Thoughts on Season 7 Storytelling Technique

In lieu of trying to wipe the season 6 finale from my mind, I have been thinking a lot about the new season 7 storytelling technique that Stephen has been alluding to recently. I know everyone is speculating that it is a flashforward of sorts, but this almost seems too obvious to me. So I stared thinking ,”what do I really want to see from this point on in Arrow?”- and I came up with this,” I want to see what is truly going on in the hearts and minds of the characters” Specifically, Oliver/Felicity/and Dig. I don’t know if this is a storytelling technique, but what if, instead of flash forwards , we got dream sequences or wish sequences from the hearts and minds of Oliver and Felicity specifically. They are walking 2 parallel but separate and connected storylines next season for what may be close to 1/3 to 1/2 of it. I think it would be sooo interesting to see the wishes of their hearts and the musings of their thoughts/ souls as they go through the trials and tribulations of being separated physically but still united in every other way. ( maybe this explains the baby reference that DR made at HVFF - not an actual occurrence in present time/ not an actual flash forward to the future/ but a wish or desire by either Oliver or Felicity of where they had hoped their love and lives together would lead them) it doesn’t mean that the baby won’t happen in the future , but it doesn’t commit the Arrow writers to providing it either next season.

Final thoughts- I am so tired of Arrow sacrificing character growth and focus for plot action- the action sequences have become boring and monotonous to me. I can only watch Oliver beat the crap out of the “bad guys” so much without wishing and wanting something so much more deeper from the show that I have come to know and love over the past 6 seasons. I WANT TO SEE OLIVER AND FELICITY( and Dig) from the inside out. I want their hearts, minds and souls laid bared to me. We have not gotten that in so long. I have great hope that Beth Schwartz and the new writers will bring this back to Arrow!!

Why Arrow means so much to me...

I tried watching Arrow from the first episode with my husband. We absolutely HATED the voiceovers - totally turned us off. We stopped watching and I didn’t start again until the middle of season 2 in early 2014.

I had been having a really hard time. You see, my husband and I had been trying to start a family without any luck. And it was getting pretty depressing...every month, realizing I failed again, unable to do something women had been doing and were expected to do since forever...get pregnant.

So I re-discovered Arrow (and discovered Olicity!) and binged it to catch-up. I was hooked. I wasn’t on social media so I didn’t have the fandom yet for another year, and then didn’t really start interacting for around another year after that. But I had my hands full anyway. I went on to have 5 IUI treatments in 2014 - all failures. I burrowed into Arrow even more - watched and rewatched episodes to escape life.

When Oliver got kicked off the mountain in 3x09, I was distraught for Arrow and Olicity...and me. I found Tumblr and Twitter and Stephen’s Facebook page. I gobbled up fan fiction and couldn’t believe I had gone so long without any of it. I started reading @jbuffyangel reviews and it gave me hope.

The fandom gave me hope.

Olicity gave me hope.

Arrow gave me hope.

I don’t even know why. It really doesn’t make sense. But somehow, the escape let me process my feelings in a way I couldn’t without it.

In 2016, my husband and I decided to try IVF. He actually had decent insurance (the 5 IUIs were all out of pocket expenses and were expensive enough), and we thought the new job with the better insurance was a sign to us. Even though we still had to pay a lot of money out of pocket, the increased chances of conception were worth the try. Two failed IVFs later and I was more numb than I could ever have thought.

Season 5 was so hard for that reason. Olicity was in such a dire place, as much as I was emotionally. It caused me to actually start interacting with people here on Tumblr. I found fandom friends who are sweet and caring and loved what I loved about Arrow. Throughout season 5 and 6, I breathed in the love of virtual strangers and found so much solace in that escape.

My husband and I decided to give up the dream of a family. It was too hard on our mental health. I saw a therapist briefly to try to process the grief of the death of a dream. I held on to the perspective that it could definitely be worse - my husband and I were still a team and still loved each other and still had so many blessings. We had great jobs, great friends, great home - really privileged lives. We would find another dream to pursue by deciding to build our dream house. I dropped off Tumblr because I had so much going on with work (a promotion!) and the new house (managing a house build is not easy). But I figured I’d pick it back up once the season started.

Then in July before season 7 started, I was so tired and couldn’t keep my eyes open. I chalked it up to the stress of the job and the house, when I realized at 8:30am after I decided to work from home that I may be pregnant. I thought FOR SURE I am pregnant. I bought a pregnancy test. That sucker turned positive before I could even stop peeing on the stick. I couldn’t believe it. My husband and I were in disbelief and over the moon! It couldn’t be! But we heard so many stories about how letting go of the dream sometimes helps it come true.

The dream lasted about a month. I miscarried. And I really haven’t recovered emotionally.

There had been so much joy and anger and angst in the fandom all year and I’ve been here, but not really as present as I’d like to be. I haven’t really been present in anything...just going through the motions hoping I get back to my old self.

