How much sympathy do you think Cass extends to her younger self?
INTERESTING QUESTION KOL!!! This is actually a question where canon slightly differs from my own preference, but I'll tackle canon first. In modern day, solidified by Batgirl (2024) #5, Cass feels a great deal of sympathy for her younger self:
Tumblr media
The hugging + the line before this panel ("maybe I can save") + the "no control of her life" indicates to me that she sympathises with and pities her younger self, understanding that she was forced to kill and it wasn't really her fault. She still sees her younger self as guilty (she frames it as 'saving' her younger self, not accepting her younger self), but she does show such compassion here to young Cass. This follows on from Batgirl (2008) #6, where she lays the blame squarely on David Cain:
Tumblr media
In both this and Batgirl #5, Cass highlights her younger self's lack of agency. I think modern Cass does truly feel sorry for her younger self, in a way she didn't before.
I think this is a sweet and natural progression of her character arc, but gosh if I don't love early Cass and the way she looked at her younger self. Because the Shiva fight solved her death wish, but I personally don't think it resolved the resentment she felt towards her younger self. I think it's very interesting that even in Batgirl #5, her younger self isn't really 'her', but someone external - someone she can 'save' like another criminal. To an extent, Cass has never been able to fully reconcile that younger self with who she is now.
Tumblr media
In Batgirl (2000) #25, Shiva kills Cass and fulfils her death wish, so current Cass has 'atoned' (or suffered appropriately) for her murder. She realises that death isn't the solution for any murderer, including herself. But young Cass didn't go through that punishment or redemption. When Babs shows Cass her young self in the holo room, Babs says "that's you, isn't it." Cass doesn't reply until young Cass moves, and then she screams "STOP!". Obviously the 'stop' refers to young Cass killing Faizul, but in light of Babs' question, in a way Cass is begging for that young girl not to be her. She wants to stop her younger self, and she wants to stop being her younger self.
Tumblr media
Batgirl Secret Files and Origins
I wonder if part of her also resents her younger self's happiness pre-kill. Just personally, while I like her having evolved past these early days and being able to embrace her younger self like in BG '24 #5, I really do prefer the messier feelings. In Cass' mind her younger self is associated with David Cain, with the "perfect killer", with a happiness built on lies - she definitely feels sympathetic, but that sympathy should be (in my opinion) strained by discomfort and a bit of blame.
My ideal amount of Cass sympathy for her younger self is Batgirl Secret Files and Origins. She tells a boy "you did... one bad thing. But you're... not," and when he asks whether she really believes that, she answers, "I try to." She hasn't fully forgiven her younger self, she might never fully forgive her younger self, but she's trying her best to sympathise with her anyway. It's imperfect, painful, effortful sympathy, and that's what makes it so beautiful!

Since you like both series have you ever considered what godly parent/canon the Batman characters would be in? I mean, I know it wouldn’t work too well considering heavily established backstories tied to dead parents (I feel like Duke is the only character I could plop into the PJO universe and his backstory would be nearly the same), but in a if you had to or they took a quiz for it kind of way?
ohh. duke would kill it at camp half blood. damn i wish i could draw. i think an AU of this type would have to overtake the heroing thing, yep, full AU, no capes. i think it being an actual story with intention would make results shift quite a bit, so i've just assigned them a god mostly by personality/vibe, sort of removed from context in both universes.
Bruce: Pluto, the roman version of Hades. This one has a more immediate connection with riches, I believe, and the harsher, more disciplined attitude of the roman pantheon suits Bruce better imo. Bit obvious. Nemesis would've been a good choice, too.
Dick: Apollo. Tried to search for an underdog there, but most other options were missing something and Apollo's multifaceted, lowkey powerful but silly-and-goofy kind of demeanor won out.
Jason: Athena. This one I'm not entirely happy with, but I think it's due to the way Jason changes. I still think the brains/stories/crafting/warfare combo is the most suitable for him.
