Selina's New Kittens

Once again. A new DPxDC idea/prompt.

Selina wasn't expecting this when she decided to have some fun and do what she does best.

She just meant to sweet talk her way into Master's gala/party. Flirt and get info, maybe some blackmail. Steal away the rare cat themed artifact he had recently gotten (and also steal away his actual cat, such a lovely little diva it is too). then she was going to disappear into the night like always.

So...

Selina casted her eyes into the mirror of her car and could see the tiny children she had rescued from Master's hidden basement lab. All but one was asleep, the oldest out of them, although she seemed to be losing that fight from the way her head was falling forward, eyes closing but would jerk herself back awake when she realized she was falling asleep.

Curled up as hard and as much as they could towards the little redhead was three dark haired children, Selina mused that they'd fit right in with Bruce and his little bats/birds.

Two were near identical boys, though one seemed to be much paler than the other and if she remembered right one had red eyes and the other had blue, and the last one of the sleeping kids was a tiny toddler, a girl she heard was named 'Ellie' from the others.

Selina took note that the red head, Jazz, had finally fallen asleep a few minutes later. With a deep breath as she drove further and further away from that... that insane Fruitloop (she overheard the two boys call him that as they ran to her car) Master's place, she blindly reached for her phone and pressed a single digit on the screen, knowing it will connect to her car and call up the only person she can trust to help her with this.

"Selina." came the gravely voice after a single ring, sounds like she caught him on patrol but he seemed to be in a spot where he was okay to say her actual name over coms or she caught him before his night shift started.

"Hello Darling, I need your help with some kittens I found and to help me... Put away their terrible old owner."

🍎: "By the way Ace, didn't you say the other night that you were into the prefect? What happened to that?"

❤️: "About that... Yeah maybe you should just forget about that."

🍎: "Ehhh? Why? Did they reject you?"

♠️: "That's because he's a coward."

❤️: "Shut up! I ain't no coward! You know you'd do the same in my shoes."

🐺, snickering: "That's exactly how a coward is, you know."

❤️: "No! They're just... Not worth the effort."

🐺: "So you're a jerk who can't be damned to put in the effort."

❤️: "I resent that."

🐺: "You gotta fight for what you want, you know. Nothing's over until it's over."

🍎: "What he said! You're already close friends so it's kinda a waste, isn't it?"

❤️: "BECAAAAUSE."

Saying that, he put up two index fingers on either side of his head; as if to motion the image of a devil.

🍎: "They're a bitch?"

❤️: "This stupid-- no. It's their other option."

The other boys stared at him blankly.

❤️, rolling his eyes: "Dragon."

The first years mouthed a slow "ahh".

🍎: "So sorry."

🐺: "My condolences."

❤️: "Hey! Where's the faith you put in me earlier? And here I thought we were friends."

Ok I am just so curious as to how Caine’s ai software or programming works (or what sort of content he was trained on anyways) because

On stories where high-stakes stuff happens? Action esc stories? I find it interesting for this “game” setting Caine is always choosing these highly stressful adventures because he wants to capture the circus members attention and hearts, an audience (which I know in a meta way is us the viewer but that’s not the point of this post) but like it just does not work towards his goal of making the members happy and he keeps sticking to what he knows or think he knows will make them happy- he tries to take in suggestions and then is like oh shit:

I’M not working, what I know isn’t true. Nope. Time to think about what more to do.

And I also like this theme of self-worth issues that keep coming up

Caine is NOT like him but I wonder if he was trained in a similar way to psychopathic ai bot researchers trained on Reddit content (as in, just fed a certain type of content which makes him keep going back to certain adventures and it’s making him bias to what he think the circus members want vs what they actually want)

Very much an ai vs human situation, assumed wants vs actual wants and needs

And tangentially related I wonder if the turning point is gonna be Caine getting so genuinely frustrated with the circus members he ends up getting violent/mean in a dangerous way (kinda hinted at in ep.4 with Jax and Zooble conversing about Caine)

A while ago I was messaging my partner at the time and I said something like "I don't think I have that many different voices" and then they took a while to respond but came back with a list of nearly 20 different voices they'd noticed me use like "the voice you use when you're being silly with your brother" and "the voice you use when you're trying to be careful about what you say" and "the voice you use when you're feeling sleepy"

This was almost 5 years ago now and I still think about it regularly, I hadn't ever thought anyone could be paying that much attention to me before then.

That's what I mean when I talk about being known and that's what I mean when I'm thinking about Robby/Abbot and the reason it's so easy for me to see them as a couple because they so clearly know each other. So much of what we see between them is unspoken, communicated through shorthand or even just a look.

