth and did the gesture for small. He stifled a laugh and she glared, Haniel proceeded to scold him in Veraiyahkah. After a bit of back and forth between them, she said, "Kirsha," turning back to Zera, "would you like to go on a small tour before you go home?"
"I would like that." Zera felt a smile tug on the corner of her lips.
Haniel took her hand and led her out of the room, "Seth, come along."
During the tour, "Zera separated herself from her grandmother and uncle. She entered a room and there were endless rows of file cabinets. Her eyes widened at the sight, "I'm not going to have enough time."
Luz's presence was beside her, but just as before it was faint. "Breathe. Just start by deep breaths. Then close your eyes, these are not normal files. You will be okay."
"Luz there's too many-" Footsteps drew closer and she instantly ducked behind some filing cabinets. "They'll find me. They will find me here!"
"Little Colt, listen to my voice, focus on me. Me and only me." Luz spoke softly, beside her, his presence was comforting and more evident. "They have absolutely no reason to suspect you of treachery, they know you have a curious nature. You will be safe; you will be okay. I am in your corner. I will ensure your safety."
"B-but the-the angels-"
"will not harm you, you are family. In order to discover your father's secrets, you must be brave, keep your courage to fan your determination... This is only the first step." Luz assured her. "We are in this together. Now, and always."
"N-no Luz, they'll-they're going to be after me." Zera choked out as panic rose within her again. A mix of her own nerves and something else. Flashbacks went through her mind. The best from her past that hid behind angelic wings, she cried.
Luz continued to speak, but his words became muddled together. Zera couldn't hear him clearly enough; the memories went through her mind like a cinematic film and pushed him aside.
A beast among beasts.
Abomination.
My pet.

Chapter 5: Building Bridges
"Let me take her for the week, I'll be able to keep her from falling behind the other students." Seth sat across from Elijah who seemed to be carefully weighing the options. "I know the materials and I've made great progress with her; Elijah you know I will ensure she does her work."
Elijah nodded slowly, "Fine, but we need to hear back each day."
Seth nodded, Of course, I'll keep her on task, I'll have her call each night."
Elijah then called, "Zera, go pack your things! You'll need a week's worth of clothing!"
   "No!" Zera called back down.
Elijah sighed, "Excuse me Seth." He stood and went up to Zera's room. "Zera, you're staying with Seth during your suspension."
   "Why?"
"Perhaps you'll learn to behave with your instructor."
Zera rolled her eyes, "You pack my bag then since you want me gone."
Elijah tensed and sighed, as he packed, he spoke to her. "I don't want you gone, none of us do. You just aren't leaving us many options."
"Neither are any of you." Zera countered.
Elijah sighed as he rummaged through her closet, "I can't help you if you won't work with us, we just want to keep you safe."
"No, you want me to play along with your rules, Father wants to baby me and turn me into his little pet." Zera hissed, crossing her arms over her chest.
Elijah paused for a moment, closing his eyes as he tried to collect himself. He turned to face her and took her hand in his, "When you are in back in school, you'll come back here."
Zera pulled her arm away from him and walked down the stairs, allowing her eyes to continuously glow red. As she got down, Elijah began to follow her down with a small suitcase. They found Seth being used as a chair by Ace who seemed to be demanding pets from him, "Let's get this week over with." She snarled at Seth and made her way towards the door.
Elijah handed her bag to Seth who gave him a questioning look before following Zera out the door with it. "I'll have her check in Elijah, promise."
"Good luck." Elijah closed the door behind them, Aviana waved to Zera from the window.
Zera met her eyes and frowned, she sadly waved as she entered Seth's car. Once inside, Seth started the car and began driving away. "Quite a show you put on."
Zera blinked her eyes making them return to their natural hue, "If I go willingly, they'll know something is up."
"Well, I'm not carrying your crap anymore."
   Zera giggled, "We'll see."
   "Grandfather, you're spoiled."
"From what I've heard, you're a whore." Zera remarked, "So let's not go into name calling, that's my specialty."
Seth gave her an annoyed glare, "Hey, I'm doing you a favor, don't start with me because I will- "
"Turn this car around, break our deal, and prove to your older brother that you really aren't trustworthy?" Zera smirked, Seth stared at her and groaned. "I know how to play my cards Seth; you tend to pick things up when your father knows how to work his pawns."
Seth grumbled, "You may have your mother's looks, but you are nothing like her."
"Oh, believe me, I am very well aware of that. Now, how are we getting to Heaven? Are you going to sprout wings and fly us up or are we calling for an angel to let us up?"
Seth shook his head, "No and sort of. There is a passageway exclusive to me and the hellhounds. I'm not showing it to you because I like living and I don't feel like getting scolded by my father's wife. First, we are going to drop off your stuff at my apartment and pick something up too."
   "What are you picking up?"
"A family heirloom that was long since lost to Heaven. I was able to find it and plan to bring it back." Seth explained, "Now when we arrive who are you meeting?"
"I am meeting Archangel Haniel," Zera answered, running through all the mental notes she's made about her grandmother.
"Good, you speak only when spoken too. She's a very strict woman, Archangel Haniel is also a very busy woman, she does not like to disrespect and does not take kindly to informalities." Seth reminded as he turned into an apartment complex.
"She sounds like Father." Zera groaned loudly, "Is that why they have a closer connection?"
"One of the reasons, yeah," Seth responded.
"You don't seem to like her very much." She observed, looking at him.
"Since I was a result of a mistake, she isn't my biggest fan. She tries to hide it, but deception is not the strong suit of any archangel. Especially her." Seth answered as he parked, "Archangel Haniel's guilt isn't strong enough to change how she feels about me and my mother, I'm just a reminder of a black mark in her union with my father."
Zera couldn't help but giggle, "Isn't one of the rules of heaven to forgive?"
"Of course, she's forgiven my father, but that doesn't mean she'll ever forget it," Seth responded as they both got out of the car.
"That's lovely, proof that even the archangels are flawed," Zera smirked.
"Well that's just one archangel, not all of them are flawed. In fact, most of them are actually the best they can be as family members." Seth elaborated, a hint of a smile sprouting on his face. "They live for celebration when they can spare a moment from their duties. One time for Azazel's I believe 1,000th birthday there was a weeklong festival with all sorts of activities. Yekah Chamuel had their angels organize a large dance, Aunt Ariel arranged what was basically a huge petting zoo. Then some of the animals got out and instead of helping, Uncle Raphael made it worse by letting all of them get loose! Oh, it was the best, but Archangel Metatron was extremely irritated with him and so was Aunt Ariel." Seth continued as they went up to the stairs, Zera found herself attentively listening to his tale.
She couldn't help but smile, Seth became giddy as he recounted the events of that day. Zera listened to Seth tell how her father was publicly humiliated by his entire family after being forced to parade around with a goat who chased after him. She could feel Luz's presence by her side; her senses slowly began to numb, and sleepiness took hold of her with a rush of warmth licking her skin.
   "Sleep..."
Zera frowned when she heard him, Seth's words became muddled together and started to fade. His voice raised in a questioning tone, but she couldn't understand what he asked. She merely muttered about shutting her eyes for a moment, only to drift off into nothing.
Her eyes fluttered open, Seth was standing over Zera. He seemed frantic, trying to wake her and Zera groaned loudly in protest. "What are you doing?"
"Are you okay? You scared the hell out of me there! Your cheeks turned red and you just passed out! I almost called Elijah."
"I feel fine, I'm just tired." Zera dismissed, rubbing her eyes as she sat up with a yawn. Seth took a step back to give her some breathing room, she looked around. "Where are we?"
"Inside my apartment, Zera has this happened before?"
"Seth, I'm fine. Really." Zera insisted with an annoyed tone.
Seth reluctantly let the subject go, "Fine, but we need to let your dad know."
"All that will cause if my father to hover over me constantly." Zera grumbled, "I don't want to remain isolated from my family any longer. I want to go meet them."
Seth paused, "Okay, okay I get it." Zera smiled, "This happens again though and I will be taking you back to Azazel."
   "Fine." Zera's shoulders slumped slightly.
Seth went into a room and after several minutes he came back out with a black box that had golden plating. There was a label underneath the lid with strange symbols Zera didn't recognize, "What is that?"
"Something you'll see when you're older," Seth smirked at her irritated glare, "our family is an old traditional bunch. They will see you as a child, there is going to be a lot of things they will not tell you. Just be patient, okay?"