Then I hear the news today and watch Stephen’s Facebook live and I am so sad. I am sad when I think that maybe the people whose stories I follow on AO3 or blogs I read on Tumblr may stop posting. I am sad when I think I won’t see a great love story like Olicity on my screen anymore. I am sad when I think how I haven’t been as present as I would like to be for every second of the past season because we’re running out of time.

And so once again I am thankful for Arrow and its fandom because it just helps give me the right perspective. It allows me a different way to express myself and process my emotions. I cried a lot today knowing it will end soon. It’s nice to feel something again when I’ve been numb for so long.

I am going to try to be present every day in my life, in this show, in this fandom until the end. Thank you for inspiring me to do so.

Ohhh! I really like this!!!!!!

Dear Stan…

It was late, last night. I had just gotten into bed, when my brain decided to start theorising about Arrow. It’s 2am Brain! Let me sleep, dammit!

Anyhow, let’s see what I can remember lol.

It started out about Stan the fan. @nalla-madness and @almondblossomme had been talking about whether Stan was ‘the demon’ and I was leaning towards 'yes’. The last couple of seasons have made me very suspicious about new characters on this show. They either turn out to be badly written, hypocritical assholes. Or they’re evil. So chances are that Stan is in one of those two categories for me.

However, I suddenly remembered that we are in a new age of Arrow. With a new showrunner. (Praise Beth) I no longer go to bed ranting about stupid Arrow writers messing up my favourite show. I go to bed trying to figure out what the hell is going to happen this season on the show! Progress.

My theory, you ask?

Stan is NOT The Demon.

He’s actually a genuinely good guy and Green Arrow fanboy. They exist! Who knew?

The writers just want us to think he’s fishy to keep us away from what is really going on this season.

DIAZ IS NOT THE BIG BAD THIS SEASON.

There.

I said it.

I think he’s going to be around for a while, because he is crucial to Oliver’s Redemption. But he is NOT the big bad.

Oliver lost the city and failed to stop Diaz last season. This season he won’t. Being in prison will give him a new perspective on criminals. One that he will apply to dealing with Diaz.

Oliver will finally defeat his worst enemy. No. Not Diaz. Don’t make me laugh.

Oliver’s worst enemy is himself. Diaz is his monster made flesh. Defeat Diaz and he will finally shed that weight. He will finally be able to fully embrace being a true hero in the light.

So, back to Stan and what is really going on this season. Who is the big bad this season?

ARGUS.

I’ve been banging this drum for a while now and it’s really starting to come together. In my head, anyway. I’m excited. If the show is really going down this path, I am all in.

ARGUS has always been shown to be a shady organisation. They do some good, but more and more I’ve come to believe, that the future that Legends of Tomorrow showed us last season will come to fruition on our show.

I’m not talking about the future where Old Man Oliver only had one arm and was hiding in the bunker.

I’m talking about the future Zari comes from. A future where ARGUS had taken over the government. Where Anti-Meta laws were enforced and experiments were taking place on prisoners.

This season we’ve seen the show move more players over to ARGUS. We now have Lyla, John, and Curtis working there. We’ve seen Lyla suspicious of her superiors. We’ve heard that we’ll see more about ARGUS hierarchy being anti vigilantes this season.

So how does Stan fit into all this?

In the premiere, Stan mentioned that he had been framed for murder. Again, my first thought was suspicion. But what if he was genuinely set up? By ARGUS.

We don’t know enough of his backstory yet. We don’t know who he is. Why would ARGUS set him up? I don’t know the answer yet. It could be so they had a mole. Told him to get close to Oliver and report back. Or it could be because of something more sinister.

In the promo for 7x04 we see Oliver getting shot up with something as he moves down to Level 2. It could be completely harmless. Or it could be part of ARGUS’s experiments.

I’m starting to think that Oliver is in Slabside for a reason…because ARGUS put him there. They wanted him there. To experiment on him. This is the beginning of their underground operation. Slabside in the comics is a meta human prison. We haven’t seen any Metas yet. Although, both Brick and Sampson had some kind of super strength at one point. Also, I vaguely recall that there were some metas who were not in Central City when the particle accelerater exploded. Could it be ARGUS is behind it?

And now Diaz is injecting himself with super strength. We know that Diaz somehow fights Oliver in prison. Could ARGUS then decide to keep him there. Could this be why he’s a season regular this year? He and Oliver swap places.

The book 'The Count of Monte Cristo’ has been subtly referenced quite a lot so far this season. I think it was @almondblossomme who theorised that Oliver would fake his death to escape prison just like in the book. I think this could be a possibility. If Oliver is being experimented on, he could fake himself dead after a procedure gone wrong. He knows how to fake die. Remember season 1?

Maybe something will happen to Stan and Oliver couldn’t save him. So he promises to get justice for his friend. He looks into what happened to Stan once out of prison, and learns of ties to ARGUS. Leading him on a collision course with John.

