when you feel anxious entering a new lecture hall or classroom (when it feels like you’re off to physically battle your academia enemies!), find a quiet corner right before class time— maybe an empty hall or bathroom and take a few deep breaths.

then pull out your phone and record yourself saying:

“hey babe, you're going to be okay. I'm in your corner, so you'll be just fine. lets do something fun afterwards!”

Now, listen to it back: listen to it again even on your way to class, with your earphones in.

now enter class, another deep breath. take your seat.

taxi, please!

I was sitting in the back of a taxi, worrying and fretting about life. Before me the roads of the city were noisy and clamored with nighttime cars and buses and those giant trailers that wont stop honking.

I was sad and anxious about things I couldn't control. things that had already happened. things yet to come.

the taxi driver saw this.

because even through my chatty and bubbly conversation it was clear that I had so much on my mind.

he had kind words for me, friendly and funny tales that made me laugh out loud. some even made me somber and reflective.

he reminded me that I needed to let myself feel more free, to let go of all those things that were weighing me down. to have faith.

but he knew too that it was easier said than done.

I want to wield faith like a warrior wields a sword. but instead I wave it around like a broken pencil.

I'm glad the taxi diver was not only kind but understanding.

I wish more people in the world were kind and understanding. that my pain wasn't something to be dismissed or made fun of.

because just like everyone else, this fairy is tired and deserves a place to rest her head.

for the teddy bear girls

we're cuddly. made of pink fluff and nonsense. and giggles! sometimes we like sweet things or sour things but mostly we like things that make us feel safe and warm and cozy.

we want hugs and love and little notes of encouragement like: you can do this! or you're so pretty or our favorite "wow, she's a princess!"

I think about it a lot, being so squishy with cute button eyes and a love of napping. I think about how I want to protect all that cotton and fabric and thread that makes me, me.

do you think about it too?

a little sparkly, a little shimmery, we're kind of magical, yeah? a little out of this world yet totally in earth's orbit.

hmmm, I like the sound of that.

feeling strong and being strong can be two different things, I'm learning...

Just because I don't feel like I have what it takes, doesn't mean I don't have what it takes.

the more steps I take forward into the unkown, building my little life and listening to my heart and having courage.. I think, well I hope, that I'll feel stronger in time. but for now, I'll just have to remember:

I am capable. I am strong, my cute little soft teary-eyed pink-loving self is strong.

ps: please don't run from your feelings (I've tried, it hurts)! process them, love up on them, sit with them when you need to. let them help you understand yourself. know that they can (and will) grow and morph into lovely pieces of wisdom for your being. who knows, you may just find out that these all encompassing feelings are proof of the strength of your being <3

When Your Archenemy Comes To Visit

Brianna spun around to the back of the counter to check out her hair in the mirror...

Big and honey-blonde perfect. As usual.

Although, should she have worn the butterfly clips, instead of the multi-colored dragon flies, in her hair?

Wait.

What?

The heck!

Why was she thinking about this now? Who cared. Was she out of her mind?? Questioning her fashion choices was like committing bank fraud or stealing birthday cards at the shopping mall—ridiculous. 

“You better act like the fashion princess you are or I will come through that mirror and pinch you silly,” She snapped at her reflection, pressing her index finger to the glass (pink and yellow striped press-on nails click-clacking, shiny and sharp to the max) to show that she meant business. 

Ring, Ring!

The tell-tale sound of the front door bell floated in the air. And then:

“Woah. This place is cool. How does this look so real? You’ve been holding out on me, babe.”

Surreal was what this was.

Watching him, the him, rotate on the spot in glossy black sneakers. His strange eyes glancing about, taking in the bright colors of Brianna's whimsy world for the very first time.

✨Your Best is Magical✨

The sun is leaving the sky, the moon is shifting through the clouds: it's late and you're still wide awake in bed. Tossing and turning and tossing some more, stressing and fretting about what has come and gone. Did you do enough? What if it could have been better? Ahhhhh!

Babe, breathe, you did your best. Here are a few ways to remind yourself that your best is magical, no matter what happens next:

☀️ Schedule a day in your phone calendar (alarms and everything!) to celebrate any good thing that happened due to your effort this week. Go and get your favorite ice pop at the corner shop down the street (hellooo it's summerrr. I got peach and raspberry last time, interesting flavor combo but it was good) or allow yourself a cute little nail salon day. You deserve it.

🌷 Rewrite the narrative in your journal. Go on. Do it. Right now. Flip those pages open, grab an inky pen (that will stain your hands for sure), and write down what happened and how you feel. Then when you're done, turn to a new page and make a list of ways to take action and shift the current narrative. Give yourself hope! The Situation: "I failed my chemistry test for sure. Boooo, I never study anything right. edbiebfifejfh." Rewriting the narrative: "Okay, that chemistry test was not it BUT we get our results back tomorrow; I'll make note of what went wrong and ask for help from my professor. Hey, maybe I did better than I thought. It's going to be okay, because next time I'll be more prepared."

💛 Comfort yourself. Sometimes you put in your best and everything just works, woohoooo! But sometimes, nothing works even after your best, and you may not even have the strength to journal it out...because your eyes are so swollen from all the crying you've done. So, it's time to give yourself a big hug. I mean, yeah, literally, but also like metaphorically speaking. I'm talking: watching Casablanca in your pjs, calling your safe-space-bestie for a good complain-cry-crash-out, blasting spicy music and shaking your sad booty 'til sunrise. Be wild and let it all out, so you can pick up the pieces later with a clear head.

You've tried, babe. The effort has been effort-ed. And yeah you may not have gotten a gold star on that paper, but I'm here to tell you that you are the real star. For better or worse, your best is magical.

Don't give up on yourself.