Tim: Hermes. This one is a little sad to me because I think he would be quite at home in the cabin with so many other children after growing up alone. Tim's always been a little squirrelly to me, and there's a certain malleability to Hermes that reminds me of him. My runner up here was Aphrodite, for her persuasive capabilities.
Steph: Nike. I keep going back and forth between her and Hephaestus (volcanos, blacksmiths and sculptors--I don't know why it's giving me Steph, but it is), but I think Nike fits the vibe better.
Duke: Jupiter. This is kind of another obvious one, but I think Duke's got enough mettle and leadership in him, as well as presenting a really good face as the daytime hero. I gave him the roman version because that is the most respectable one lol I was actually thinking of Theia, the titan of Light and Sight, but I thought that'd be cheating.
Cass: Nyx, in her roman form. This one has a little more backstory: I think Cass is a demigod, but she's skilled to the point that she's sort of in the same level as Nyx's godly children. She eventually joins the Hunters of Artemis, though, and I think Artemis likes her very, very much.
Damian: Demeter. Would this be a wild card? I Think Dami holds much gentleness within him. But there is also a certain severity and viciousness in what chaos earth can wreck. I also don't think Damian likes her very much lol
Babs: Hecate. Technology is a form of magic, walk with me. I also think Hecate's manipulations line up with Barbara's way of proceeding, though I'm thinking mostly of her time as Oracle.

Snow Day
Okay so this post by @broosepayne  had a CHOKEHOLD on me until I did something about about it. It was supposed to be short.. like a couple of paragraphs. ANYWAYS HAVE THIS THING I GUESS? (ignore all the errors I wrote this in a fit of hyperfixation. )
Bruce’s first snowball fight wasn’t really a snowball fight. It was Clark tossing a single snowball in his general direction and the powder bursting across his armor before falling back to the ground. Clark said it counted. Bruce wants it to count. He’s not so sure it does.
Bruce’s first real snowball fight takes a long time, but the timeframe didn’t really matter to Bruce because snowball fights weren’t important and they never were. If they were as imperative to childhood as Clark insists that they were, then they would have shown up in one of his parenting books, and what about the children that lived in warmer climates? What were they to do? What then Clark? Check and Mate. (There’s something in Clark’s eye when Bruce mentions this that he pretends not to see. One that’s plagued him since that night in the alley. A deep sorrow that lies somewhere between pity and sympathy, like avoiding getting hit in the face by something cold and wet isn’t something to be proud of and Bruce ignores how it makes everything burn restlessly underneath his skin.)

It's time at long last to delve into a certain secondary story in Detective Comics #1083 by Alex Paknadel and Robbi Rodriguez and my thoughts on it.
I SO did not expect to see a secondary Cass story as Ram V closes out his Tec run (but maybe I should've given he's let others give EVERYONE their due of his run).
And here ironically, a month before the character's 25th anniversary we get Cass.
I must confess reading the story drawn by Rodriguez along with Cass's appearance in #1082. It's got me reminiscing on Batgirls again.
It does make me truly miss that series. Even with the rewards that have been this run, Birds of Prey, and Spirit World.
However, unlike the prior two series, this one does a DEEP dive into the mindset of Cass and where she's at during this point of the run.
Some truly meaty stuff we get here character-wise.
The story continues where we left Cass in #1082, still roaming Gotham freely and making sure the city remembers the symbol of the bat.
Tumblr media
I do adore any time a criminal mistakes her for Batman. Just another notch to add that she'd make a great successor to Bruce as Batman.
Likewise, I do enjoy HOW she's introduced. Going to town on the criminal lot and us the reader seeing her viewpoint on subduing them.
Yet, unlike the prior story, not everything is hunky-dory with Cass. With a few words of choice in the narration boxes, you can tell something is off with Cass.
And it's fascinating she sees relief in reuniting with probably one of the beings who can "understand" her-- Lady Shiva.