   "I'm not a child! I'm-"
"May I remind you, the Archangels have been around since the dawn of time? We're all infants compared to them. I myself am only...well almost 4,000 years old I think." Seth countered. "Now close your eyes, we're going to Heaven and you can't see the passage yet."
   "What? Why?"
"Because, if Azazel finds out you know how to get to Azazel, I'm literally screwed." Zera glared and grumbled angrily as she crossed her arms over her chest and shut her eyes tightly.
Seth chuckled, then hummed a soft melody and the room got warmer. When he finished the song, the sound of chatter filled Zera's ears. "Can I open my eyes now Seth?"
"Yes."

Chapter 4: Leverage
Tumblr media
A week had gone by since Zera visited with her mother, Seth developed a plan to better her behavior in school. They spent lunch periods on worksheets and assessments in exchange for information from Seth about whatever Zera wanted. For the most part, they agreed and got along well regarding their little pact. They were both pleasantly surprised by how much they had in common.
"Zera, you are almost done with the page, come on. Remember the deal."
She groaned loudly, dropping her head on the page that was three quarters completed. "I hate doing this tedious work."
"If you finish it soon, we can get the assessments out of the way. I want to know how to properly tailor the help you require to get further in this system. As much as you don't like it, the humans value their schooling and make it practically a requirement to move forward in their world." Seth responded, drumming his fingers on the desk.
Zera lifted her head to glare at her uncle, then rolled her eyes. "I still don't get it. I don't like this. I'm only participating so I don't have to listen to Father's lectures."
"I'd honestly suggest you care a little more, you'll be able to open the doors so you can have better control of the world."
Zera stayed quiet for a moment, pondering the words prudently for a moment before nodding, "So I finish this, you tell me one thing. Yes?"
"Well, what is it you want to know?"
"I want to get into Heaven."
Seth was clearly caught off guard, "I...I'm sorry, what?"
"You heard me, I want into Heaven."
Seth stared at her, then huffed slightly. "Finishing a page does not equate to sneaking you into Heaven."
"Then what does?"
He opened his mouth then paused for a long moment, "No, nope. We aren't having this conversation, if this gets back to your father, he might-no he will have my head."
Zera giggled and stated, "You're scared of him."
"You seem to forget that he is not just my older brother, but also a well-known archdemon. A respected figure in Hell. In our worlds, both Heaven and Hell, everyone knows all that he is capable of." Seth patiently explained, but Zera was not impressed. "You are the only one who is questionably sane that would openly and readily challenge him."
"I take offense to that!" Zera huffed, "I am very much sane thank you." She then stuck her tongue out at him who rolled his eyes.
"Hun, you related to me, you are partially insane. You can blame genetics." Seth chuckled, smiling at her.
Zera lightened up a bit, giggling and enjoying the moment between her and Seth. Then she could hear Luz's familiar whispers in her ear, "Insist little one, you need to get in."
She cleared her throat as they settled down, "Please...I'd like to at least meet my grandparents, really. I want to go to heaven and meet my family."
Seth bit his lip hesitantly, "This is where I may have to draw the line, our family hasn't been together in eons. I'm sure your father would prefer to be present when you meet your grandparents."
"I didn't realize that he still tells you what to do. I thought you were both grown adults."
"I am a grown adult, and unlike you, I actually look like one." Seth glared, pointing a finger at her. "Little Miss One Hundred and something."
"Touché, however, we do age differently. Who knows how old are you Mr. Dinosaur." Zera giggled, amused by her uncle.
"Well, I'm not going to take you for calling me a dinosaur."
"So, you're going to keep me from meeting my extended family because of a preschool insult and homework?"
Seth sat there in complete disbelief and groaned loudly, "You manipulative little beat."
Zera smirked, "I've learned from the best."
There was something in Seth's eyes that Zera couldn't quite decipher. "Fine, fine. I'll help you get in, but for now, you'll only meet your grandmother."
"Why only her?"
"Azazel will be less angry when he finds out you only met Haniel. There was really no ill will between him and his mother." Seth explained then tapped the page, "Before we start that, you have to finish the packet."
Zera's lip twitched upward in a snarl, but she cleared her throat. "Done." She got to work and quickly completed the packet within about ten minutes, then pushed it toward her uncle who eyed her carefully.
"You had to complete it correctly Zera." He glanced over the first page which had nothing but wrong answers.
"Ah ha...That was not mentioned in the deal before agreeing." She smirked tapping her finger on the table expectantly.
Seth's face turned bright red, he growled. "You sneaky little-"
Zera giggled and cut him off, "Language Uncle Seth~" She then propped her head up with her hand on the table, "A deal is a deal."
He groaned, "Damn you are like your father."
The bell rang and Zera hissed, "Damn it."
"We'll talk later, I promise." Seth then stood and waited by the door as students began to enter.
Zera moves back to her corner seat as the students filed into the classroom and filled in their seats. One boy made his way to sit with the grouchy purple haired girl in the back. "You should smile more."
Zera looked at him, glaring. "You should sew your mouth shut."
He chuckled nervously, taking the seat by her. "You are just the image of a bright sunny day."
"You are the image of a parasite, let's go to the doctors." She spat; Seth eyed her warningly from the door causing her to pout. "Please refrain from distrusting me from the lesson."
"You never pay attention to the lesson."
"I'm trying to change my habits, now if you will." She opened her bag, pulling out a notebook and a fountain pen.
Seth made his way to the center after closing the door, "Welcome back class, please leave the energy from lunch outside." He waited for the chatter to settle down before beginning to explain persuasive essays. None to subtly, he glanced at Zera, "With persuasive essays, you must clearly explain the points for whatever the argument may be."
Zera couldn't help but giggle, and the boy feigned a gasp.
"Holy shit, she laughs." He whispered with a smirk, "Her smile is pretty too."
Almost immediately, Zera snarled and flashed her fangs at him. "Shut up, Janice."
He almost fell back on to the floor with a small yelp, "What the-!"
"Jordan! Zera! Must I separate you two?" Seth snapped, slamming a book on to his desk.
The boy returned to his seat nervously, "N-no Mr. Smith."
"Yes Mr. Smith, please move this twat from my space." Zera hissed and Seth's eye visibly twitched.
The students began to whisper and giggle quietly, "Zera, Jordan. Principal's office, thank you." He pointed to the door, she glared and stood. "No snarky remarks please Miss Blackwell, go on, the both of you."
Jordan stood and they both made their way to the door, Zera paused in the doorway. She looked at the teacher and ever so politely flipped him the bird. His face began to resemble a tomato, she finally left for the principal's office in a chorus of oohs from her peers.
Jordan looked at Zera, "Do you have to piss off everyone you meet?"
"Do you have to pester all of your classmates?"
"Only the interesting ones."
Zera rolled her eyes, "What is it exactly that makes me interesting then?"
"Where you come from."
"So, it isn't anything I've done that makes me interesting, it's only my background? You're interesting because of your stupidity." She glared at him.
"Your background makes up who you are."
"My background has nothing to do with me." She snapped.
"You're a real piece a work." Jordan huffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I would hope so; Rome wasn't built in a day. It's taken me a lot to be who I am." She walked off.
"Wait, the principal's office is this way!"
"I'm going to the lady's room first, 'less they want to up my piss." She lied, quickly losing him as she walked down the hall.
As she turned the corner to make her way towards the school exit, Luz's voice chirped into her ear, "Young lady, turn right around and march right back in there."
"What? Why?" Zera stopped at the large double doors leading to her freedom from this makeshift hell.
"Don't take your punishment for something small. If you get in trouble, make it worth getting punished for dearie."
Zera smirked and turned around, "Luz, I love you." She giggled as she made her way towards the chemistry lab, her eyes flashed a mischievous red in her reflection of the window.
"Now, where to little lamb?"
"This place is a figurative hell, I'm going to create a little chaos~" She tried to open the door, but found it to be locked. Zera growled and her eyes turned bright red while she kept her hand on the handle. There was a click and she pushed the door wide open.
"Atta' girl." Luz chuckled, Zera smirked and she produced a small flame in her hand. She stood on a table and put her hand towards one of the sprinklers in the ceiling. Once the fire alarm went off, she made her way out of the lab and blended into the crowd of students being escorted outside.
