Watching TikTok try and rewrite fandom history by saying fandom culture was created by teenage girls makes me eye twitch to an extent I’ve never felt it twitch before. Btw I have to speak my truth. Deanna Troi is not useless on the bridge. She is underutilized in the plot points yes and I don't think we ever got to see exercise her full powers. But she is NOT useless on the bridge. People hate her on saying things that are "obvious" (eg. she says she feels that the visibly agitated person is agitated) but that is literally no different than the person at a console that says "we have been hit!" or "the shields are holding". Like these are obvious too bc yes we have been hit that's probably why we're all over the floor. But the person is saying that bc the sensors they're looking at recorded a hit and their job is to verbally read these to the captain. It being "obvious" isn't the point it's not supposed to be a groundbreaking observation they're making a report of what their station received.

And Deanna is basically just another sensor and she's reporting what she got!! And yes her saying a visibly angry person is angry actually is Useful because if they weren't feeling the emotion they're projecting (lying) that would be worthwhile. So her making the report is useful information for Picardddd

also i think this has been figured out at this point but the whole "i miss queerbaiting" convo is like... the part of queerbaiting that ruled was because the show was usually putting forward two dudes, those two dudes got to have character arcs and motivations and writing behind both of them. they could both be interesting individually. because neither of them were shunted into 'disposable romantic interest' for each other.

but if a gay couple on tv is now supposed to be there, writers can fall for the m/f trap of 'only one of these characters needs to be fleshed out, the other is just here to explicitly be the love interest and maybe die later' except now they can both be dudes. it's not that queerbaiting was inherently better it's that unfortunately people have always been bad at understanding what makes fictional romance compelling, which is 'who the fuck are these people in the first place and why should i care'

Yesterday, one of my preschoolers came up to me very concerned, and said, “Miss ____, this book doesn’t have any pages!”

Now, this kid is only three, and I can’t always understand what he says because he’s still so little. However, he carries himself and has the conversational lilt of an 80-year-old academic, so I absolutely believed him. Also, like any library, not all of our books have been as gently used as one might like, so there’s always a chance that the pages of the book this kid was holding actually had fallen out somewhere, and he was only holding the cover. I hurried over to see if this was the case and he opened the book for me, still very concerned.

He had only opened to the end sheet, that blank page at the front of a book. I turned the page for him to reveal the title page. This look of absolute relief crossed his face and he went, “Oh, silly me. I didn’t look hard enough!”

I love kids.
