Last time i was on Tumblr, I was trolling a group of Mahwah residents who wanted to keep an eruv out of their community, lest they turn into Lakewood. And while I kind of sympathize, they were pretty antisemitic. Anyhow that's done (or I don't care) so now I'm going to use this blog to read books. And talk about them. patreon.com/timlieder if you'd like to support me.

Nika Shakarami's blood called out and Allah finally answered
Say her name. This is 16 year-old Nika Shakarami, who was murdered by the Butcher of Tehran, Ebrahim Raisi in 2022.

Raisi met the mountain yesterday, and lost. Iranians all over the world are justifiably celebrating this event, including fireworks displays.

There are 72 more - very unhappy virgins.

Raisi is dead. May his friends join him.
i think the world doesn’t know what it really means to live in a theocratic dictatorship. Let me tell you about our experiences living in the islamic regime of iran.
1. Your parents were born to muslim parents so they’re automatically muslim. You’re automatically a muslim too. You didn’t choose your religion and you can’t opt out of it or you will be executed.
2. The compulsory hijab law makes you a criminal if you choose not to wear hijab even tho you didn’t choose to be a muslim and you don’t consider yourself a muslim but the regime has forced you into that role whether you like it or not. And when you ‘break that law’, they can do with you as they please.
3. little girls as young as 7 yrs old are forced to wear hijab at school even tho the islam itself says the age is 9. and all the schools are gender segregated so imagine how they force you to get used to hijab even when you’re just surrounded by other girls. And all day long at school they tell you horrible stories about what will happen to you in hell if someone sees even a strand of your hair.
4. the regime modifies all the textbooks, story books, cartoons and movies to represent the ideal woman with full on hijab. The iranian media is ordered to photoshop every photo of a woman that may be showing a little skin. And if they’re iranian, no hair is supposed to be seen or that will be photoshopped away. Women are mostly excluded from billboards and tv commercials.
5. imagine going to work or meeting up with a friend when suddenly the morality police kidnap you in broad daylight and force you into a van to take you to a station where they will treat you like a criminal and if you don’t agree to get humiliated and do as they say, they will put you in prison. And in case of Mahsa Amini and so many more before her, they will beat you to death. My sister was barely 18 when she got kidnapped and they didn’t let her call home and she’d been so fucking scared and we had no idea where she was. Imagine all the psychological trauma.
6. If you’re in a car and not wearing hijab they will fine you and seize your car. So when u get into a taxi the driver will ask you to keep your hijab on otherwise they’ll get fined. And if you refuse they’ll ask you to get off the car.
7. And its not just about hijab. In Ramadan, they get even more vicious. If they catch you eating or even drinking water on the street they will give you lashes as punishment and even imprison you for breaking the law. If you work in a state-owned company it’s even worse. They will close the cafeteria and take away the water dispensers. All restaurants are banned from delivering food before iftar. It’s a fucking mess. Everyone has to pretend they’re fasting or they’ll be severely punished.
8. And how could I forget about this! iranian women are banned from singing! the islamic regime prohibits women’s singing voices to be heard by men so imagine the horror of having 50% of the population banned from ever becoming a singer. If they identify a female singer in iran, they will take her to jail and force her to repent her sins in the most humiliating way so that she will never dare sing again.
9. And every time the regime gets wind of a private gathering of men and women trying to have fun and live their fucking private lives, the police crash the party and take everyone to jail bc the Islamic regime bans iranian men and women from having fun.
10. Did you know that the islamic regime doesn’t allow women’s faces to be printed on their obituaries or headstones? They put a flower for our faces instead and if they see a headstone with a woman’s face printed on it they’ll smash it to pieces. That’s how religious dictatorship continues to oppress and erase women even after their deaths.
11. For some reason, women aren’t allowed to ride motorcycles and the government won’t issue any license for them. In some cities, women are barred from riding a bicycle.
So if you see Islam has become for many iranians a symbol of oppression and torture and discrimination, that’s why. The regime uses islam as a weapon to silence and punish anyone who opposes them. You can love islam all you want from the safety of your home in a free country and talk about how kind and benevolent the religion is, but in iran, it’s a whole different story.
Our economy is fucked. All govt officials are corrupt as fuck. Most websites are banned in iran. Even tumblr is banned. The world has cut the iranian ppl from many services. We don’t have intl credit cards like visa card. Amazon doesn’t do delivery to iran. We cant get netflix, spotify or even a gamepass subscription. we don’t get any Apple services here. iran isn’t listed as a country you could choose when signing up for a lot of services. and when we decide to leave iran and escape this hellhole, every country out there will make it sooo much harder for us to get a visa just bc we had the misfortune to be born in iran at the wrong time.
This is the story of iran for the past 44 years. Held hostage by a corrupt regime that uses religion to suppress and torture the people and being abandoned by the rest of the world bc our lives don’t matter.
Please be our voice. Once they shut down the internet completely and silence our voice, they will start slaughtering us to stifle the protests just like they did in 2019. Please help us. We want this fucking regime gone.

