Doing a JLPT N1 workbook -- not because I have any plans of taking the exam, I just got worried about forgetting all the Japanese I know -- and of course they'd do this thing where the subchapter introducing particular phrases gives rather typical, predictable examples of their use, but the general comprehension check test has examples where the phrases are used in a way that's just. Weird. >:/

#oh how I missed this part about studying something :''''''')#like if the meaning of kosoare is 'although/despite' (as in 'a nurse's job; although difficult and tiring; is worth doing') then How does i #work in a sentence like 留学生の多くが、程度の違いこそあれ言葉の問題��悩まされているとみえる? the translated sentence is 'to varying degrees'#so there's nothing that even remotely resembles 'despite'!#there's another sentence like 外食したことにしてその分を貯めたとすればかなりの額になるだろう but I can't figure out what is the exact #meaning of that ことにして is ( ˘︹˘ ) FASCINATINGLY #both people and translating softwares online are torn as to what this sentence means. the workbook says 'If you save what you spend on #eating out; it'll come to a considerable amount'. However! I'm also seeing translations that take the ことにして as 'to act as though' and #make it 'If you pretended that you ate out out and saved the money' which is like. Pretended in front of WHOM? What psychological games are #you suggesting here? Is the sentence not about saving the money but rather making yourself believe you're eating fancier than in reality?#I'm sadly lost in the nuance sauce here I'm afraid.#the korean translation is plagued by similar problems. one web translator says one thing while another says another. now the MANDARIN #translation has 当作 which apparently is 'to regard as; to treat as' which is still like. what are we talking about here.#hypothetical hypotheticals? hm. a Japanese person on hinative said it means that you basically don't eat out BUT just think hypothetically #about what the expenses would be if you had WHICH IS JUST.