Once outside, Zera was able to speak off away from the students and faculty and left the campus. She began walking towards a plaza just a couple of blocks from the school. Humming as she arrived, she looked around seeing an interesting looking tattoo parlor next to a rather plain looking shop. She made a mental note to remember the tattoo parlor, then continue to look around until she saw a small coffee shop.
Zera began to walk closer when Luz spoke up, "Darling, you seem to have forgotten your bag at school."
"Luz. I have a nifty little invention called pockets, perhaps you've heard of them? They're mini bags inside your clothes." Zera remarked.
Luz chuckled and left her alone, as Zera reached for the door handle to enter the little coffee shop a pale hand grabbed her wrist gently. "Zera Blackwell, you are in extreme trouble."
Zera groaned loudly, looking up at Elijah, "How'd you find me?"
"The real question is; what on Earth were you thinking? Seth called me, telling me you've disappeared after the fire alarm was set off." Elijah took her hand and began walking away. "Of all the things, I've never thought you would have done something so irresponsibly stupid."
"I cannot believe you all thought it would be good to put me in a school full of idiotic, hormonal, and pathetic human infants." Zera snapped back.
"Lower your voice!" Elijah hissed at her, tugging her along. "Why are you behaving like this?"
Zera looked at Elijah deadpanned, "Just take me home Elijah, it seems my fun is done for the day."
Elijah stared at her in disbelief, then tugged her along towards the front door. They both walked in silence as they entered the home and were greeted by their overexcited hellhound, Ace. Elijah pulled out his phone and dialed a number as Zera started for the stairs. "Seth, I've found her. Yes, she's here with me, we're home." He paused and Zera glanced back curiously. "Very well, you can come by after school."
Zera pet Ace then went to her room and closed the door behind them, the hellhound made a beeline for her bed and Zera giggled. "Leave me some room goofball."
Ace barked back at her as she grabbed a book from her desk and sat beside Ace. She opened to the bookmarked page and stared, waiting for Luz to pipe up, but he did not surface. As time passed, she grew agitated and growled at the book.
There was a sudden knock, Zera put the book away as the door opened revealing Seth. "What the hell were you thinking?"
"What?"
"You are now suspended from school for a week, why did you set off the alarms?" Seth scolded, closing the door behind him.
"You didn't take my request seriously." Zera glared, Ace jumped up eagerly to greet Seth who merely waved him off.
"About you and Jordan? What was going on there?" Seth crossed his arms over his chest, tapping his foot expectantly.
"I'll kill him next time I see him, that's what." Zer a hissed, her uncle sighed.
"You acted out because you didn't like him?"
"He's a pest, vermin, a parasite that sucks out my patience."
"You had patience to begin with?"
Zera glared at him, "So I'm off school for a week then?"
"Yes, Elijah and Azazel are livid."
"Like I care, when will we prepare to go then? We do have a deal after all." Zera leaned forward, smirking, keeping her voice low.
Seth's eyes widened and he groaned loudly, "You clever little-..."

Chapter 3: Seeing a Ghost
Opening her eyes, she was sitting in a clearing in front of her mother. Unlike Zera, Marnie's purple hair fell in curls framing her face, her blue eyes ironically shining with life. Marnie cupped Zera's face, giving her a warm smile. "Ça va Colombe?"
"Fine Mother, but I do have questions..."
Marnie smiled and nodded, patting the spot beside her, "Of course Colombe." Zera giggled lightly and moved to sit next to her mother who began to braid her hair. "First...tell me, darling. How have you been? How has your father been treating you? Not too harshly I hope."
"No Maman, he just hasn't been too forthcoming with answers I'd like. Per usual..." Zera pouted and her mother giggled.
"Your father is a stubborn man; it takes time to peel back the layers for him to open up. Be patient...it is a virtue after all."
Zera scoffed, "When have you known me to virtuous Maman?"
"Come now Colombe, things would be much easier for you. If only you were a bit less like your father." Marnie reached over to push Zera's hair out of her face and back into the braid.
Zera looked at their surroundings, they sat on a beach looking out at a beautiful sunset. "I'll be honest, we just can't see the beauty in things like you do Mother..."
At this, Marnie was silent for a long moment, "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you..."
Zera gave a weak laugh, "You can't be blamed for being dead. There was never anything you could have done."
Marnie gently kissed the crown of her daughter's head, lingering for a moment before finishing off the braid. "I wish you weren't so pessimistic...you get it from your father."
"There are many things I get from him." Zera pointed out as she turned to face her mother who had a sad smile on her face.
"That there are, but I love you both even if you two drive me crazy." Marnie giggled softly, cupping her daughter's face as she stared at her eyes. "You two always push each other too far, if only I was beside you both..."
"You are Maman," Zera's gaze softened as she looked at her mother. "You are always with us, in my heart and with Father's. At least I think he has one."
Marnie laughed as she embraced her tightly, hiding her head in Zera's hair, closing her eyes and enjoying the moment. "I am so blessed to have such an amazing family..."
Zera smiled up at Marnie and shook her head, "Father's lucky he was able to love you. I'm lucky to have been able to meet you, even if it's like this." Zera leaned against her, then looked up at the starry sky. "You really like sunsets, don't you?"
Marnie giggled and nodded, "Yes I do, they're beautiful. What's the word used now? Cliché? I know it's a cliché, but just look at the view."
The two stared at the starlit sky and smiled at its loveliness, Zera would be lying if she didn't admit the stars were calming. "It is beautiful...Father did a good job with this place."
"Your father knows me well." There was a longing in her eyes, a distant look on her face as she stared off into the colorful sky. "Colombe?"
"Yes, Mother?"
"Even though I'm not around. Promise to help keep your father on the right path. I'm not fully around, and half the time he forgets that I'm real. He doesn't always listen to me." Zera looked at her, "I shouldn't be asking this of you, but he really doesn't have anyone else...he won't listen to Elijah. Especially not to Aviana, the poor thing."
Zera looked curiously towards Marnie, "What do you mean by that?"
Marnie frowned, "I'm sorry Colombe... Aviana is someone who your father took in. It was a request I convinced him to fulfill. She's unfortunately always been pushed to the side by Azazel, despite my efforts."
"Her family gave her up?"
At this, Marnie paused and tilted her head from side to side thoughtfully, "Yes, the family did have moments where they were cruel."
Zera nodded, biting her lip before asking, "You have met Aviana's family, but what about Father's? Did he ever talk about them?"
"I actually did meet some of his family, not everyone though."
"Then what were they like?"
Marnie hummed softly for a moment, "Well, his mother was a very kind woman, Seth was funny, but I never met his father. His mother thought it for the best until a later date, which never came."
"Why is that?"
"Our union was never to be blessed, my parents long deceased and many of the archangels did not approve. He wanted to elope, but I insisted that we stay. He had duties to his family, and I was not going to be the reason he ran from it all." Marnie explained as she gently ran a hand through Zera's hair, pulling her in for a hug. "I hold no ill will towards them, they are a traditional bunch. Humans and angels were never even thought of to come together in such a manner."
Zera shook her head, "You never cease to surprise me, mother."
"Why is that Colombe?"
"Your kindness knows no bounds; Father is petty even if he won't admit it. Then there's you, always forgiving towards others." She explained, looking up at her mother who smiled.
"That is why your father and I matched so well; I was always able to reign him in. Even now that he pretends to be some wild beast, he has me chirping in his ear to bring him back down." Marnie replied.
"Mother?"
"Yes?"
"Do you know what Heaven is like?"
There was a long silence, "No, I don't. I remain by your father's side, I always have."
"Do you ever want to go to Heaven?"
Marnie hesitated before answering, "No...No I would rather be here, with you and your father."
Zera frowned deeply, "I never pegged you as a liar Maman."
"I love your father Colombe...I just wish that things would be easier, for all of our sakes..." Marnie sighed, closing her eyes. Zera shook her head, taking her mother's hand in both of her own. "You don't need to be exposed to all this..."
"We cannot change the past, what is done is done Maman." Zera looked up at her, offering a reassuring smile, despite heavy air lingering between them. "I love you Maman..."
"Et je t'aime aussi ma petite Colombe. » She smiled sadly, pulling her daughter in for a hug. She hummed a soft melody that easing the tension that hung between them, Zera could feel herself practically melt into her Mother's hold.
"Maman?"
"Oui?"
"Do you know if Father ever mentioned someone named Madeline?"
Marnie tensed up at this, her face written with a deep sadness that instantly caused her eyes to well up with tears. She covered mouth, muffling a sob as she slowly shook her head. "I'm... I'm sorry. I..." She choked out before burying her face in her hands.