Shortly after October 7, Susan Sarandon gave a speech saying that she wanted Jews to be afraid again. She's currently supporting the Columbia University Nazis. Roger Waters denied that October 7 happened and railed against Bono for observing a moment of silence for Hamas' victims. Eric Clapton, racist shitbird, is receiving praise from the leftists who are cool with his racism and conspiracy babbling as long as he talks shit about Israel.

Seriously fuck.those Columbia University nazis
My mother graduated and then taught at Barnard for over 20 years. We have been donating to the Columbia institution for almost 30 years. And today my mother called and requested an appointment with the President so she could tell her, to her face, what an absolute farce the institution has become and that we’re pulling all of our funding.
The Jews are in our ✨FAFO era✨ and I couldn’t be prouder.
(If you’re not watching what’s going on at American universities, and specifically at ivy leagues, wake tf up.)

URGENT: Yesterday Iranian volleyball player Mobina Rostami, bravely spoke out against the regime's attack on Israel.
"As an Iranian, I am truly ashamed of the regime's attack on Israel, but you need to know that the people in Iran love Israel and hate the Islamic Republic."
Not long after her home was raided, she was arrested and taken away to an undisclosed location, her social media accounts were shut down, and she has not been heard from since.
The silence surrounding her whereabouts is concerning, and we can only imagine the horrors she may be enduring for standing up against a brutal regime.
It's crucial to SHARE Mobina's story and refuse to let Iran silence voices advocating for tolerance and peace.

"Private Rituals" by Dorothy Allison (High Risk)
Yeesh
There are two facts of sexuality
People get sexual feelings much earlier than anyone would like to admit. Forget about puberty, there's definitely a great deal of obsession and curiosity during childhood.
We need to protect children and teenagers from predators who can groom and molest them.
The second one is pretty easy to accept. At least in our society. In other cultures, there was a lot of pederasty and open lusting after children. Or at very least teenagers. I know that when I was 11, I was very horny for my neighbor that I babysat for. Had she decided to be creepy and fucked me, I would not have had a problem with that. In fact I even wrote "I want to fuck Patty" on a slip of paper. Sadly my mom found it and wouldn't let me forget it (seriously, that woman had NO respect for boundaries. Minor miracle she didn't call out what I was doing when I locked the bathroom).
Either way, it's a good thing that Patty never fucked me. That would have been a power imbalance that I don't think I could have recovered from.
But there's a serious undercurrent running through our society. One that we clamp down. One that we don't like to talk about. Predators and molesters know it and they exploit it. They even use our disgust with it as a cover. Oh sure, we might all agree that it's horrible and even talk about wanting to castrate pedophiles. And that makes it even harder to spot them.
Oh no, obviously those pedophiles are out in the world creeping on children, but not Jimmy. Jimmy would NEVER do that. Jimmy loves kids. Oh sure, Jimmy keeps making all these jokes about it, but that's just Jimmy having fun.
Years pass and suddenly we find out that Jimmy has been raping kids for decades and he died peacefully in his sleep. And no one cares.
Then there's where we go to the opposite extreme. I'm not terribly excited with the ways that we made Anne Frank into a secular saint, the cute little Jewish teenager who said that everyone was good at heart and tacitly forgave everyone who murdered her. That's definitely not her diary. She hated Germans. She hated living in that fucking attic and she only wanted to believe people were good at heart because the alternative was to fucking hate the entire world. She even says that.
She also says that she gets excited looking at naked women. So yes, Anne Frank was bisexual. She was 15 when she died and in her early teen years when she wrote about being horny for women, but she could make up her own fucking mind about it. Screaming "DON'T SEXUALIZE CHILDREN" at LGBT people who can relate to Anne in her teen years might make you feel good. Might even make the whole "Anne Frank was bisexual" conversation avoid you for a time.
But it's fucking dishonest. Granted, some of those people screaming that are Ace and have no experience feeling horny for anyone in their teen years, but those of us who also got horny for naked women in our teen years find it a little weird that there's a contingent of people who want to pretend that sexuality begins at age 18 (maybe 16) and before then it's nothing and suggesting anything else is child molestation.
There's a major spectrum between Piers Anthony/Countdown to 18 creeps and policing anyone for admitting to sexual thoughts before their 16th birthday.
So that's a really long introduction for a creepy ass story that Dorothy Allison begins by talking about how her sister and her were both masturbating when they were 8. Like she figured out that her sister was masturbating (and wearing their mother's underwear like a hat when she did it) and then wondered if her sister openly did it when alone.
Then there's her stepfather who keeps spanking her, because he gets off on it. She knows that he gets off on it. Eventually he starts fucking her. She reports this without tears, just like it's one of the fucked up sexual things that happened to her. She depicts her childhood as a series of orgasms and creepy dudes who want to have orgasms on her.
Her uncle also dry humps her. Also she finally tells someone about her stepfather and her uncles beat him up. Only that doesn't really help. Her mother just goes back to him and that's that.
This is a brilliantly written piece that squicked me out. When I was a child, I read Piers Anthony and didn't see much of a problem with his pedophile writings because I was young myself. Lusting after a 14 year old girl doesn't seem wrong when you are a 13 year old boy. When you're an adult man, it feels very creepy.
I might read Dorothy Allison's book. I hear it's good but also I hope it doesn't have horny 8 year old girls in it. I really don't want to read about horny 8 year old girls.

