I have an urge to talk about two things here:

ALL this woman wanted was a photo of her as she was right then. She moves, yes. The image is haunting, yes, but my dude behind the camera, you couldn’t have taken ONE MORE SHOT!? That woman just funded your future. You owe her a second tin type, is all I’m saying, dammit.

Also!

The detail of Eli holding his blanket around his waist always kills me. It’s subtle but still stands out to me as a bit of history that isn’t talked about much. I can’t remember if it was mentioned in the show but I don’t think it was, which makes its inclusion that much more powerful in this moment.

During this time period, if an indigenous person were to come into a settled town, they would have to cover up their clothing because the settlers considered their attire “indecent.” Eli’s wearing his army shirt and vest on top but buckskins on his legs, which, since they showed bits of leg and thigh, would have been considered inappropriate for “polite society”, or whatever, (insert the muffled screams of an infuriated zigs here) so, the blanket is covering him up for fucking colonial propriety sake. The photographer probably asked him to do it. Doesn’t that just piss you off? Now you can be angry along with me.

Still. It’s a brilliant detail alluding to one of countless injustices the indigenous people of this land had to endure. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