Zera completely caught off guard from this sudden change in her mother's demeanor. "Mother? What's wrong?" She gripped Marnie's shoulders who immediately pulled away. Their surroundings began to blur and fade to black as Zera continued to cry out to her distraught mother began to say something she couldn't hear.
Zera awoke with a start, she looked around frantically seeing Ace clearly upset by the sudden and rude awakening. Shakily, she pulled Ace into a tight hug and let out a deep breath. After calming her nerves, she got up and checked the time. "3 a.m., of course."
Ace then hopped off the bed and vanished in a burst of flames mid-air. She pouted, "Fine then, leave." Zera got out of bed and put on a silk mauve robe. She left her room and walked down the stairs, making her way to the kitchen and opened the fridge.
"Grabbing a midnight snack?" Aviana opened her piercing jade eyes, slit irises larger than usual.
Zera looked up from the fridge to find her friend sitting on the counter with one leg over the other. "Mhmm... I couldn't really sleep, then I began to feel a bit peckish."
"I thought you were spending time with your Mother?" Aviana tilted her head curiously.
The younger nodded and closed the fridge, looking to Aviana. "Yes, but Ace decided to wake me up before he left, I love him but not his habits."
Aviana's lips twitched in annoyance at the mention of Ace, Zera pouted slightly. "So, Ace went hunting then?"
"I believe so, otherwise I will not be letting him into my room for a week."
Aviana got down from the counter and untied her ponytail, "You don't have school, tomorrow right?"
"You are correct."
"Then let's watch some TV. We could watch a movie to pass the rest of the night." Aviana suggested as she began to braid her hair, smiling down at Zera.
"Only if you let me ask you a couple of questions."
The brunette eyed her curiously, "Okay, I'll bite. Can I ask what prompted interrogation?"
Zera giggled, "I was talking with Mother, she mentioned a bit of your family. Did you happen to know or ever meet them?"
Aviana finished braiding her hair as they made their way to the living room, "No. I haven't met my family, but that's not uncommon among us. You are more of a special case in that area, Zera."
"Demons don't normally know their parents? They're family history?"
Aviana shook her head as she took her seat on the coffee table, "When demons are young, they are essentially thrown to the wolves. Some rare cases, higher ranking demons will keep their young close without actually hindering their growth."
Zera grabbed the control and started searching for a movie, "What do you mean by hindering?"
"It is believed when you are too involved with a baby's growth, it's believed that they will be weaker. Bloodline really matters very little to our kind, but you are an exception." Aviana elaborated, Zera looked over to her friend. "Your father and your mother had a union that is rare."
"Because of the different races?"
"The only bloodlines that matter are those of the original families, such as Lucifer and those within his close circle." Aviana elaborated.
"Yes."
"Much like the humans back in the 1900s, no?"
"Exactly so. However, not to the same extent. Demons ridicule but do not behave so violently, it's seen more like a waste of time." Aviana replied as she stretched her arms upward. Zera nodded and leaned against Aviana as they settled down in front of the TV.
"Aviana?"
"Yes?"
"If I come to you for answers regarding anything my father is hiding from me, can I count on you to help me?"
A long pause before Aviana responded in barely a whisper, "I cannot promise that..."
Zera was hurt and disappointed, but she expected it. "Father takes you for granted Aviana." They passed the night in silence, watching the movie marathon playing on the screen until the early hours of dawn.

Chapter 2: Further Down the Demon’s Path
No Art Today, I started feeling sick so I couldn't focus on a matching drawing with this chapter. Hope you enjoy it though!
Thank you and hope you stick around!
A week had passed since Seth introduced himself to Zera, she was refusing to speak with her father and Elijah while Seth gave them all space. Instead of talking about the problem, she spent most of her time trying to do research on her father's side of the family with Luz's help. Sitting on her desk, she had a pile of books on the archangels and the way Heaven is organized.
"How do I know this is accurate? Isn't this just how humans believe it to work?" She questioned, resting her cheek on her palm, trying to read a particularly large book that was about five inches thick with a red cover. Needless to say, she was dying.
"Yes but remember that humans spread information after encountering it. There is always a match that lights the fire child." Luz chuckled, clearly amused by Zera's exasperation.
"Why can't you just tell me about it?"
"My knowledge of Heaven and it's inner workings are... a bit out of date to say the least. Only those who inhabit it know how it functions as of late." He explained patiently, causing Zera to drop her head on the book and groan loudly. "I have a question for you, little one."
"What is your question annoying one?" She grumbled, instantly her body tensed, and she covered her mouth, though Zera couldn't tell why. She ignored the sudden fear that rose within her and sat up straight, waiting for Luz to continue.
He seemed to ignore the comment either way, "Why is it that you are struggling so much with this simple task? Reading isn't everyone's favorite thing to do, but it isn't so difficult. Did they never finish teaching you?"
Zera was quiet for a while, hesitant to answer at first. "The man who raised me did not think I needed to. The servants tried to, but most of them didn't know either. Elijah tried to, but Father got impatient with my progress, so I quit trying."
Luz paused as he considered her answer, "Would you like to learn? I promise I can make it painless."
"Do I really need to?"
"Says the one who has piles of books that you need in order to progress at all in your goal." Luz pointed out and Zera growled at him. "I am only pointing out the facts. To move forward in life, not just this journey, you must gain all the skills you can. The more you know, the easier it will be to trample those under you. Besides, I'm getting tired of doing all the reading."
Zera frowned, "Fine. How long will it take for me to learn?"
"That is a much better attitude, we'll start with English and I'll look for something to speed up the process for you. Then, I'll teach you your father's native tongue. You'll benefit from knowing it, the archangels prefer it to any human language."
She tilted her head thinking about his offer and smirked, "Then I'll be able to understand anything they may try to hide from me." She giggled as she drummed her fingers on the book, "Luz you are the best."
"You are very sweet child."
"Alright, enough of that. I have a name, use it." She scolded.
"Very well little Colt."
Zera growled and huffed, "That's better I suppose." Luz chuckled lightly, there was a knock on the door. With that Luz's presence disappeared and Zera closed the books, with a wave of her hand she placed an illusion to make her desk appear empty. "Come in."
The door creaked open and Aviana poked her head in, "I'm back."
Zera turned and smiled wide, "Avi!" She rushed over and gave her a tight hug. "How was the trip?"
"Successful, and I took plenty of pictures for you." She smiled at the younger friend and handed her a camera.
Zera nearly screeched in excitement, "Thank you Avi! It's great having you back, Father and Elijah have been unbearable without you."
"I'm sure you three just need to talk over whatever the issue is." Aviana offered a reassuring smile. "You and Azazel both can be pushy and aggressive, even Elijah has his moments."
Zera frowned, "Aviana, we tried talking already, didn't work."
"Well, who was the mediator?" Aviana crossed her arms over her chest, watching the younger skeptically.
Zera bit her lip and shifted from one foot to the other, "Well...we had Seth."
Aviana hugged herself tightly, "S-Seth? How did...w-when did Azazel introduce you? Or was that the issue?"
"You know him." Zera rested her hands on her hips, scowling at Aviana, "You hid that too." She hissed with an accusatory tone.
Aviana nervously nodded, "Milady-Zera, there is a lot of complex history within your family. You need to be eased into it..."
Zera moved behind her and shut the door, locking it. "Sit down, on the bed. We are talking." She growled out, pointing to the bed, Aviana obeyed. Zera sat at her chair, crossing one leg over the other. "Avi."
"Yes?"
"You are my best friend, you have been with me from the beginning. You have heard when my father insisted it was only me and him. Why did you say nothing?" The disappointment was heavy in Zera's words as she felt the stab of betrayal from her only friend.
Guilt clear on Aviana's face as her gaze fell on to the floor. "Marnie's line died with her before she met with your father." As she continued to speak, her voice softened, "He wasn't technically lying, his father disowned him, for a long while it was just Azazel. Then..." Aviana pursed her lips, "Azazel means well for you, he really does."
Zera sighed and leaned back in her seat, "That may be so, but I want answers; I deserve answers."
"You aren't wrong, but these things take time." Aviana appeared to relax her shoulders as the tension between them faded.
"He's had over a century." Zera spat, glaring at her.
Aviana tilted her head from one side to the another, "Fair, but good things come to those who wait."
