As it turns out, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a large quantity of fertilized Lady Amherst eggs, and hope for females, than to purchase and ship the bird post partum. Granted there are a different set of risks (possible non-survival, all male chicks, etc.) but worst case scenario, we end up with a few pretty birds to sell and turn a profit on. Best case, we end up with ladies to breed with Lorde, who btw has acclimated quite nicely to his new home out in the aviary with the Von der Deckens. :)

Being a single parent is hard...

...even for a day.

Kiley is out of town with his family to celebrate his dad receiving some sort of Hall of Fame induction for being a genius basketball coach, or something...and so I've been entrusted to keep the animals while he's away.

Of course, yesterday was crazy on it's own (which I should really tell that story, as well), today had it's own set of challenges.

It began with my awakening at the sound of the bedroom door bursting open and hearing, "OH MY GOD! IT'S 7:54!" Considering I am usually AT work by 7:15am, this was a cause for alarm. As it turns out, it seems that somehow, neither of our phones managed to receive a charge overnight--even though they were both plugged into their respective power cables--and had died at some point throughout the early morning hours. Since we both rely on our phones as our alarm clocks in the morning, this allowed us the unfortunate luxury of sleeping in.

Luckily for me, my office had planned a "pajama day" as our quarter one potluck theme, so getting dressed didn't take much thought. ;) Unfortunately, however, I also didn't have time to shower...this led to some pretty crazy rat-nest hair. To top it off, I had to go straight from the office to the restaurant, where I put in another five hours waiting tables.

I arrived home about 10pm, took the dogs out to potty, fed them, gave the sphynxes their food, cleaned their litterboxes, bottle fed the cavy, gave him solid food, fed the skinny pigs, prepared and fed (which I claimed I'd never do) the Von der Deckens, and the Lady Amherst Phesant...all before being able to shower.

Whew!

That leads us to this moment, where I find myself in bed, typing this post--yawning--and jamming out to some Adele, courtesy of Pandora.com.

Tomorrow has more animal husbandry, along with some household chores I have been trying to get to for weeks. I really hope to be able to make an impact around here this weekend. With the place to myself, this should be the great opportunity I've needed. Unfortunately, I have a really good track record of marathoning the crap out of some Netflix when I've been in this situation in the past.