John needs a wake up call and this could very well be it. John stays working as a double agent. And later in the season the truth is revealed. ARGUS rise. They take over military style, and Oliver becomes the leader of the resistance.

The New Green Arrow

Who is he/she?

I’m still going with Emiko Queen; Oliver’s half sister.

The list?

Could it have something to do with ARGUS? Could there be a connection?

The Future.

Why is Roy on the island?

Because ARGUS took over.

He asked William who sent him.

He thought it was ARGUS.

Why would Oliver and Felicity just leave William?

Because they were being hunted by ARGUS.

Why would William have all this money?

Because he works for ARGUS.

Why would Maya, possibly Queen, be anti vigilante?

Because she works for ARGUS and hunts them.

That’s all I’ve got. And can I just say that I started out just thinking about who Stan could be. Everything else just seemed to start connecting as I was writing it lol.

It’s just a theory. I’m probably completely wrong. Maybe it’s because I refuse to believe that they are going to continue a full season of boring snooze fest Diaz. I don’t buy it. Not even Beth can sell it to me. It just doesn’t work.

Umpteenth theory about Prometheus' true identity.

Okay, last night, while I was discussing with the dearies THIS THEORY by @almondblossomme where she claims that Malcolm Merlyn is Prometheus, my head made click and remade an old theory.

I'm sure I'm wrong, and the retractors are going to give me the same old argument to refute it, but... what if instead of Malcolm, It's Tommy who's behind the mask. I know, I know, we've been speculating about this possibility since the season started, and I know by heart the reasons why he can't be (Colin being busy with Chicago med and blah blah blah...) That's the old part of my theory.

What's new this time is that it wouldn't be a Pit!Tommy, which is how most of us explained how he's alive in the old theory. In this one, I explain it, making a little crossover with Legends of Tomorrow. If The Flash and Flashpoint affected Arrow too, why not this, right? In LoT, Malcolm is one of the villains this season as part of the Legion of Doom. They're looking for the Spear of Destiny, and with it, they'll rewrite reality, changing their past or future, depending on which baddie you're talking about.

I saw somewhere (don't remember where and I don't know if it's true) that Eddie will appear on the Flash at some point of what's left of this season, also LL will be in the season finale of LoT, so I'm guessing that Malcolm, Darhk, and Eobard are getting the Spear momentarily, rewriting reality and getting what they want. Eobard will bring Eddie back, so he's not erased from the timeline anymore; Darhk makes sure that he survives his final fight with the Green Arrow or maybe he chooses another city to carry on with Genesis, and Malcolm probably would like that on 2013 he succeeded with the undertaking and nobody found out that he was behind it, and more importantly to my theory, Tommy didn't die.

Of course, the legends won't let that stick forever, 'cause if not, it'd not be a heroes' show (maybe they take the spear back and rewrite reality as it was before or whatever). In any case, as things are never that simple or perfectly fixed, what if some little details changed forever, like Tommy's life status. it becomes a time aberration.

If that all happens, and Tommy is alive, he had 4 whole years to prepare. Malcolm would have helped him, probably putting him in contact with Talia so she could train him.

I know this is a long shot, but as we all know, In arrowverse everything is possible.

Very Scary Spec for Season 7 of Arrow

I have been ruminating over a very scary spec for a little while now regarding Season 7 of Arrow.

What if Oliver really does get convicted, gets sentenced to prison , breaks out and continues to fight crime as a fugitive?

This would certainly change how Arrow looks next Season

Believe me when I say that I am 99.9 % sure that this doesn’t happen and 100% sure I don’t want it to happen - especially if Felicity is pregnant.

@jules85 @nalla-madness I read SA interview, he clearly said it's not Felicity cause he said things between Oliver and Felicity will get resolve and they will accept these new persons of them.

David said recently, it was not Lyla, the writers were thinking about it but they didn't go that route ( shame on the writers that even cross their minds )

Maybe it was Curtis, he was close to Diggle now and before was Felicity .... Maybe him...

I was thinking that this season has a lot of reference to Season 1 of Arrow in terms of dialogues, actions and characters coming back... I would say probably someone would die during season finale but someone or more than one will actual live in the FF.... Maybe...!

A Terrific ending

Does anyone else think that Curtis is doomed this season?

I was freaking out the other day that Diaz was going to kill Lyla until David eased my fears.

But given what we know, I’m thinking that Curtis will be the one for the chop.

The cast is too big right now, and I just noticed that it added Sea Shimooka as a regular. Her name was in between the Lizard and KC. So someone has to go. Right?

We know Dinah and Rene are alive in the flashforwards. No mention of Curtis.

MG said that Curtis has a big part to play in the crossover. Could be a swansong for the character.

SA said that Oliver not killing Diaz will have consequences for someone he’s close to. We all thought John. But it could be Curtis. I don’t think they know what to do with him. I don’t think they ever have. Maybe it’s time to say goodbye. Curtis’ death could be a springboard for Diggle to get his head out of his ass.