Zera groaned loudly, "Fine, Fine! You win that debate." She pouted, "Avi? Can you answer my questions?"
Aviana appeared to think this question carefully, "I can try."
"Father and Seth spoke in a different language, they said it was the angel's tongue... do you know it?"
She shook her head, "Only those from heavenly descent can learn it. So I never bothered to try and learn it."
Zera huffed, "Damn...Why is that?"
"Only those who have any connection to the angels can learn it. Outside of Heaven's occupants, no one else speaks it. Except for the fallen angels, and the few demons who originate from Heaven." Aviana explained.
"So it isn't because there's a hereditary thing, it's just that the language is closely guarded?" Zera clarified and Aviana nodded. "Okay, well what do you know about Heaven?"
"Not much...very few demons know anything about it. The archdemons and those within the Devil's circle are the only ones with the slightest clue." Aviana explained, frowning at Zera.
"What do you know about Seth?"
"He's an incubus, his mom is the first demon ever created, Lilith." Aviana began, tapping a finger on her leg. "He is the first male demon created, he is the first natural-born demon."
"He seemed very attached to their father based on how he talked about Azrael," Zera mentioned to Aviana who nodded.
"Seth from what I've heard and seen admires him truly. He and Sarah both loved him, they all did at one point. Azrael did favor Sarah over the boys, but it's likely because she's a bit of a daddy's girl." She elaborated, clearly thinking back.
"Wait, who's Sarah?" Zera held a hand out to Aviana, furrowing her brows.
"Oh, right." Aviana smiled sheepishly, "Getting a little ahead of myself. Sarah is Azazel's little sister; she and Seth are...how do I explain this?" She chewed her bottom lip thoughtfully, "They are much like Azazel and Elijah, but they are two completely different people. Two souls who both occupy one body."
Zera blinked, then nodded. "So, there are two sides to Seth?" Aviana nodded, "So...there isn't just an uncle I didn't know about, but an aunt as well?" She nodded again, and Zera took a moment to fully process the new information.
Aviana stood, "I need to go check in with Elijah now, I'm sure he's done inspecting his precious little Ace now."
Zera nodded, "I've got to wrap up a couple of things too; send Ace up here when Elijah and Father are done with him please."
"Will do." Aviana walked to the door and shut it behind her.
Zera looked back at her desk and let the illusion fall and she took a seat. After about five minutes of staring at the book piles, then she shook her head. "You know what? No, I am not doing this right now." She stood back up and moved the books into her closet.
She made her way down to find Elijah who was standing beside a rottweiler covered in flames. Looking up, the flames died down rapidly and the dog ran for Zera, "Ace!" She sat with him and pet him as the dog happily licked her face. "Oh, you precious boy, I missed you!" She giggled and he nuzzled her, then Zera looked to Elijah. "Elijah."
"Oh? Are you speaking to us now?"
"Only to say that I would like to see Mother. I'll be going to bed early to do so, thank you." Zera stood and walked back to her room before he could respond, Ace close on her heels.
She walked into the room, closing the door behind Ace who then followed her on to the bed. Zera got comfy under the covers and Ace curled up by her feet. "Ace, stay with me..." She then laid down and let her eyes flutter shut waiting for sleep to take her.

Chapter 1: Crashing Reality Part 2
Tumblr media
Awaking with a start, Zera covered her mouth to muffle her scream. Then she took a moment to try to calm herself, successfully doing so. Realizing she had been crying, Zera wiped her eyes with shaky hands. Her mind was foggy, disoriented, Zera looked from herself to her surroundings to find that she was in the same clothes from classes today and in confusion she looked around to see where she was.
Zera was in her room, she took a pained deep breath, her lungs feeling like they were on fire. Slowly regaining her composure, she took in the comfort of being in her own home. The white walls of her room reflected the sunset shining in through her large windows, her silver sheets slightly messy from her tossing and turning. She tried to think back to her nightmare but could not recall it for the life of her. The only thing that came to mind was amber eyes.
Shaking her head, she focused on her surroundings. Zera sensed her best friend's presence as well as Elijah's. However, she noticed there was someone else in the house, Zera dragged herself out of bed, smoothing out her school uniform. She then walked to the stairs; halfway down she could hear Azazel blowing up on, Zera assumed, his younger brother.
"You irresponsible, annoying little pest!" Azazel screeched at Seth, Zera quietly walked down the stairs, stopping at the door frame of the room. Carefully she peaked in, the supposed adults too busy arguing to notice her snooping. Just as Zera peered in, Azazel had punched Seth square in the jaw, throwing the younger on the floor who then spit out blood.
"Are you done?" Seth hissed angrily, eyes flashing crimson.
Azazel growled and pulled on his jacket to smooth it out, "Now. I am done." His lavender eyes were once again that ice cold blue.
"Good." Seth stood as he wiped the blood from his mouth, "She has a right to know, she isn't a child anymore Azazel." Seth then picked himself up, only a couple inches shorter than his older brother.
"She is my daughter and I will decide when and if she needs to know anything about those-those-" Azazel growled and took a deep breath. "Seth, I am trying very hard to keep my calm."
"She is my niece, and she wants to know everything you are hiding from her. I see it every day, she's constantly distracted, and I've been watching how she behaves towards others."
"Yes, I can see how she speaks to Elijah. We are working on that, but she is none of your concern."
Family is my concern Azazel, you can't keep shutting me out." Seth pleaded, "I just want her to know who she is, where she comes from! She deserves to know!"
"You're playing the same tune Seth, it's getting old. You don't care, you only care about yourself, not the well-being of others. Even if you did, you are only her uncle, I am her father. Her welfare is my responsibility not yours." After this, Azazel began to speak in a foreign tongue, one Zera did not recognize.
They continued to argue in this strange language she had never heard before, and Zera let it continue for a good several minutes before she had enough. Zera walked in and stayed in the doorway, "Father, Seth."
"Zera, you should not be up and about, you need to rest." Azazel huffed as he walked to his daughter who did not budge from the doorway.
"I feel fine, what language was that you were speaking in?" She crossed her arms over her chest, leaning on the door frame.
"Don't fret," Azazel began, but Seth continued.
"Your family's native tongue, the language of angels, it is called Veraiyaka."
She stared blankly at the two, "Why do you know it? You were born a demon, weren't you?" Zera directly asked Seth who merely chuckled.
"I was, but the demon's language wasn't used in heaven. I only ever knew my father's language, I never truly knew my mother's heritage." Seth explained patiently, a hint of delight in his eyes.
Zera nodded slightly, "So they tried to erase your heritage?"
Azazel snickered and hid his mouth with his hand while Seth stayed quiet, a frown growing on his face. He stuttered before clearing his throat to answer, "N-no, no they didn't. Father just..." Seth's voice trailed off, uncertainty in his eyes as the gears seemed to turn in his mind.
"Father just what little brother?" Azazel pressed, smirking deviously. "Why was it that you only knew Veraiyaka? Why you never met Lilith? Why was I the one who had to teach you Raiwadahkre? Or even how to tame your hunger?"
Seth visibly tensed up, "Father was always busy Azazel, you know this. Besides, none of them were familiar with the demons' culture."
"You have always made excuses for him, for the love of- just open your damn eyes Seth!" Azazel snapped, throwing his hands in the air, exasperated.
The green-eyed male began to tear up, clearly trying to calm himself. Zera found the whole interaction between the brothers' confusion and irritating. Azazel wasn't letting up on his little brother, and Seth was just an emotional wreck waiting to explode. She wasn't sure how to keep his walls from crumbling and didn't know how to diffuse the situation. Zera was more comfortable escalating but didn't want to deal with the consequences of doing so.
"Azazel..." Seth's voice was soft and wavered a touch, "Brother, why do you do this? I just want us all together. To put the past behind and start fresh... What is so wrong about doing that"
Azazel's face was void of expression as he spoke in a calm and even tone, "My wife is dead." His eyes turning from lavender to ice cold blue, at this Seth had frozen up. "Mrai sharaiz pehtekwarya Seth."
"May I remind you both that I do not speak that gibberish." Zera chimed in, tapping her foot on the ground impatiently.
Seth cleared his throat, looking from Zera to Azazel, "Should I translate or you?"
Azazel hissed at Seth, "I merely told him I protect my own."
"How truthful was he being there?" Zera asked her uncle who seemed pleased by his answer.
"For the most part, accurate translation."