Probably the only downside I have with the story is this recurring cycle of Cass instantly mistrusting her, when really the last two stories with Shiva, her mom has been trying.
Tumblr media
Still, they "talk" in the only way daughter/mother truly knows: fighting. Instantly, Shiva picks up what been clued to us the reader in the beginning: Cass is not well.
Though unlike the reader, Shiva lays out thickly what it is.
Since the Orgham have taken over Gotham they've been trying to wipe away the memory of the Bat via the. Yes, we know given a few issues ago Cass was immune to the Reality Engine wiping away the memory of the Bat.
Tumblr media
Here we find out another reason why: she's fighting as Bruce.
Of course, being that this is an Orgham-controlled Gotham and Shiva has her own subplot in the issue. Their exchange is cut short by the arrival of Azmer demons.
Something I've been hoping for Cass to encounter since they showed up.
I do muse how bluntly Shiva starts this team-up to again say she's not up to any insidious shenanigans. Again, it's Shiva being blunt which I guess she has to do given Cass just always seems to untrust her.
And we get the "juiciest" portion next. Still fighting as Bruce, Cass is getting her butt handed to her by the Azmer when we get this memory:
Tumblr media
Seven years it has been since we last saw you in a canon DC comic (fifteen years if we count this incarnation): welcome back David Cain you freaking bastard.
Again this goes back to what Cass said in her last story. She was built like Bruce, but differently, and here is how that came to be.
Which again is the core of Cassandra's character. She's always terrified of becoming what her father made her: this weapon of death. How she continues to go with this answer of NO and down this path of the bat.
Tumblr media
That goes deeply into WHY the bat symbol means so much for Cass. It's not just a layer of justice, but redemption. That is her coda: "You can change. You CAN change."
Ironically, it's due to the Reality Engine that probably WHY Cass has this relapse. She's good, but we know from the "Outlaws" arc even she was being affected by the Reality Engine at an EXTREMELY close range.
And it's fun that Shiva is again the one to help Cass through this time. Because other than Bruce and Oynx (man I miss that friendship), she's probably the only one who can help her daughter.
Where once more, we get the recurring theme of Cass/Shiva finding mutual ground between one another, but also Shiva letting her daughter be what she wants to be. Which given all their history does feel like a new layer going with them (hopefully).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, this story ties so wonderfully with what Ram V has been doing with Cass. Showing again, how much the bat symbol means to her, and again reminding the reader that she's built like Bruce in sheer determination.
This was a REALLY good story that was built on prior with Cassandra. It gives Cass a sense of poetry at the end for her character. Her appearances here all tie together for this subplot of showing the any new reader WHO SHE IS, and why so damn enthralling as a character.
In a way, this really felt like a good unofficial celebration of the character. Though DC never fully said it, this does celebrate just means A LOT to so many.
The tale meant A LOT, giving us ANOTHER banger Cass story to boot.
Though I can't help but wonder? Even if there were rats in the story. My mind kept going here instead and Cass's "little friend" and nickname from Shadow of the Batgirl. I know it was probably unintentional.
Tumblr media
If this is truly all we get in celebrating the anniversary of the character this TRULY was a story worthy for it. For that, I thank the creative team behind this and Ram V too for giving us this. Like you, Kelly, Michael, and Alyssa are just giving us all these bangers.🙏

BATONIUM AGES
okay so i started thinking about the specific ages of the utoniums and the batfam more and i think i’ve settled on something.
googling the professor’s age states that he’s either in his mid 40s to early 60s which gives me nothing at all. so i’m going to assume that when the ppg were made, he was like 46 years old.
the ppg just incarnated into the world as full on children and they have been depicted as being around 5 years old. so we’re going with that. considering the timeskip of a few years i’ve kind of established in the batonium au, the girls would be now 8 or 9 years old physically which would make the professor about 49-50 in the current timeline.
