marriage counselling would NOT fix them. largely because wily doesn't think he has issues keeping them at square 0 forever. but it would be Funny

also. tangential tangent:

I actually think about light's hands-off approach with wily's self improvement a lot. he seems to believe that reaching out over and over, that subtly exposing wily to the truth of their relationship (i.e. that light sees him as a dear friend [ahem] and equal) will simply. Fix whatever's troubling him. he places the responsibility of development squarely on wily's shoulders (good), but makes no real effort to understand him on a psychological/emotional level (bad). the closest he comes to doing so is in rm11, wherein he privately laments the impact his actions might've have had on wily's mental state/future behaviour, but, when confronting him, focuses on the possibility of rekindling their partnership instead.

when light says "we achieved this together" what he doesn't realise is that he's diminishing wily's personhood in a way. when light gives wily an opportunity to "join his side", he is, implicitly, apologising.

but he doesn't say sorry. he doesn't say that wily was right. this is perfectly normal, expected even, but important to me because imo wily only really registers this sort of thing when it's framed through the lens of explicit validation. if light can't bring himself to say it outright, wily is never going to listen. boulder meet hill.

Some of my favorite panels from the first chapter of Stepmother's Märchen (more below)

I love the way Orka drew the first chapter as a storybook, like the kind of picture book you'd read to a kid before bed.

The colors lend themselves to that style of storytelling, but still carry themselves over to the color palette of the web comic even though they're different art styles.

The way the roses & vines slowly morph into thorns as Shuri climbs the steps of her life with the Neuschwanstein children. How they end up engulfing her at the end when all she wanted was simple, happy life.

The last two panels are amazing, showing a "glow" as she's consumed by the thorns and looks like she's been stabbed through the heart. Compared to the bleakness of the panel that has the magic bean that she held in her heart along with her hopes of a simple future.

Also, I'm not the biggest fan of the Tapas translation of the title since "The Fantasie of a Stepmother" doesn't quite capture what a märchen is. It's not a normal fairytale. A märchen is a folktale with supernatural or magical elements like a character with special knowledge of certain events that works through obstacles to triumph in the end, sometimes with magical/supernatural help. I also love that the "epilogue"/first life chapters put a twist on the "wicked stepmother" trope.

hi I made this poem and image because my heart feels like it’s imploding. It feels like I’d rather take pain than nothing currently. The scraps of attention and touch will do.