Zera watched them for a long while before she was satisfied, "Fine, now why don't we keep to English? I'd prefer you to be straightforward. If you hide things from me, I promise I will find out the truth."
"There is nothing to discuss Zera." Azazel shook his head, his lavender eyes showing now tired he was. It was a strange sight for Zera, seeing her father this vulnerable. "Seth was just on his way out, right little brother?"
Seth stared at Azazel for a long while, when Zera was about to say something he spoke up, "No. I'm not leaving, I want to talk, I want to just work things out."
The older male glared, "I'm not talking anymore." With that in Azazel's place was Elijah.
Elijah took his jacket off and set it down on the couch, glaring at his alter's brother. "Seth."
"Bro-"
"I. Am not your brother Seth, Azazel is. Not me." He pointed a finger at Seth, "Now, Azazel does not want you here. Zera is not ready to hear whatever it is you have to say, respect her father's wishes."
"I don't believe you are the one to determine that Elijah." Zera hissed at her guardian, who took a step back. "Not you and not Father. The both of you are withholding information from me, cheating me out of my humanity."
Elijah tensed, Seth stared at them in disbelief, "I'm sorry, they what?"
"I made a deal with Father and Elijah to help me get revenge on my adoptive father and figure out my origins." Zera explained, her eyes never leaving Elijah. "Supposedly, the contract was completed long ago. However, with everything you've informed me with now it appears that I have been deceived. Although, what should I have expected from a pair of demons?"
"So Azazel and Elijah..." He turned to the white-haired male. "You two took her humanity?" Seth's shoulders slumped, "What the fuck were you thinking?"
"I don't believe that is your place." Elijah huffed, visibly uneasy.
"I'm really wondering what kind of parenting you are doing, I can not believe you!" Seth screeched, he looked at Zera, then back at Elijah. "What would Marnie think of this?"
"She doesn't agree either, but it's all done. Nothing changes what has passed. However, we can attempt to amend those mistakes by telling me the information that I am due." Zera snarled at Elijah.
"Okay we need a breather, need to take a break." Seth stood between the two, he looked at Elijah. "You and Azazel need to stop and look at this whole mess." He then looked at Zera, "You need to think about the way you go about things."
"We are done here, really. Seth. Leave." Elijah demanded, for the first time, Elijah seemed visibly shaken.
"I'll leave, as soon as you two take some time to cool down. Elijah you have to see that this is not healthy and not good for any of you." Seth put a hand on Elijah's shoulder, Zera watched as for the first time Elijah looked completely helpless. It was an unnerving sight, one she did not like. "Elijah really look at this, look where you guys are. Marnie never wanted this, she never wanted you and Azazel to do all this."
Elijah glared, "Don't. Don't use her name. Do not dare. You have no right to use her name."
"Elijah, you're overreacting, Mother is dead, she has been for over a hundred years. It is long past time to move on." Zera huffed loudly, "Mother, I'm sure, is turning over in her grave listening to you both."
"Young lady, watch your tone." Elijah was shaking.
"She was human, humans die. They live short lives, she was going to die no matter what." Zera snapped, "Why are you lashing out at him for talking about her?"
"She is dead because of them!" Elijah began to raise his voice, then covered his mouth.
"What do you mean?" Zera eyed him closely, growling. "John told me she died from giving birth to me, if there is anyone you should blame for her death it is me. Just as John did. Unless there is something you are not telling me."
Seth was at a loss for words, before he could say anything Elijah spat in Raiwadahkre, "Karwajeh chesah ena, tahkreth chesah cha."
"Rai jehkar Elijah." Seth sneered, causing Zera to almost explode.
"What is he lying about then? How did she die?" She screamed at them.
Elijah shook his head, "No." He stood his ground, though Zera could see just one push and he could topple, "Seth...I am begging you..." His eyes watered even as he tried to keep his expression firm, "I am begging you to leave."
There was a long pause between the three parties, a long time passed before Seth broke the silence. "Fine, I'll go. I'll leave for now, but I will not give up on this family." He turned and faced Zera, "I'll see you in school, and I do expect you to do the homework, no excuses."
Before Zera could respond, Seth vanished and she groaned loudly, "I hate
"Zera..." Elijah began, but his voice trailed off.
"Elijah, for the time being, I want nothing to do with you or with Father." She then turned and walked off, leaving Elijah in stunned silence.
Zera made her way over to the backyard, closing the door behind her. She took a deep breath and sat down on the stone steps.
Birds sang in the trees at the edge of the yard, the breeze was light and warm. Sun beamed down on Zera's pale skin and she closed her eyes, taking in the surroundings. With each deep breath, Zera could feel the overwhelming negative emotions slowly subside. The peace did not last long, her thoughts found their way back to Elijah and her father's betrayal. Growling, shadows began to surround her, and a familiar voice chimed in her ear, "Child, if you dwell on this, you'll give them power. Clear you mind in order to keep your eye on the prize."
Looking around, Zera did not see who the voice belonged to, "Who was that?"
"I'm hurt, you've forgotten me already? When you come to me for assistance in finding the truth behind your father's web of lies?" Listening to the disembodied voice, Zera felt a sense of relief overcome.
It seemed like a light bulb went off in Zera, "Luz."
"Correct." He cooed, and it felt like he was practically breathing against her ear, "You did so well with your father and your uncle."
"It wasn't enough." She grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest, angrily glaring at the grass. The shadows once surrounding her began to recede back into her being and appeared to vanish from sight.
"Give yourself a little more credit, you gained quite a bit of information. Now you need to pull back just a touch, if you dig too deep too fast, then you will set yourself back ten steps." The voice acknowledged and reassured her, Zera let out an irritated sigh. "I understand how difficult it is to be patient, but you must wait. Bide your time then you can get a bigger payout little one."
Zera thought it over for a long moment, "Fine. What plan do you have Luz?"
"The goal is to get you the history that you have been denied, to retrieve the full story we must find Madeline. In order to find Madeline, we must get you into Heaven's record room. That may have hints towards her last known location, considering they do so love to keep tabs on everyone. Only one slight problem."
She sighed, "And pray tell what that problem might be?"
"We need to get you past Archangel Metatron, the scribe of Heaven. He will be guarding it closely; however, if we get past him, we can find the key to answering your mysterious family history."
Zera mulled this information over for a long while before nodding slowly, she had already killed an angel, how much more difficult would an archangel be? "Very well, how do we get into Heaven?"

Crashing Reality Part 1
Tumblr media
Another day at school and Zera absolutely despised it, she kept to herself in the back corner of the classroom. She was bored out of her mind; her father having made her leave her daggers at their home. Aviana stayed at home in order to do some chores for Elijah. The young girl sitting in her homeroom class resembled more a twelve-year-old but looks are deceptive. Her eyes a pastel blue, her purple hair much like her mother's, framing her pasty skin. She was out of place in her class, it was clear to most that she did not belong.
A transfer student who joined earlier in the school year, still not having found friends or a group to fit in with. The other students weren't fond of her attitude, and she was not fond of humans in the slightest. Zera's patience was constantly tested with the pathetic things, though she had to give them credit. They knew well that she was not one of them and they did not try to pass the boundaries she set, it was something she admired. They knew their place, deep inside their roots, they knew when a higher being was among them. Zera began to realize that her attention had wandered from the class once again, she grumbled but did not bother to start paying attention now.
Her gaze found the window as her teacher droned on and on about whatever the lecture was supposed to revolve around. It was a cloudy day that seemed to drain the color out of everything. "How dull..." Zera muttered under her breath, drumming her fingers on the desk. She shut her eyes, an image flashed in her mind, it was the angel she wanted to forget for so long. Their faces contorted in a deformed pained silent scream.
Shaking her head, Zera brought herself back and opened her eyes. It took a minute for her to realize the dead silence that was taking place in the classroom. Her teacher cleared his throat, arms crossed over his chest as he looked down at her. "Zera...care to answer the question?"
Zera scowled at him, "No."
His eye twitched, and Mr. Smith pushed his glasses up slightly. "Let me try that again... Answer the question." He then pointed to the board, on it were the familiar scribbles that were words of the English language.
Zera stopped trying to make sense of them long ago, she merely sat back in her seat. "Bite me." She stated with a smirk, further infuriating her teacher.
With that, the bell rang, and students rushed out of the room, abandoning Zera to the wrath of Mr. Smith. "Zera, I'm calling your parents. I have had it with your attitude, your lack of participation, you don't even try to do the work."