now, the hard part. the batfam’s ages. honestly, everytime i search bruce wayne’s age it’s the most fuck all thing ever. it’s the same with dick. and basically every other batfam member. goddamnit dc pls make my life easier 😭
so since the batfam’s ages are up to fuck all, i’ve taken someone’s headcanon ages from quora as a basis for my own age chart thing.
bruce wayne: 45
dick grayson: 27
jason todd: 22
tim drake: 20
damian wayne: 14
cassandra cain: 22
stephanie brown: 20
professor utonium: 49-50
ppg: 8-9 physically, they are technically 3-4 years old
the events of powerpuff girls (og show) happen about 3-4 yrs before this au so there we go. i hope this makes it easier for me to visualize the au in upcoming installments 🥲, also make it easier for you guys too. and this also means that damien isn’t the baby anymore 🫶🏼

Terry's place in the "modern" Batfam, or rather, his incompatibility, an essay
TL;DR: some JLU episode "Epilogue" discourse is missing some at the time context.
Also, if anyone tries to redo the same story: "Amanda Waller, why do you think the ideal of Batman is going to die? Have you seen his imitators? Have you seen his actual proteges? The dining room full of his kids???"
It was technically one of Terry's Birthdays this year. (either June 27th or August 18th of 2023/2024, yes i love you DC and you're inability to commit) and I've been thinking. His canonical DCAU origin.
Amanda Waller and her Cadmus Project "Batman Beyond" and her big fandom-enraging decision of making a "Son of Batman" to carry out the Batman name.
Maybe it was because "the only assistant that can deal with his job and his intense boss" relationship was actually kind of nice and different from the sidekick thing. and the JLU episode "Epilogue" took that concept and tainted it by saying "he had to be Batman, it's in his blood".
But the text of the episode genuinely refutes that and it just makes it...tonally messy and bittersweet? idk i ain't mad which is why I've picked at this tangled ball of yarn to get at this story.
Maybe it's not the making an heir to the Bat was enraging, as you realize, Cassandra Cain was introduced in 1999, the literal incarnation of Scary Fighter with Soft Side. Damian Wayne was retooled in 2006 and we all love a little Murder Child getting Growth, and Duke Thomas from 2013 is shaping up to be a great all rounder for the title of both Scary and Great Detective.
Even skipping Dick being Batman for a year and it sticking, the other Robins could wear the cowl as well. Maybe it was something else?
Currently, in the Modern!or Comics!DC, Terry is redundant because of all of the Batfam that have been introduced before and after him. And because of Fandom Telephone Fanon, it's hard to interpret older canon as fairly.
With how the Batman Beyond story is structured, Bruce has to be isolated, old and alone in order to trust Terry with the cowl. It's an escapist fantasy and it's a redemption for both of them. It's implied that the Justice League is not as strong as it used to be. The Age of Heroes is over. there was a "near apocalypse of '09"
Especially looking at Wayne Family Adventures, it's hard to imagine all of the Batfam just goes their own ways and doesn't check in.
Terry's origin and start as Batman is fundamentally incompatible with modern canon. It does not work with the concept of the "Batfamily" and even the "extended Batfamily".
Because of that we have to step back in time to 1999 where Terry was created and we also have to completely disregard the comics. Because he was created specifically for the streamlined DCAU.
At this point in the DCAU, the New Adventures of Batman wrapped up. There's Nightwing, Barbara Gordon (only Batgirl, not Oracle, even though the incident that put her in a wheelchair was written in 1988, the DCAU didn't adapt it), Tim Drake (who was combined with Jason Todd, taking over his outfit and backstory). that have been in the BatFamily. Three people who could try to take the cowl.
And then we get into the incident from the Return of the Joker, which was alluded to in series but never actually described. Where the Batfam Blows Up. and Bruce just carries on and isolates himself from Everyone.
Yeah, making a new incarnation of Batman sounds like a pretty good option at this point.
What I'm trying to say. the "Batman Beyond" project, at the time both in universe and out of it, made sense. but like all "future worlds", time catches up and eventually surpasses it.

