Opening the anime with Natsu's motion sickness - his one weakness - is a great choice, especially considering that it'll be plot relevant later. But it also serves great to hide the fact that he's actually super powerful.

The slow introduction of more and more types of magic helps build intrigue and suspense since we're unaware of Natsu's true identity and it makes for a great reveal later on.

Lucy knowing about the illegal charms that "Salamander" uses and still falling for his tricks only shows how determined she is to get into Fairy Tail. It is her heart's greatest desire that he uses against her.

This episode goes from silly to grave and serious so fast. It sets up the tone for the entire show pretty well without making the shift feel jarring.

Natsu being plagued by his weakness leaves Lucy the opportunity to show off her magic and not be shoved into the role of a damsel in distress, even if she needed a little help. The inclusion of the boat also means that we get to see Aquarius as an introduction to Lucy's spirits.

Eventually, Natsu reveals himself as the real Salamander and Fairy Tail wizard, which clears the guild's name (since "Salamander"'s shady actions earlier reflected on it as well). We learn about him being a dragon slayer in addition to his search for Igneel.

The episode perfectly sets up Lucy, Natsu and Happy as the main characters and tells us everything we need to know about them upon introduction.

I've always seen an assumption that child souls are still in child form so I guess so. Do the other people in the afterlife keep abortions as little pets?