Job Chapter 28
Wisdom
I feel like Job is going to contradict this statement
And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”
The rest of this chapter is rather beautiful. Where does wisdom come from. Iyov really goes into a major discourse on how humanity digs into the earth for all the metals, all the diamonds. Food comes from the ground.
It sounds like a very humanist chapter. Like Job is praising humanity for being able to find sapphires, grow food and dig into the earth.
But wisdom? How the fuck do you find that? It's not like you can just go exploring. It's not in the ocean. It's not in the sea. You can't buy it. "A pouch of wisdom is better than rubies."
It's an interesting question since there's an entire book of the Bible dedicated to the aphorisms of the society (Proverbs) and then a book of wisdom when you understand that life isn't about all the nice sayings (Qoheleth). And of course, the section of the Bible (Tanakh) is calls Kethuvim so all of it is considered Wisdom (basically Wisdom is everything that isn't Torah or Prophets. Prophets is history plus the Prophetic works - major and minor).
And unlike in Dungeons & Dragons, intelligence and wisdom tend to be inversely proportional. Grow up gifted and you think you know everything. That is the opposite of wisdom.
But yeah, G-d makes rain and wisdom. G-d knows everything, so fear G-d. What does that mean on a symbolic level? Fear everything or fear whatever makes the rain and the waters.
Fear G-d. Because G-d is beyond the rest. If you fear G-d, you don't have to fear anything else - not fire, murder or zombies. G-d is running things.
Also, it's ironic in the context of this book since G-d can always fuck with you, so you better fear g-d.

Job Chapter 27
Job starts talking about the fate of the wicked and I'm confused
Did Job and his friends switch positions? Or is he coming around to agree with them. First off, he still says that he's innocent. He isn't speaking blasphemy. He's not saying anything that is out of bounds. He's truly in pain. He's truly speaking on behalf of humanity against his friends who seem to be too immersed in the G-d justice mindset to have any empathy.
But then it sounds as if he is agreeing with them. He's saying everything that they said back to them. When he says "let my enemy be like the wicked?" whom is he referring to? His friends that came to fight with him? Satan?
Then he goes on about the fate of the wicked and he sounds like his friends from discourse two who wouldn't stop saying that the wicked eventually fail and lose everything.
Is he mocking them? Agreeing with them? Is he being sarcastic or has he come around to their way of thinking?
Um...seriously what fucking book are you reading?
The part in the middle where he askes "will they call upon G0d at all times?" might mean that his friends are going to face the same trials. Only that seems to be what they are saying too
But then Job says that God punishes the wicked. There's a long discourse on how Job punishes the wicked. It makes no fucking sense in context unless Job is saying that the wicked are his friends. Or is he going "Yes, the wicked are going to lose everything, but I'm not wicked and your implication that I am wicked is nasty."
Fucking hell, that completely contradicts everything that Job said to his friends in previous chapters.
I'm still holding out hope that he's being sarcastic and repeating what his friends said in order to tell them that they are fucking idiots.

Yeah. Criticize Israel fine.
Accuse Israel of genocide because it's popular even though you've been cool with genocide for decades (kurds, uyghurs, Sudanese, Syrians, Iranian women, etc, etc) and you dig blood libel, no thank you.
Also one dumbfuck burning himself up dies not make your genocide accusations any more believable or any less blood libel.
Hey sorry for unfollowing you, I really didn't want to and I still love your blog however you want me and my people dead simply for existing and I still tried to tolerate it for a while for some reason, but I guess I'm just tired of you wanting me gone. Darn.