Batman Ally Movie Ideas, Part II: Batgirl
Batgirl is the second most recurring mantle as one of Batman's sidekicks. Originated in its most well-known form by Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon's daughter who took up the cowl, in most incarnations, to seek justice for her father. After being shot by the Joker and being left disabled, she takes up the name Oracle in more of a tech support role, and the mantle goes to Cassandra Cain, the daughter of two assassins who was raised to be non-verbal, and at times, was taken up by Stephanie Brown, Tim Drake's girlfriend who has taken up the mantle of both Robin and Spoiler in the past, having taken up the Spoiler mantle to stop her father from returning to a life of crime. I won't be covering Betty Kane, as that "Batgirl" has much more to do with Batwoman than the Batgirl we're more familiar with, and we'll be covering her later.
Origin Movie: I think the best way to start an origin with Batgirl is to start it more or less in medias res for Batman and Robin, already out doing their thing, and having Barbara come back to town, studying and learning about the vigilantes and the dangers of Gotham, getting herself into the action after her dad is injured or some other impetus gives her a strong enough reason.
Sequel Movie: If an origin movie starts you out with Batman and Robin already working together, Barbara coming along and joining up is a natural follower. By the same token, Cassie or Stephanie could be introduced in that origin movie I just mentioned.
Finale Movie: Same problem with Dick if you're trying to bring in all the various members of the Batfamily. She and Dick are both the originators of the mantles, with a natural flow to the order of their successors, so introducing Barbara in the finale basically gives Cass and Steph the middle finger. However, if that's not what you're trying to do with the series, Gordon being hurt is a natural way to make the stakes high for Batman and Robin, especially if he's been an important part so far, and that, of course, would be plenty of reason for Barbara to take up the mantle too.
Standalone Movie: The biggest issue, I suppose, here is that Batman's existence is kind of required to explain her costume and hero name, as she is intentionally paying homage to him, so if you wanted it truly standalone, it would probably have to be her investigating Batman's disappearance and taking up the mantle (so, the same plot as the Batwoman series?). One idea is to have it be a Cassandra Cain standalone, with Barbara acting as Oracle and taking her on, with Batman being missing or dead.
Overall, my rankings of them are:
Origin Movie: I'm kind of interested to see a movie like that, with Barbara as the protagonist and Batman and Robin already existing in the world.
Sequel Movie: A natural followup to an origin with Robin and the best way to get the ball rolling on introducing everyone.
Standalone Movie: That Cassandra concept is interesting, but otherwise, it's something we've seen before.
Finale Movie: I'd rather put in the work to bring in everybody, to be honest.
What do you think? Who should I cover next?

And the title of Chaos goes too…
Bruce: Alfred, do you know who this is from?
Alfred: Perhaps you ought to read the note accompanying the gift then?
Bruce: It just says ‘chaos incarnate.’
Alfred: Well it’s certainly lovely of your children to gift you an early Christmas present.
Bruce: Yeah, but which one?
————
The kids all sitting around one of Barbara’s monitors:
Tim: I can’t believe he doesn’t know his own children.
Steph: I know, right? Like obviously he should have guessed me.
Tim: Hey, I’m a respectable guess too, you know.
Cass: I guess this is what I get for never getting caught.
Jason: Are we just ignoring the fact that he didn’t automatically assume it was me?
Duke: To be fair they’ve been giving you a run for your money.
The rest of the kids: *look at Duke*
Duke: Okay, WE’VE been giving you a run for your money.
Steph: Ya gotta own it, Duke.
Damian: Should I be proud or offended I wasn’t guessed?
Rest of the kids: Offended.
Barbara: Dick? Any comments?
Dick:
Dick: See, I told you he was losing his memory.
Dick: He didn’t guess me and I had a decade of chaos on the rest of you.
Barbara: Babe, I think he forgot about the chaos your thirteen year old self caused as a coping mechanism.
