Tell me about a genuinely happy moment in your life

Roark sits there for a moment, seemingly in deep thought. As much of a pessimist he tends to be, he can't deny that there's been plenty of happiness in his life, especially in more recent times. There's been the days he's woke up early and had breakfast with his mother, catching up on lost time. There's been the moments where he and his brother have wrestled like dumb idiots over the stupidest shit, and though he acted annoyed he was annoyed, he loved the fact that he and his brother were back to being best friends again. There's even the times where he's sat up late in the living room, talking to Steven about their shared passion of all things geology.

But if he had to pick a moment to talk about, the moment where he felt genuinely happiest... there was really only one that rushed right to the forefront of his mind.

"I'm sure you've heard of my good friend Mothy, right? Finnley Jones, Sinnoh Champ - 'm sure you have. He's one of my closest friends - me n' him go way, way back. But see, the thing is... he was actually the first friend I ever had. The only one for a long, long time. I was this scruffy, feral lookin' kid - y'know, the kinda child you think would bite you without hesitation? And I would've, too! Though people... didn't exactly like that too much. Not too great for makin' friends, beatin' the shit outta people. But... then there was him. Beat up lookin' kid wearing old, outdated clothes. Didn't even look like he was from this time, nevermind this world. Fell outta the sky and didn't remember anything, not even his own name."

Might never have been able to reconnect with my family, might have never gotten out of that hellhole - my life's gotten so much better since he became a part of it. No matter where he came from, when he came from - I'm really glad he's here."

It’s not uncommon for Roark to go into the mines for unreasonable amounts of time - speaking truthfully, he spends more time underground than he does up above. It isn’t always intentional, of course. Sometimes he just loses track of time and before he knows it it’s been three days and his mother, concerned for his well being, had sent Rory to drag him back up to the surface. Though sometimes he just wants to be alone, left with nothing but his thoughts - and his rocks, of course. 

Though of course, there’s always other people in the underground he runs into. It’s not quite as busy there as it used to be - usually he ends up running into the same people if he sees anyone at all. There’s the hikers trading spheres for helpful items, along with some trainers that had also found enjoyment in digging about and finding the various treasures buried in the underground’s walls. It wasn’t often he saw new people walking about the tunnels - in fact, it rarely ever happened anymore.

That’s why it piqued his interest when he noticed someone he’d never seen before.

He couldn’t say he recognized her face - hell, she didn’t even look like she was from Sinnoh. He wasn’t the type to approach people most times - he wasn’t exactly the most social or friendly person in the world - but this time, on a whim, he decided he’d say something. After all, it was quite the rare sight - and he’d found himself intrigued. 

“Hey there. Don’t think I’ve seen you around here before.” He gave her a slight, if not mildly awkward smile. “Not often I see a new face around here. Didja come lookin’ for somethin’ in particular?”

Their footsteps echo as they walk through the Sinnoh Underground, the sound bouncing off the stone walls with the distant sounds of wild Pokemon and the ever constant rhythm of dripping water. They’re sounds Roark has come to love, come to associate with comfort and safety. Sure, mining can be an incredibly dangerous job, one most people wouldn’t even think of pursuing - but he’s never felt more at home than he has here. 

He knows his companion understands that sentiment well - after all, from what he’s been told he quite literally met Mothy inside a cave. It had been incredibly nice to have someone to talk to about his lifelong interest - someone who actually shared it as well. Perhaps he and Steven had gotten off on the wrong foot at first - but he now considers the man to be one of his closest friends. 

...Maybe a bit more than that, but you’d never catch him admitting it.

“I will say, I don’t often have company down here. It’s a nice change.” His eyes scan the rocky walls of the mines, looking to see if he can spot something gleaming within the stone. “Though I’m sure you’ve come here yourself by now, knowing you. I won’t bore you with a tour or anything - it’s more fun to discover stuff yourself, after all.”

⚠ - Honestly? He tends to run headfirst into danger without much of a second thought - and that’s something that gets him into loads of trouble more often than not. He's very much an act first, think later type of person - which is why his brother kind of has to grab him by the back of his shirt and prevent him from doing dumb shit more than you'd really expect. He tends to think with his emotions and not with his common sense, so if he's in a very angry or upset state he might end up doing things he regrets a whole lot later.

☃ - Roark is an autumn person! Not only does he love the cool, breezy weather and the sights of the trees changing color, but he can and will take a trip to Eterna City just to walk around on the dry leaves. He says it's just because he wants to challenge Gardenia to a battle or something along those lines - but most people close to him know why he's actually there. It's fine to them, though - after all, the guy needs breaks more often than he thinks. It's nice to see him enjoying himself. As for his least favorite season? It’s summer, by a longshot. He’s already warm blooded enough to wear shirts with no sleeves in the winter - the summer heat absolutely kills this man. And that’s in Sinnoh - if he ever went to Alola he’d fry like an egg.