I hope that makes sense to anyone, I just love those two and I love how deeply and yet subtly they know&love each other.

Seward's bone deep desire to run away from the asylum is not exactly surprising. There have been a lot of really good meta posts about how the return of Van Helsing into his life is the turning point where we see the caring and good side of him and how we can interpret his life as a student in Amersterdam as one of freedom and happiness. How he is part of the tragedy of manners, how strict social expectations allow Dracula to persist, and how they only exacerbate the unhappiness of the characters.

And I think the tragedy of Seward is that, really, he should not be the head of an asylum. It's a job that brings him no joy, and he's BAD at it. We can all recognize that if your first reaction to going back to work is "What if I just leave it all." That isn't a healthy work environment.

Now, in the modern day, the ability to pick and choose a work environment, even to leave one that is damaging your mental health, is a privilege. (IT SHOULDNT BE, but it is). And, although it is definitely reaching crisis levels in modern times, major changes in your career have almost always been difficult (unless you are really rich, or a particular brand of academic in the 17th-18th century, or both).

Seward can't just leave and become a surgeon. To give up the lofty position of "Head of an Asylum" would be unthinkable in the 1890s, especially for a reason like "Being here is basically turning me into the Joker." Like, how would Seward explain that in polite society? Would they accept that reasoning? Would they create salacious gossip if they didn't? Can Seward leave his position without losing a great amount of social capital?

Probably not.

His rise to head of an asylum, as many have pointed out, was meteoric, to say the least. It has afforded him status and respect and also left him deeply, deeply fucked up. And he can't leave!

I think his desperate attempts to quantify Renfield's behaviors into a new mental illness are telling in this regard. Maybe he is too used to having to meet some sort of expectation, and now he thinks this is the logical next step (It's NOT, but I digress). The feeling of having to keep performing above expectations, grasping at straws to do so, and subsequently burning oneself out (as well as others around you) and engaging in unethical practices? Idk. It sounds like something that would happen today. (tbh there are probably a ton of Sewards out there today, as there are still systemic problems within the mental health system that allow for the dehumanizing and abuse of patients).

It doesn't excuse his behavior. Nothing he does to Renfield is excusable, but I think it does explain some of the *why*. He isn't just cruel for cruelty's sake.

So, tldr I guess: I think reading Seward as someone who got stuck on a career path that he realized was unfufilling and that he ends up hating. Social conventions restrict him from just quitting without and a (socially acceptable) good reason to do so, and a lifetime of being regarded as one of the smartest people in the room means he can not allow himself to fail. Unfortunately, this also means he can not admit when his actions or his ideas are wrong when it comes to his job.

(But he can show that uncertainty FOR Lucy, and TO Arthur and Van Helsing, which speaks his trust and love for them)

Janet's funeral is so funny to me. Sure, it's a sad moment for Tim, but I cannot stop imagine how everyone else, aside him, Dick, Bruce and Jack (because he is not really there as he is recovering, or he would be so fucking lost too) must be like "okay, wtf is going on?"

Because Bruce Wayne and his ward/son are here and they are treating Tim Drake like a family member. They are standing right by his side and trying to support him through this, while the kid's actual dad is RIGHT HERE in a wheelchair. You cannot tell me the other guests did not gossip about this, about the Drakes and how close Tim is to the Waynes, how Bruce Wayne is looking after him, and nobody knew that Bruce Wayne was so close to Tim Drake, but he is clearly isn't close to Jack. And Tim is living with Wayne while Jack is in the hospital. And all of this being revealed at Janet's funeral. Maybe, Tim is not Jack's son but Bruce's, the result of an affair, and with all that happened it has been revealed to the three men... Maybe Bruce is really a pedophile, a rumor that did exist when he took in his kids, and he is grooming poor little Tim, a perfect target currently... Maybe Bruce's way of dealing with the death of his boy is to steal our children the moment we look the other way...

Just, the friends of the Drakes must have so many questions after seeing Bruce Wayne and his son at this funeral, standing by Tim and supporting him through this.

i personally think it’s so funny how amongst all the people in doltown, the main two who are vying for vani’s heart and have reciprocation ( or a form of it ) is whitney and the fuckass doctor, harper.

like whitney is self explanatory, i’ve went into depths, details of their dynamic. meanwhile, vani just started bothering harper for simply blackmail & a way to get deeper in the cult besides just being reliant on avery. which, if i had a nickel for every time vani fell hard for what started as a bit, i’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.