Jason: Wow, I’ve really got to up the ante here. He never forgets when I do something.
The rest of the kids: *nod along*
————
Bruce, staring at the gift:
Bruce: *picks up phone*
*calling*
Bruce: Yes, Roy? Can I speak to Lian please?
Bruce: Lian, sweetie, I just wanted to say thank you for the Christmas present.
Bruce: What? No, I haven’t opened it yet. I wanted to wait until I was on the phone with you.
Bruce: Yes, I can switch to a video call.
*video on*
Bruce: *opens present*
Bruce: I love it! Now could you tell me who helped you wrap it?
Bruce: Really? Thanks, sweetheart.
Bruce: Yes, I miss you too. Say hi to your grandpa Ollie for me, okay? And be sure to wear that Batman sweatshirt I got you. I’m sure he’d love to see that.
————
The kids still watching at Barbara’s:
Steph: How the heck nuggets did he do that?
Jason, shaking his head: Outclassed by my own kid.
Damian: Harper is going down.
Duke: Dude, you didn’t even care like five minutes ago.
Damian: That was before I realized it was HER.
Tim: She’s six, Dames. She’s not your arch nemesis.
Damian: Yet.
Dick: Okay, but Bruce knows I was involved now, right? So does that mean I still win?
Cass: Sorry, I think the title goes to Lian now.
Dick: Oh come on, she’s too young to be Chaos Incarnate.
Jason: Obviously you have not babysat her enough.
Dick: Well I WOULD if the two of you would LET me.
Jason: Hey, don’t complain to me, take it up with the ‘grandpas.’
The rest of the kids, thinking about the ongoing grandpa competition between Bruce and Ollie: *collectively shudder*
Steph: Hey Babs, what are you doing over there?
Barbara: *turns laptop around to show a trophy design*
Barbara: Do you think Lian would like a trophy that ejects glitter on a motion sensor or one that transforms into a sword better?
Damian: Tt. The sword one is obviously better.
Damian: Get her the glitter one.
Jason: As long as it’s not at my house.
Cass: Maybe she can keep it at her grandpa’s house?
Tim: On a rotating schedule so they both get the experience.
Dick: I still think I should have won.

✸ TAG SYSTEM
This system is based on the messaging of the Star Stream from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. As such it is divided in two: incarnation tags for specific characters, and scenario tags for specific stories or concepts.* Furthermore, the scenario tags are divided into Main and Hidden**, depending on whether it is a proper story/universe or just a concept that pops up now and then. I only tag original posts like this. Reblogs very rarely get one of these tags. Not all of the content is explicit, but quite a lot is, so thread carefully.
* You can check if I've talked about a character using the incarnation tag format and substituting the name, but every scenario has different, made-up names.
** I tend to only include writing excerpts or longer pieces of meta in the main scenario tags. Each main scenario story has its own solo tag, which is just the title of the story, and it includes both jokey posts, AUs and inspo reblogs. The hidden scenario tags make no such distinction.

Besides some AU’s in the comics Stephanie Brown bi is more hinted that actually canon.
She sadly was set as an eternal love interest for Tim.
I saw some stuff happening with Cassandra Cain but not sure what happened after that.
Harper Row the last time I read about her is that she was kinda a love interest for Tim? At least in her introduction.
Is funny because Tim now got a bf in the comics and the ladies started dating each other.
Oh, wow, thanks, I didn't know about their comic history at all, interesting! A bit of a TV Korrasaming of the comic characters, huh. :P
But hmm, Stephanie's line in this recent ep about not feeling sparks with either Brody or Turner, like, in real life that wouldn't have to mean anything at all but on a scripted medium where nothing's by accident or coincidental, I wonder if they're implying something else. Lesbian, ace, possibly still bi, just not into those guys.
Unfortunately, not sure we'll get the time to explore that in this series, and I also don't think this show is going to affect comics canon the way other adaptations have, so whatever we get in these next three eps will probably be it for this incarnation of the characters.

