Usopp and Sanji - intimacy

“Do you ever think that, maybe, you need a hug?” 

“Huh?” Sanji looked up from the oven before looking back down to concentrate on the tray of cookies. “Are you okay?” 

“Not the general ‘you,’ I mean you specifically.” 

“Do I need a hug?” Sanji scowled and set the tray on the stove, pulling off his mitts. “No. Dare I ask why?” 

Usopp swirled his glass of water like he was re-mixing a drink at a bar. “You hardly let anyone touch you. When we first started sailing, you were a little more . . . what’s the word, not touchy-feely, but . . . huggy?” 

Sanji folded his arms, not prompting Usopp, but not stopping him, either. 

“But you’ve been more standoffish since then. Especially after Sabaody---after we got back together, I should say.” 

“Your point?” 

“Are you . . . scared of intimacy?” 

Sanji raised an eyebrow. “You looking to get kicked? I’ll only accept hugs from women, thank you very much.” 

“But that’s not true either, is it?” 

“I didn’t let you in here to psychoanalyze me---” 

“When you talk to Nami and Robin, you always keep your distance. You don’t try to touch them, and even if you ask them for a kiss or a hug, it feels like you don’t mean it. I’d say you’re being respectful, but also, I know you.” 

Sanji bit down, absentmindedly chewing the strand of hair that had crept its way into his mouth. “You’ve got five seconds to convince me to not walk away right now.” 

Usopp took in a deep, but quick, breath. “I-don’t-know-why-you’re-scared-to-let-people-touch-you-but-if-you’re-willing-I’d-like-to-give-you-a-hug-and-if-not-me-I’ll-go-get-Chopper---” 

“Time’s up.” 

Usopp closed his mouth, inhaling again. Sanji turned away, reaching for the cigarette that wasn’t there and instead brushing away the hair from his mouth. 

“Okay,” he said. 

“Okay?” 

“Okay. One hug. From you. Ten seconds.” 

Usopp jumped to his feet and went to Sanji, holding out his arms. Sanji stared at him and took a step back as if on instinct. Usopp wiggled his fingers, giving Sanji a look. Sanji stepped forward this time, his hands in his pockets, his feet moving like lead. As soon as he was in range, Usopp closed the gap, wrapping his arms around Sanji in a tight but gentle embrace. Sanji tensed under his grip before relaxing all too suddenly, making Usopp think he might fall to the floor until he wrapped his arms around Usopp in turn, holding his hands awkwardly as if he didn’t know where to put them. 

“Um,” Usopp said. “That’s ten seconds.” 

“‘S fine.” 

“Huh?” 

“Just . . . just a little longer.” Sanji let his head fall onto Usopp’s shoulder as he closed his eyes, shaking as if he’d just run a marathon. “Please.” 

Usopp kept his hands still, fearing a rub or a pat might scare Sanji away, so he squeezed instead, feeling every tremble beneath his fingers as if it was his own heartbeat.