The New Sinnoh League!

A crash course, this excludes the process to becoming a gym leader or elite.

It's not easy, but it's fair! Part one of my lore building posts for my main verse.

Once Mothy gains the champion title, he restructures the league from its previous state to a completely new way of things. He puts the League on a 2 year pause to instate these changes. Sinnoh now carries both a Major and a Minor league, 9 gym locations and 18 badges. One badge per type. Each minor league leader is a trainee under their major league companion aiming to become the next major league gym leader for their respective city. You must be at least 18 years old to challenge the League. The league maintains a code of conduct that all challengers must adhere to: -Do not willingly bring harm to your pokemon -Do not willingly bring harm to your fellow challengers -Do not cheat or use tactics that could permanently harm any opponent or ally -Respect the Sentience of pokemon, and their choices. -Do not force a pokemon to be captured against their will -Do not break the law without good cause. Be prepared to make your case. Challengers are allowed a certain amount of pokemon limited by their maximum lifetime badge count, if a badge is earned towards this it does NOT expire. The maximum for teams is 6, the maximum total registered battle pokemon is 13. Two full teams and one floating member. If you gain all badges and they expire you are still allowed the maximum that that granted you. This count starts at 2 with 0 badges, and increases by 1 for every 2 badges after that. A gym leader will use the same amount of pokemon as you up to the team maximum of 6. by the time you leave the minor league you will be having full team matches with each leader. 0 badges - 2 pokemon 2 badges - 3 pokemon 4 badges - 4 pokemon 6 badges - 5 pokemon 8 badges - 6 pokemon 10 badges - 7 pokemon 12 badges - 8 pokemon 14 badges - 10 pokemon 15 badges - 11 pokemon 16 badges - 12 pokemon 18 badges - 13 pokemon A minor league gym leader is an experienced trainer along the lines of an ace trainer or ex champion that needs to learn how to be an effective gym leader. Things such as; maintaining a 50/50 win rate, how to change your tactics to match the skill level of your opponent, maintaining multiple teams for these different levels of skill. A minor league leader does not have final say on giving out their badge, needing the observation and clearance from their mentor to hand them out. You can lose to a minor league leader and still get their badge if the mentor decides such. A major league gym leader is experienced in being a trainer as well as a gym leader, able to maintain at least a 30-40% loss rate and able to train a minor league leader. They can revoke their own badge and the minor league badge below them at will, though they must give reason. This can range from misconduct to judgement calls, and all revocations are to be approved by the reigning champion. Major league leaders Major and Minor league leaders are allowed to use whatever legal battle tactics that they wish to. Examples; Double, triple and rotation battles, contest rules or additions, terrain or status effects, stat changes, mega evolution, z moves and so on. If you lose to a gym leader, you must wait at least a week before challenging again. The Sinnoh League rotates between the major and minor league every 6 months to give the leaders time to rest and to train their pokemon. The first 6 months of the year are for the minor league, then the last 6 the major. Each new years there is a battle tourney held at the league stadium, the winner of which is allowed to formally challenge the elite four and champion. If you manage to beat the champion you enter a 2 year training program to prepare you for the position before taking it.

HEADCANON 001.

Roark, though he likes to claim nothing phases him, has a lot of things that can badly trigger him. Of course, with the amount of trauma the man has, this makes complete sense. There’s the more obvious things, such as people touching or grabbing him when he’s not expecting it - he has accidentally decked his brother for grabbing his shoulder from behind before - but there are some smaller, more obscure ones. The most notable and intense of these being metal clanging sounds. 

When he hears a metallic sound, and he isn’t expecting it, it will immediately send him into an intense panic attack without fail. Unfortunately, he discovered this trigger when watching a friendly battle between Mothy and Steven - let’s just say the sounds of a Mega Aggron and Mega Metagross fighting was much more than enough to send him into an incredibly intense panic. One moment he was fine, the next he couldn’t breathe, and before he even knew what was happening he was on his knees and his friends were rushing over. They felt absolutely horrible, but of course they couldn’t have known - Roark wasn’t even aware he had the trigger himself. After they helped bring him down from the attack, he was alright - and of course, they made sure not to have Duchess and Platinum battling against each other when he was there. 

As for what traumatic event caused this trigger to form in the first place... he honestly isn’t even sure. He doesn’t remember. The fact that he isn’t even sure why the sound triggers him in the first place really only makes it worse for him; sure, he’s glad he’s repressed at least some of his trauma, but not knowing why he’s triggered so severely by such an obscure thing is incredibly distressing to him. Though, to tell the truth, he’d likely never admit that.