I hate that Lor Zod and General Zod are black in Young Justice. Even though there are a decent amount of black heroes in Young Justice, the amount major notable villains that are POC compared to white villains is outstanding. You have Lady Shiva, who is of Asian descent, the Al Ghuls, who is also Asian and Arabian, there's Black Manta, who is African American, and Vandal Savage, while ethnicity is largely unknown and is said to have been a caveman, ALSO seems to be a POC along with his two daughters, Olympia, who is killed by her own father is black, and Cassandra (there are a LOT of Cassandras in this show) who is brown colored it seems.
And while we do have Rocket, Bumblebee, The Guardian, Static Shock, and Black Lightning as major African American heroes that are focused on, it's just not enough compared to the white heroes that are focused on.
And I guess Artemis is technically half-Vietnamese and yet we see her mostly in a white household, while every time she is with her Vietnamese mother, there's always a sense of shame focused on the first Tigress. I mean in order to feel like I am dealing with a Vietnamese character, I wish they'd do more than just give us her eyes which are almond. Provide some Vietnamese culture instead of giving us a family that is so wracked in shame over its own heritage all because they couldn't live up to the status quo and make ends meet honorably like the white heroes were able to.
I do like Zatana's history...I think she's Italian, not that I would call being Italian being POC. But there was a story about immigrants intertwined there that was nice... Her arc was refreshing in how her students were ethnically diverse and fit into their different conflicts. And yet those diverse characters were just back up to the main star of the arc, Zatana...but I can't complain too much. Only if next season we don't get much of Khalid just like how Virgil was sidestepped as well and Halo too.
Going back to the Zods...I wouldn't have a problem with the Zods being POCs if we saw the House of El being similarly represented, that way it's equal...otherwise, it just seems racist, like they're portraying POCs as the bad guys and I already get that impression with how they continuously demonize Asian representation
They turned Lady Shiva into a far worse parent than she was in cannon when her only sin in the comics was abandoning her daughter and even then it was a sympathetic reason since she was literally coerced into bringing Cassandra into this world so David Cain could use his daughter as a weapon.
Instead of going with that storyline of a white man abusing his Asian daughter which they admittedly already got going on, they have the Asian woman who was raped become the abuser of her own child and become even worse than her husband in the comics by having Cassandra's vocal cords cut out!
And as someone said, she makes Sportsmaster who was an abusive parent to both his daughters look good.
Which is like why? If that was her previous incarnation then okay, that's on the comics and Young Justice was just unintentionally adopting racist elements from the comics because it was already there in the comics and Young Justice is just bringing that on the screen. It doesn't look well on them but it doesn't make them look too bad
But instead, they make the Asian woman, who yes while a villain is a complicated villain, into a far worse than she really is. Shiva was fucking raped for god's sake!
Tumblr media
This was literally on Cassandra Cain's wiki. In exchange for her life, she had to agree to give birth to his child and let him raise it. The bastard also killed her sister!
But instead of giving this sad history of Cassandra's that makes you kind of sympathetic to Shiva, Young Justice decides to just make Shiva into Cain, into wanting to turn her own daughter into a weapon.
What infuriates me about this is how Young Justice seems to spin a twisted narrative that spits on Asian ideals such as being filial and loyal towards family, and a part of me wonders if it's to promote the idea of independence that is promoted in Western culture. The idea of children rebelling and becoming their own person, leaving their parents to be their own man. I don't have a problem with that idea. As an American, I kinda prescribe to it.
But as someone who also is of South Asian descent, I dislike when they have a villain like Lore Zod sneer at Orion, who is the son of Darkseid and chooses to be on the side of New Genesis Gods, asking "Where is his loyalty?" in that why does he stand against his own parent?
What exactly are they trying to say?
Maybe I'm making too much out of this...
I guess I just have a lot of feelings about Young Justice. I enjoy the show and it has great storytelling...but there's a part of me that finds it so...off-putting.
