Why Taakitz is a really good ship:
At first I didn’t really understand Taako and Kravitz’s relationship. I thought it was adorable, don’t get me wrong. But it didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me, at least at first.
Why would Taako, a self proclaimed self-preservationist, fall so quickly head over heals for Death himself? Sure he’s handsome, but I did’t feel like that would be enough to overlook the fact that he is DEATH. At the time it would have made more sense to me if Taako had reacted similarly to how Gandy reacted to meeting Micheal…or at least been a little more scared. Not fall in love with the guy.
But then I thought about it.
I think their relationship can be taken both literally and figuratively. I think Taako was afraid, or at least very intimidated by Kravitz when they first met. But then as he spent a little more time with him he found he wasn’t so bad after all. Death wasn’t so scary after all. And realizing that, Taako took a big chance, was uncharacteristically brave, and decided to try and both literally and figuratively flirt with Death in order to persuade him to let him and his friends keep their lives. And THAT, at least I think, is when their relationship really began. Not when Taako tried to tentacle him (for the record he didn’t even know that was Kravitz yet). But when Taako realizes that he can successfully flirt with death, and Kravitz is attracted to this.
Why is this important though?
Well think about it! (Sorry for spoilers but) The very last bit of dialogue we get between Kravitz and Taako is this:
Kravitz: I’ll make sure not to take you anywhere too scary.
Taako: It’s ok. I’m a big boy. I can handle it.
Kravitz: *smiles* I know you are.
LIKE…the last thing they say to each other in the whole story is Kravitz commenting on how he’s seen Taako grow and change and become a braver person, not only in terms of fighting off bad guys, but in opening himself up to love and be loved again. This is what Kravitz teaches him! This is what their whole relationship is about (at least on Taako’s end): Kravitz teaching Taako how to be braver by confronting something he is afraid of and learning to love in spite of it. By teaching Taako to flirt with death Kravitz helps him to grow.
Basically, to summarize this whole thing. I think that Taako and Kravitz are together for a reason much larger that “It was funny. It was cute. etc.” which once again just goes to show how much thought and care was put into this podcast.