Zera giggled, "I don't have parents, I have a guardian. Though please do, I'm so terrified." She said sarcastically, looking at the adult. Her eyes flashed red, Mr. Smith then shook his head.
"Miss Blackwell. I am not going to tolerate such attitude, you are not some big bad monster." His gaze softened, a frown tugging at the corner of his lips. "Look...if there is something going on at home, you can tell me." He pulled a seat over and sat down in front of her, "Is there a reason why you behave in such a manner?"
Zera stared at the man in disbelief, Did he just not see? He must have thought it was merely a trick of the light. She then shook her head slowly, "No. There isn't anything going on at home." She huffed loudly, irritation taking hold of her as she bared her teeth just slightly.
The teacher stared at her for a long moment before speaking, "Zera. I'd like to talk with you more once the day is through. I'd also like to speak with your par-excuse me, your guardian." He tapped his foot on the floor waiting for a response, Zera merely rolled her eyes.
"Perhaps you'd like me to have this conversation in front of the class? I'm sure that they would love to hear that a fellow classmate is not like them." He pushed, eyes narrowing at her.
Zera eyed him suspiciously, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I can give you the support you need if you work with me outside of class; however, if you don't then I can talk with your guardian about considering evaluations to see if you'd benefit from the special education that is offered. I'd prefer not to because children can be especially cruel things, bullying others." He stated matter-of-factly, at this Zera's eyes narrowed at her teacher.
"That almost sounds like a half-assed attempt at a threat." She leaned in slightly, digging claws into her seat to try and refrain herself from doing anything she would regret.
"Your language Zera." Mr. Smith scolded, "I have noticed that you seem to shut down while doing the work, I just want to help you. Truly. It's perfectly okay to accept help, perhaps if we have just one on one sessions, we can see why it is that you struggle." His entire posture relaxed, sympathy in his eyes. "I know you are looking for answers...but sometimes you cannot succeed by yourself."
A heavy silence hung between them, Zera was on edge, a feeling that she did not get often. Mr. Smith was watching her, trying to determine whether he finally broke through to the young girl before him. It lingered for quite some time before the bell rang, startling both. "I don't know what you're playing at but trust me you will regret what you find."
"I'm afraid I disagree, Zera. I've been searching for a long time, and I know that I'm able to help."
Before Zera could say another word, the students flooded the room and found their seats once again. The teacher taking his spot at the front of the class, the other students chatting eagerly as they settled down for class. Zera's interest in her teacher was now rising, curiosity was always her weakness. She huffed loudly and supposed it was inevitable that she was to meet with Mr. Smith.
After classes were over and the students all left it was just her and this teacher, she stared at him closely. His eyes turned from the hazel she was used to into jade green eyes that were slightly unnerving. "Will you listen to what I have to say?" His voice was as smooth and as soft as ever.
Zera stared in disbelief, "What are you?"
"Similar to you, just a different variety. My name isn't John Smith." He explained, then gestured to a seat, "Sit, and I swear I will answer your questions if you allow me to speak."
Zera took a moment to think, then spoke. "Why are you so sure I'll want to hear what you have to say?"
"I know you have been researching your father."
"Elijah? He isn't my father."
"No, however, he is a fraction of your father, Azazel Colt."
With that, Zera took a seat, "How do you know my father?"
"If you'll hear all I have to say, then I can answer your questions." The class room went pitch black. Then the light returned a second later and he had dark jet-black hair with a streak of white pushed back behind his ear, his olive skin tainted with a tattoo of a snake almost slithering up his neck. He had long fangs and smaller sharp teeth in his wide smile and relaxed his face.
"My real name is Seth Colt and Azazel Colt's half-brother." He began, "We have the same father and we grew up together." Seth sat on his desk, and closely watching Zera. "Your father's story is not mine to tell, but I can tell you he was not always as he is now, he was kind, thoughtful, and loyal. Not this cold and isolated beast he's turned himself into."
"Is...there just us then?" Zera interrupted.
"I'm sorry?"
"In our family...is it just the three of us?" Zera's eyes wide unlike her normal self, she was already putting herself out there. Overwhelmed by the need to know more about the family who has now found her.
"Far from...our family is large and united." Seth's smile faded and he looked to the side, "Or at least we used to be."
"What happened? Why has he said nothing of this?" Zera quickly asked, sitting at the edge of her seat.
"I truthfully don't know..." Seth answered, "That's one of the things that I had hoped to find out now that I have found you two." His gaze softened, one that hides a longing, but Zera noticed it. "You look much like your mother, child."
Zera tensed slightly, "So I keep hearing."
"If only you could have met her." Seth continued, "She really changed Azazel for the better."
"I've met her." Zera huffed slightly.
"You have?" Seth looked at her, cocking a brow, confusion written all over his face.
"Yes, Father has his ways." Zera answered, hoping he wouldn't press further, taking a moment to regain her composure. "You mentioned, that you two have the same father. Who is he? What is he like?"
Seth had a sort of childish smile on his face, "Our father, your grandfather, is Azrael Colt. He is a great man."
Zera made a mental note, nodding slightly. "If he's so great, why did Father never say anything? About him or anyone in the family? Until now, I always thought it was just us. So clearly, something went wrong."
"Our family had a falling out I suppose..." Seth's voice softened, thinking back to the past. "We did not agree all the time, and sometimes when you don't agree it can leave giant rifts in the relationships you have or make." He stared off absentmindedly, seeming as though he wanted to cry. Seth appeared to have blinked away the tears and focused on Zera once again. "I just want to bring our family back together again."
Zera nodded, watching closely for any signs of deception he may be hiding underneath his solemn demeanor. Not seeing anything, she relaxed slowly, "Which of you two are older?"
Seth chuckled, "Try to guess." A hint of a juvenile behavior, but Zera really thought about the two.
From what she saw her father was cold and calloused, calculating and jaded by the world. Seth from what she could see is mischievous, but with the disguise and his cautiousness around finding his long lost family. From what's expected of 'older' and 'younger', Seth could fill either or. Finally, Zera spoke up, "You are the younger of the two."
Seth smiled and nodded, "Very good, that is true."
"That explains why you still want to try after all this time. Answer another question for me. What happened to his mother then?"
"His mother? Nothing." Seth tilted his head, confusion clear on his face.
"Did she and grandfather separate?" Zera continued.
Seth finally understanding what she was getting at, "Oh! No, no they did not. Not exactly. He...he had an affair which resulted in me."
Zera stared at him a moment, "His dirt is so...clean."
"What do you mean?"
"Well I expected our family to have more...immoral and sinister history." Zera answered.
"I don't necessarily see why, but no. Our family history is rather 'clean' I suppose..." Seth stared at her with mild concern.
"What kind of demon are you exactly?" Zera asked curiously, she relaxed into her seat, thankful Elijah and Azazel were not present. Of all the habits she could have picked up from the humans, she had to pick up slouching. It was something that even annoyed her, but she was not one to break bad habits.
"Me? An incubus."
"That explains the smell." Zera nodded slightly.
"Smell? Excuse me??" Seth looked at her. Gravely offended.
"Well you smell like cake!" She giggled softly, "No demon has such a sweet scent, with or without perfume or cologne."
Seth rolled his eyes, "Hush child." Irritation was clear in his tone, but Seth failed to hide the hint of a smirk on his face.
As Zera giggled, there was a knock on the door, the light almost Instantly disappeared and as it returned Seth donned his disguise once more. He went and opened the door only to find Elijah standing there his normally snow-white face flushed in anger and his violet eyes locked on Seth. His lip curled up in a snarl, "Bite your tongue Seth." Zera had never really seen Elijah lose his cool, it was a jarring reality that reminded her, he truly is a demon.
"She deserves to know the truth Elijah," Seth huffed crossing his arms over his chest. "Surely you realize that."
"Azazel and I do not believe she is ready, Seth."
"Elijah, you knew and lied to me?" Zera was now standing between them, her deceptively lifeless blue eyes turned into a lively crimson as she hissed.
"Zera, we had agreed it isn't a story you are ready to hear."
"No. You and Father decided that. Is it truly me who isn't ready? Or is it him who is not ready?"
Almost immediately, in a flash stood Azazel, his lavender eyes turned ice cold blue. "Watch yourself young lady."
"Azazel, she was bound to find out, Madeline- "
"SETH!" Azazel roared and the room quaked.
