some transparents of tomotake kinoshita's character art from the versus books' final fantasy vii ultimate guide! in order, these are from pages 3, 17, 110, 30, 31 & 47.

while probably best known (-within the vii fanbase) for his beautiful cover works below,

he also did the art within the book, including the doodles above + these little 'fuller' pics below and the character guide artwork! (which, unfortunately, is more of a pain to cut out.)

while now the versus' guide can be a little pricey if you're looking to get your hands on it physically, it is freely available to view on the internet archive! as i recommend with anyone even lightly into preservation, back it up personally while you can :^)

+ og post edit to clear up a common misconception: the versus' guide was not official ffvii material! though the book and many of the other guide works were all incredibly iconic (which is where i believe the misunderstanding comes from), this one is quite literally called The Completely Unauthorized Final Fantasy VII Ultimate Guide with multiple disclaimers that it's unaffiliated with square in any way. :p

just got the most wonderful notes on my latest art post. thank you so much..

figured it’s nice to share a little bit of behind the scenes for my thinking process, so here you have it!

i think my understanding of anthy comes from a place of being more susceptible to that kind of abuse. there is no such thing as a literal rose bride and a castle with the magic to revolutionize the world in real life, but the concept of being used as a posession to own for cishet men so that they can climb this ladder of power really resonates with my existence. there’s the extra layer of exoticism and objectification i don’t go through because i’m pale though! but i understand how this process goes. i’ve never had a boyfriend nor been treated like anthy in the show by both men and women alike, but i see a specific type of harm that surrounds me and keeps repeating itself that i’m not invincible against, so i tried my best to think about that as i sketched out the idea.

also given the implications and visualization of anthy’s character suffering through constant physical abuse in the episodes that can be pretty graphic most times (i think i vaguely remember trigger warnings for sexual abuse on later episodes —not graphic thank god but it is implied and quite symbolic in imagery—) there’s an angle to her portrayal i think it’s best to avoid in my creations: the act of anthy being actively harmed (in a literal way). i believe there’s a more responsible and poignant way to portray her pain that doesn’t attach itself to human morbidness, because her pain is already showed in the anime and very much a real thing that does happen in real life, portrayed through a character. characters ≠ people, but the themes (their backbone!) they carry are real, otherwise how would we even connect to the fiction? so i like being careful with how i approach what i’ve seen of her story.

it’s very lovely to get those notes too, since i’ve been struggling to come up with compelling imagery in my artwork since 2021 i think.. but RGU’s visual language is truly inspiring. it gives me new ideas for my own compositions :-]

we were sitting on the floor and i was cutting out tiny pictures to make a collage for a friend's birthday. you were on your phone and you laughed about something, and i was still in love with you then, so i asked what had you giggling.

"sorry. i was just..." you took a moment and went back to texting. "i was telling someone about how you're afraid of the dark."

i'm afraid of the dark because something bad happened. "oh." i felt a little slinky of shame crawl down my throat.

you glanced up, and maybe it showed on my face, because you rolled your eyes and held the phone to the side casually so i could see the group chat. "what? was it a secret?"

i looked down to the scissors in my hand. "i just..." no, it's not a secret. it just felt like something private, something serious. saying why would you tell someone that just feels like an accusation. it's unfair. i honestly am not even ashamed of it, it's just a fact about my person that i don't usually share.

what a strange experience. is this a human thing or a generational thing? for our grandparents: did they need to worry about how quickly someone can just... share your personal information? again, i didn't even really have a true objection. what could i say? i want any person in my life to feel they can be honest with their friends. it's not like i said don't tell anyone this.

i cut out another letter to complete the rainbow happy birthday, started hunting for the exclamation mark. i heard you sigh dramatically.

"don't make a big deal about this," you said.

this entire conversation was a pattern for us, and this was when we got to my least favorite part of the pattern. i would get my feelings hurt in some oblique not-technically-terrible way, and then it would be making a big deal about something. you'd get frustrated for me for being soft, but i was born soft. you knew i was soft when you pierced me. it's one of the things that made controlling me so easy.

"i'm not," i felt my voice crack. the question came without my wanting. "why are you guys talking about me?" and why are you saying that thing? why not like - i'm telling them how you're generous and kind and pretty.

you let out this low, tragic groan. "oh my god." you tossed the phone away from your body. "there, see? i just won't talk to them if you don't like it."

the rest of the hour went the way it always went, between us: i said i don't actually mind if you talk to your friends but -, you found a way to call my minor expression of discomfort "being dramatic." you got upset that i had been offended. i ended up apologizing, even though i hadn't actually done anything.

afterwards, you picked up the phone again. after texting for a little bit, you snorted. "okay," you said, "but it is kind of funny you're afraid of the dark. i mean, when you think about it."

I was reading cartledge's book on thebes and every now and then the spartan focuses wrt to the pantheon of gods comes up. sparta has nothing to do with this except for where it does, but apollo karneios was discussed and that got my attention, which circled back to paris, and then I started thinking about the paris + apollo link

I also started thinking about narrative rejections bc paris has a funky absence in the iliad that's giving a kind of...a vibe. your parents shouldn't have had you, the story doesn't want you around, but oh boy are you there anyway, manifested into existence. no matter what, doom must manifest in flesh form. it's a narrative necessity, the actual incident (the judgement) is secondary.