Atrocity Alert No. 365: Syria, Nicaragua and Cluster Munitions
20 September 2023
ATROCITY ALERT
Atrocity Alert is a weekly publication by the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect highlighting situations where populations are at risk of, or are enduring, mass atrocity crimes.
SYRIAN CIVILIAN SUFFERING WORSENS AS HOSTILITIES AND ATROCITIES ESCALATE
Since 1 September there has been an increase in hostilities across northwest Syria, with shelling and clashes reported across Idlib and northern Aleppo governorates. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), at least 27 civilians, including 11 children, have been killed or injured. OCHA also reported that over 26,500 people have been newly displaced due to the rise in hostilities, causing overcrowding in displacement camps with high needs for emergency shelter, food and water.
The clashes mark a significant escalation in violence that has been ongoing in northwest Syria in recent months, particularly in Idlib governorate. Ground fighting, shelling and airstrikes perpetrated by forces loyal to the Syrian government have damaged medical facilities, markets, schools and displacement camps, greatly reducing access to food, water, medical care and adequate housing. According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, between January and August, at least 49 civilians were killed, including 16 children, and 112 injured in northwest Syria before the increase in hostilities. The armed extremist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham also continues to perpetrate abuses, including arbitrarily detaining activists and journalists.
Over 12 years into the conflict, civilians in Syria continue to suffer extensively from atrocity crimes. The latest report of the UN Human Rights Council-mandated Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on Syria found that grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law continue across the country in areas controlled by both the Syrian government and non-state actors. All parties to the conflict continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity through arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings in areas under their control.

"Heavy Breathing" by Essex Hemphill (High Risk)
Oh damn, this is a rough one.
I was going to go on about intersectionality and how it's tough enough to be in two separate communities without them both being imposed from you from without. Essex Hemphill was a gay black man who died of AIDS in the 1990s and most of this poem has a problem with the black community.
Also it's the part of his identity that he's most committed to. Like he would like to just be gay and have lots of sex but he's black and he's got the mixture of anger and shame that you get from being a minority that's constantly under the microscope.
Personal bit - I will throw down with anyone who accuses Israel of "genocide" from many angles including the fact that they are ignoring actual genocide in Sudan and Syria and Kurdistan, but also from the fact that there's nothing the anti-Zionists love more than to use hyperbole. Why bother talking about mass incarceration when you can call it "concentration camps" or why talk about 1948 as a war when you can call it "ethnic cleansing" (even though 1/6 of Israel's population is Arab, non-Jewish Arab if you want to call the Mizrachi Jews Arabs - and given their history of being exiled from Arab lands I wouldn't recommend it) or why bother with the absurd position of the occupied territories, similar to Puerto Rico with that weird place between sovereignty and full voting rights, when you can scream "Apartheid" over and over again.
But I'm also fucking embarrassed by Jews like Steven Miller and Ben Shapiro. And makes it worse with Shapiro since I'm also Orthodox and kind of took that purity culture bullshit seriously for a few months in my 20s.
Only we also have to talk about the exaggerations in the poem. Like Hemphill isn't just talking about racism and homophobia, he's internalized some of that racism. And some of the homophobia and he's not going to push it away like it's nothing. (When I was just yt and Lutheran, I didn't get it. Because who gives a fuck if white people are ashamed of whiteness. Considering how many corpses went into their lifestyle, they should be ashamed.)
So we get the case of Catherine Fuller - https://www.npr.org/2011/07/05/137505451/a-murder-7-convictions-and-many-question-marks - where he bought into the media story that 8 young men assaulted and raped her with a pipe in full view of everyone else in the neighborhood. Another Kitty Genovese case.
And also just as fake. The case isn't as notorious as the Central Park Five. It didn't take place in New York, after all. But it was notorious enough to stoke the racism. And of course, there's an individual who very well could have done it alone - and it'd be more realistic than a gang rape in the middle of the day with vendors all around it who could see it.
But Essex Hemphill didn't ask about it. He just heard about it and felt shame. The same way I hear about the IDF possibly shooting Palestinians going for food and feel shame (and hope that it isn't true. It does seem like something Hamas would do and blame the IDF for. But I can't exactly pretend that this is the most likely case).
So this poem is about fucking and the 80s racism that pretended that black people won all their civil rights battles, while white supremacy was working overtime to fuck them over without Jim Crow.
It's nasty and grim. I probably should read more by him.