Seth, startled, took a step back staring at his brother with wide eyes. Zera froze, shocked by the sudden outburst from Azazel, but quickly recovered and snarled. Zera voiced the big question, "Who is Madeline, Father?"
There was a long moment of silence before Seth so softly broke the silence and asked, "What have you done to this poor girl all this time...?"
Azazel's voice began to distort as he spoke, "I have done nothing but what I must do to protect my..." His voice seemed to have trailed off as Zera began to fume at being ignored.
Madeline, Madeline...who is Madeline? Zera thought to herself, and a throbbing headache began to form, slowly climbing down her back turning into a hot piercing pain between her shoulder blades. Azazel's voice pierced through her thoughts "...keep... safe from those...monsters." Between his distortion and the pain searing through Zera, his speech was barely audible and warped, he was mostly drowned out by the throbbing headache and sharp pain in her back.
The room began to spin around Zera, all she could hear were muffled sounds coming from Seth and Azazel. The room turned black and everything was burned.
The room was dark, Zera looked around seeing nothing, and all she could hear were soft whispers.
"Remember...remember her, find her."
"Remember who?" Zera called, putting her hands out in front of her and slowly moving forward. "Who's there? Who are you talking about?"
The whispers grew more and more frantic, becoming louder. Frantically they began to scream. "FIND HER. FIND HER" Zera tried to back away in alarm and covered her ears, stumbling backwards she fell down an empty pit. She screamed as she fell backwards down the never-ending hole. Zera fell and it went on for forever, the persistent screams never relenting, drowning out her own.
A pair of cold arms caught her midair and slowed her decent, as they continued to float downwards her savior touched ground. Zera tried to see their face, but it was shrouded in darkness. "Hello little one...you are safe now." His voice was soft and comforting. Slowly, when firmly landed on the ground, the figure gently set her down. "Child, I could hear your call."
Zera stared at the figure but couldn't make out any detail. "Who are you?"
"I am one who can hear the cries of those in need. I have many names, but you may call me Luz." The room has an overwhelming white, apart from Luz. "Do you know who you are?"
"Of course I do," She scoffed, "I am Zera." She answered but paused as something surfaced in her mind. It was Seth's words echoing in her mind, 'What have you done to this poor girl all this time?' Why did Seth say that?
"The name, Madeline means nothing to you?" Luz asked.
Zera looked at Luz, confused, the name stirred something within her, but she couldn't even comprehend what it is. One moment it was within her grasp, but like dust in the wind it was blown away. Zera closed her eyes, trying to think back where she may have heard of this Madeline, but frustratingly nothing came to mind. She then made a mental note to speak with her mother regarding this Madeline.
Luz watched her closely, she could feel eyes boring into her despite not seeing them. Zera realized the silence had been dragging on between them for a moment too long and she could feel her cheeks flush. Luz let out an amused chuckle, and Zera huffed, shaking her head. "I don't know a Madeline. Is she important?"
"Very." Luz responded, the shadows concealing his form flickered for but a moment, though revealed nothing of his appearance. "She is the key to a very bright future within the supernatural forces. Madeline has a grand destiny before her, to unite a family long since broken. However, she has been lost for some time..." Luz continued, and Zera listened intently, her interest peaked.
"You know her?" Zera asked, "She seems to be popular." There was a touch of bitterness in her voice, though Zera didn't know why.
"No, at least not personally. I've heard of her. Many have. Only a few knew her personally." Luz answered.
"Oh? Though you say she is lost?" Zera watched him, he nodded. "If she has this grand destiny, then she must be found. Yes?" He nodded again. "I understand then, you want me to find her."
"I don't necessarily care; however, if you were to find her then I'm sure there are a few who might appreciate it." Luz responded, there was something in his tone that Zera couldn't place and it bothered her. "Her family might appreciate having her back, considering her ties to the Colt Family."
At this, Zera's interest in this mysterious Madeline was pulled once again, "Her ties? Then perhaps she has answers. Answers to questions that father won't allow be answered." Zera responded nonchalantly. "If Mr. Smith...err...Seth and Elijah know of this Madeline, then they might try to hide information in regard to her last known whereabouts..." Zera looked back at Luz, "Is there something you might know? You seem to have a lot of answers. Perhaps you know of when and where she was last seen?"
"You are very straightforward child." Luz chuckled slightly, clearly amused by little Zera. "Madeline does have a connection to your family, specifically your bloodline."
"Then I'll find what ties us together." Zera looked at him, determined to find her answers, but she seemed disinterested with the task.
"I could assist you if you'd like."
"What would be in it for you?" Zera responded warily.
"Think of It as an investment, there's a horse I'm betting on and I'd like to ensure their success." Luz answered matter of fact .
Zera thought about her answer carefully, she isn't familiar with Luz, not sure who he is and not sure what his intentions may be. She was amused by her current position, more than a century from where she originally was, at the feet of a demon making a deal bargaining her soul. Standing now before some sort of darkness humorously named 'Luz' offering their hand in a deal; however, she wanted answers. No. She needed them. Azazel had hidden so much from her that only now was she beginning to get the answers she felt she deserved after all this time. "Very well."
"Do you accept my assistance then? I will be in your corner backing you, as well as provide you with whatever guidance you may need." Luz continued, there was an aura about him that Zera noticed.
A sense of intimidation, a fear that began to root itself within her, "Yes. I want your help." She answered, trying to push back the feeling of shrinking back.
The darkness surrounding Luz seemed to fade ever so slightly and through the darkness was a warm smile. Zera felt herself give in to him, her body relaxed. There was a warmth radiating from Luz, drawing her nearer. Zera took a few steps closer to him, finding herself almost face to face with his figure. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out and her heart began to race. Luz then listened her chin, and there they were. Amber eyes boring into Zera's soul, she felt her heart almost shoot out of her chest when he smiled softly and said, "Fret not child, I will be your guide from now on."
Zera nodded slightly, her cheeks feeling warm as Luz pulled her closer. Zera's breath hitched, and she tensed up at his touch. "How can I get in touch with you?" Zera asked softly, Luz's face inches from her own.
"I will always be near." Luz cooed softly as he straightened himself up, Zera watched him intently and nodded slowly. He reached a hand out and brushed her hair behind her ear, "When no one is on your side, you can always look to me to be in by your side little one." Zera felt herself smile softly.
"Thank you..." She spoke softly.
Zera's guard down, and she could faintly hear a voice she did not Immediately recognize call her. They called again, and it was Zera's mother, she blinked away from Luz and their surroundings began to fade away turning fuzzy in her view. Zera was overwhelmed with a panic and she looked back at Luz.
Luz just pulled her close and whispered something to her ear which she could not hear clearly as she watched the space around them blurred and faded away into darkness. The warmth around Luz grew colder and Zera felt her panic grow as her eyes watered, tears streamed down her cheeks.
Luz whispered more things, seemingly confused, but Zera still could not hear what he said clearly. Zera heard her mother's call yet again as the light faded to black around them, "ZERA!"
The cold darkness enveloped both Zera and Luz, engulfing the warm light entirely, she could feel herself be ripped away from her new ally. The voices of Luz and her mother then almost instantly were silenced.

To Whoever Finds This,
I urge you to approach with caution, for the subject of this tale is not a force to be trifled with. A tale that was grown beautifully, a wild rose surrounded by thorns, and the definition of deception. Despite all of the darkness surrounding us, a wondrous miracle was brought into creation, who could have even thought that a beast such as I could have aided in bringing about something so precious. As a father, I have made mistakes, more than I'd care to admit. All I have done was to protect my family. To watch it be born and grow, I was filled with pride. So would Marnie, if she were still among the living.
It's a strange thing when you can see a practical mirror image of yourself grow and thrive despite all the difficulties of life. With her alone, to see such grand change, there are no words. Now, she has given herself the power to make others quake in her presence. She can bend people to her will. It's funny really, just how much she takes after me. Marnie would think so at least.
With all things considered, perhaps it was time that I come clean. They all deserved that much, but I don't think I was ready. I didn't want to admit it, but I was terrified. I still am. I want what I have left to be secured, but I knew that things could not and would not stay the same forever. It was time to reunite a broken family, to bring everyone together. Knowing what I do now...well there's no use in dwelling what I could change when the past cannot be altered.
The story you are about to read is one of tradition coming undone. All my secrets, each one carefully crafted to perfection, unveiled for all to see. Two halves finding their way to each other despite my efforts.
Sincerely,
Azazel Colt
